7:30ish this morning the trailer for The Moral Maze stated that 'gender' was a protected characteristic. I have complained. Michael Buerk.

They are going to be discussing someone's proposal to make social class protected 'like gender and <something else that got blotted out>'

I heard that and have complained. The style guide at the BBC should have this kind of thing in it. Maybe the journalists need some training on the issue 😀

Response:

Thanks for contacting us about a trail for the Moral Maze, broadcast on 27 July.
We’ve discussed your concerns about Michael Burke referring to gender as a protected characteristic with senior editors, who have responded as follows:
'Please accept our apologies for the error. We'll try to be more precise in our language and will be discussing your concerns with the presenter and the production team. Your feedback is valued.'
We always welcome comments from our audience, as it helps to keep our content as relevant and accurate as possible.

That's quite a good response, often the BBC are supercilious and dismissive of these complaints. Well done!

Well done TeenDivided I've complained in the past about the BBC misrepresenting the law like this and the BBC have hand waved away all concerns so this is real progress.

It's exhausting having to repeatedly pick up all these Stonewall captured organisations.

SallyLockheart · 05/08/2022 18:10

That’s a better than normal response but it’s about time they had thorough training at the BBC that gender is NOT a protected characteristic as it is a mistake, deliberate or otherwise, that they make a lot in lots of different programmes.

lanadelgrey · 05/08/2022 19:02

Had the same back as well. Will there be more training to correct previous misconstruing of the law under the influence of Stonewall?

Thanks OP, that's a decent response. Perhaps BBC has lawyers that look at ET findings? Or listen to Tory leadership candidates? Or have seen latest YouGov poll?

Who knows, but the BBC clearly has its nose to the wind Smile
