Misogyny against Liz Truss

PersonaNonGarter · 24/07/2022 13:31

Is anyone else seeing endless misogyny against Liz Truss painting her as ‘thick’ or ‘stupid’? While there’s an acceptance that Rishi is a clever nerd?

I am finding it quite disconcerting. Both she and Rishi Sunak have PPE degrees from Oxford. Yet so many memes about her being dumb. I haven’t seen any attacking Rishi’s intelligence.

Obviously, many many people disagree with them both politically. But that’s not what I am talking about. This is about a specific sort of criticism that really seems directed at her as a woman.

The misogyny against both Truss and Sunak is terrible.

Yours D Raab.

Also seeing people referring to her as Truss, surname only, but referring to Rishi Sunak as Rishi. Seems unfair

I for one think it is great that so many people in the media are able to identify that Lizzy is a women. It gives me great hope that more people that I knew, know what a woman is.

I don't remember anyone in here having a problem with misogyny when The Times printed this.

Have you met or worked with Liz truss?

don’t assume it is misogyny

Are you saying she is not a woman?

NotTerfNorCis · 24/07/2022 14:07

I've noticed it against female politicians in general. They seem to be judged much more harshly than men for their mis-steps.

You never actually add anything to any thread you're on, you know that don't you?

Sneering little quips are all you have, what's the point?

To OP,

I've been noticing the same thing.
She's being held to a different standard than RS. There's a definite undertone of misogyny around it.
She may be unfit for the job, so criticise the policies, not that she wore a bow.

Why did she wear a bow?
Do you not think that is worthy of comment?

Wheresmywoolyjumpers · 24/07/2022 14:41

I am torn - yes, I think female politicians are subject to a lot of misogyny. I felt the same about some of what was said about Priti Patel. On the other hand, I cannot stand their politics, and do feel that whatever degrees they obtained did not translate well into a balanced and sensible view of the world. And some of the stuff Truss says is just dumb.

Floisme · 24/07/2022 14:45

If you describe yourself as 'torn' about a female politician being subject to misogyny because you don't like their politics, then isn't that part of the problem?

I do loathe the way the press focus relentlessly on what women politicians wear. They never mention even in passing what a bloke has on, because it's not relevant. But someone with a vagina? It's crucial info apparently.

And yes, interesting how everyone's assuming Liz's sex. It's like we all just know really.

You are correct of course. No one has ever commented on Boris' hair or his strange habit of dressing up and pretending to play soldiers/pilots/builders.

Not really the same thing that, is it?

Oestrogelsmuggler · 24/07/2022 14:59

I saw the piece in The Times on this and disagreed. Women are criticised and so are men.

Kemi B wasn't, because she's actually a serious person with interesting ideas.

Truss is shallow, self-interested and after the populist vote.

Oestrogelsmuggler · 24/07/2022 15:03

@DoElephantsHaveWrinkles , Rishi Sunak has to deal with the prejudice that comes with having brown skin.

1dayatatime · 24/07/2022 15:10

There are very many good reasons why Liz Truss is really not up to the job of PM.

Her gender, skin colour, sexuality etc are irrelevant to this.

I'm sure that if Rishi Sunak doesn't get the job then many will say it is because he is Asian and as a result of closet racists in the Conservative party. But equally if Liz Truss doesn't get the job then many will say it is because she is a woman and as a result of closet misogynists in the Conservative Party.

I just wish voters would judge politicians on what they say or do rather than their gender, ethnicity, sexuality, social background etc.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 24/07/2022 15:11

Then you don't remember my outrage and others agreeing.

Very silly article.

Sunak (a man) isn't "bonkers". Corbyn (a man) was almost the dictionary definition of "bonkers".

The BTL comments give other examples.

Artichokeleaves · 24/07/2022 14:55

You are of course quite correct. Quite different Boris dressing up in the style of a soldier to Liz dressing up in the style of previous Prime Minister.

1dayatatime · 24/07/2022 15:13

@Oestrogelsmuggler

"Kemi B wasn't, because she's actually a serious person with interesting ideas."

I agree but sadly voters and the Conservative Party are more interested in the vacuous sound bites of Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak than a serious person with actual ideas.

Oestrogelsmuggler · 24/07/2022 15:16

@1dayatatime I agree, politics has become unforgivable puerile and we get the leaders we deserve. But I would say Sunak is as bad as Truss.

That said, I'm not a Conservative voter and find the whole lot of them baffling.

Oestrogelsmuggler · 24/07/2022 15:18

Ignore that nonsensical last post. I was trying to say unforgivably puerile, and I wouldn't say Sunak is as bad as Truss.
