Such disgraceful behaviour from the University of Pennsylvania. This can't just be about winning at this stage.

It is just bonkers. Obviously there is someone at Penn who is really, really invested in this project, other than the wretched Lia.

christmas2022 · 03/08/2022 06:56

A person that was not born a woman and therefore is not a woman has won an award for being woman of the year.

The world is absolutely bonkers.

And us women will still be told oh it's ok, parkrun isn't a race .... blah blah blah

achillestoes · 03/08/2022 07:02

They’re not helping Lia. This just makes more people resent Lia.

Beefcurtains79 · 03/08/2022 07:04

Lia didn’t win, she was just the candidate Penn put up for the award. You are right about someone at Penn being extremely invested in getting Lia ahead though.

Helleofabore · 03/08/2022 07:22

I thought the winners were being announced in Jan 2023??

And there was a short list due with the finalists but not chosen / released yet?

But of course, Lia Thomas should not have been included in the first place.

Beefcurtains79 · 03/08/2022 07:39

Hmm, I thought I read that another girl had won a few days ago, seems Liabis out of the running now though? Thank god.

It is shockingly disrespectful to women to have someone who grew up in a male body with all the associated privilege put forward as women of the year. Anyone who does so is showing their lack of understanding of male privilege.

Helleofabore · 03/08/2022 08:07

I am confused, but maybe there was a round of elimination that Thomas has not progressed forward from.

Either way, the timing going forward seems to be Top 30 announced in October. Then 9 finalists chosen some time and winner announced in January 2023.

from the site.

www.ncaa.org/news/2022/7/25/media-center-conference-offices-select-their-nominees-for-2022-ncaa-woman-of-the-year.aspx

The Woman of the Year Selection Committee, made up of representatives from the NCAA membership, will choose 10 nominees from each division to make up the national Top 30 honorees. The Top 30 honorees will be announced in October. From there, the selection committee will narrow the pool to three finalists from each division. The NCAA Committee on Women's Athletics will select the 2022 Woman of the Year from the nine finalists.

At January's NCAA Convention in San Antonio, the national Top 30 honorees will be celebrated, and the NCAA Woman of the Year will be announced.

But the final paragraph is interesting:

The NCAA Woman of the Year program is rooted in Title IX and has recognized graduating female college athletes for excellence in academics, athletics, community service and leadership since its inception in 1991.

(My bold and underline)

So, why was a male included?

howdoesatoastermaketoast · 04/08/2022 00:06

@Helleofabore "there was a round of elimination that Thomas has not progressed forward from." exactly, she was nominated by U
Penn (which is part of the Ivy league) but then the Ivy League edited down their list and she didn't make the cut (if you'll pardon the expression) to the next round.

Helleofabore · 04/08/2022 00:08

Thanks toast!

There was a Parks and Rec (sitcom) episode about this behaviour by ‘award givers’, where Ron Swanson gets nominated for woman of the year even though he doesn’t want to be. Hilarious tv. The award givers explained they knew Ron didn’t deserve the award and that his female assistant did all the work, but also knew the awards would never become high profile unless given to a man…
