The problem here (at least in the way outlets like Sky are reporting / spinning it) is that the push back on her stance is (inferred to be) because she supports ‘trans rights’

And whilst that alone may be upsetting to the more traditional core of the Tory party, the more important issue it highlights is her Boris-like struggle to tell the truth about her previous stance and actions.

This country doesn’t need another Boris. It doesn’t need Self ID either, but we don’t need to lurch from one gaslighting weathervane of a PM to another. Whoever wins this contest is very unlikely to call an election, so the whole country is going to have to endure a few years of whoever the Tory rump vote in.

I sincerely hope that won’t be Ms Mordaunt.

That.

Fgs can we please have a grown up with a grip on reality in power.

Yes, I don't think this is about her trans positon really. I actually don't think that will be the huge issue MN thinks it will at any GE, in (my) RL it's barely discussed and there are far bugger issues facing the country.

However, scrambling to try and explain how you never really did/said/thought something because it proved unpopular will be her downfall. Or at least it should be.

teawamutu · 14/07/2022 09:11

I've seen stuff about Mordaunt lying since before she launched her campaign. It doesn't seem to have achieved any cut through yet so I'm not optimistic.

Plasmodesmata · 14/07/2022 09:16

Not just this she's lied about.
www.theguardian.com/politics/2022/jul/12/penny-mordaunts-credibility-was-destroyed-by-her-claims-about-turkey
As pp said, not so much the issue really as the lying.

Takingthepmaybe · 14/07/2022 09:17

They never say it’s about womens rights do they. Gives me the rage.

achillestoes · 14/07/2022 09:17

How many go out today?

sky news are onto this, on the politics page:

Stinging attack on Mordaunt from her former boss Lord Frost
Former Brexit negotiator and cabinet minister Lord Frost has made quite an intervention in the Tory leadership race - saying he has "grave reservations" about Penny Mordaunt becoming the next PM.

Speaking to Talk TV, this is his view of the current favourite...
"I am surprised at where she is in this leadership race. She was my deputy, notionally more than in reality, in the Brexit talks last year.
"I'm sorry to say this... I felt she didn't master the detail that was necessary in the negotiations."
Lord Frost said she was not able to deliver "tough messages that were necessary" to the EU.
"She wasn't fully accountable or visible. Sometimes I didn't even know where she was. I'm afraid this became such a problem that after six months I had to ask the PM to move her on."
He hinted that she could be "pushed back" over Brexit if she was in Number 10 and that she was not "tough" enough.
In a stinging attack, he went on: "Anyone can be photographed in a video with 'I vow to thee my country', but it's what you do in practice."

achillestoes · 14/07/2022 09:25

He definitely burnt her campaign. They’re accusing him of undermining party unity (where?!).

zanahoria · 14/07/2022 09:31

She has completely turned turtle.

It is great that she annoyed the TWAW crowd but she obviously does not give two hoots either way.

Her twin brother is Gay and made TWAW noises so she has chucked him under the bus too.

Wow. Don't sit on the fence!

None of that is surprising though.

I agree. Not too much to ask, is it? 😡

Yep
You can always tell when people use the term ‘trans issues’ they don’t care about women’s rights

PaterPower · 14/07/2022 09:56

BBC just talking about Penny Mordaunt’s being “criticised on twitter” (interview with a correspondent at about 09:40 on the news).

I’ve never heard someone so obviously (and badly) trying to skirt around describing the actual underlying issue. He came off with “it’s about trans rights” and “the use of pregnant people” in the legislation she was nominally responsible for seeing through Parliament.

Dare I say it, but Mordaunt is going to be a more attractive proposition to many at the BBC than most of the other candidates and I think we’ll see her being given a lot of slack by them.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 14/07/2022 09:57

That dressing down from Frost can't play well for her. Especially with Brexiters.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 14/07/2022 10:00

It's really hypocritical of them considering they have also used this issue in the past to make laughing stocks of female Labour and Lib Dem politicians like Lisa Nandy and Jo Swinson. Not that I feel much any sympathy, obviously, it's just quite striking.

Ohnohedident · 14/07/2022 10:03

Seems like the press have announced her as the front runner, I wonder if they have consulted the public, Tory party members or even Tory MPs? or are they just doing the usual and announcing the most photo genic as the glorious leader and exspecting the country to fall in line.

They can fuck off with their medling, she is already a proven lier and it only the first days of her campaign. God knows what she would be like as PM.

We did the lovable scoundrell thing with Boris and the country has moved on.
(Anyway everyone knows 'lovable scroundrells' are men, women just get called out as liers and cheets)

God I hope Kemi wins, I fucking love her.

Her former boss doesn't think much of her.

jomartin281271 · 14/07/2022 21:05

Madelein Albright once said 'There's a special place in hell for women who don't help other women', and Mordaunt is throwing women under the bus to advance trans rights.
I'm all for the trans community being accepted in society, but I don't think women should have to share intimate spaces with anyone who has male genitalia. They can self identify all they want, but they're still men transitioning to women.

Motorina · 14/07/2022 21:19

As @Plasmodesmata and @50mg have said, the issue for me isn't so much her perspective on trans issues. I disagree with her, but I can live with that. It's her integrity. Boris will happily claim that up is down if he thinks it'll win him support. We don't need a repeat.

It's also her judgement. That campaign video, and the people it featured, demostrated monumentally poor judgement.

And the opinion of Frost really is the death knell for me. Incompetent, not in charge of her brief, and dishonest. Better the bushy haired shagger we know.

It's sort of academic, as I don't have a vote. But I really hope she doesn't win, for many more reasons than that she thinks TWAW.

Shehasadiamondinthesky · 14/07/2022 21:22

Radio 4 was fun this afternoon, MPs were falling over themselves to define what a woman is, one of them, Braverman, said trans women are not women on air.
Never thought I'd hear the like!!!

It's progress isn't it? This issue is not going to be shoved under the carpet. Especially not with the nation's children going home to lecture their parents that TWAW, men can get pregnant and they're now to be called Fred / Frederica (on a Wednesday).
