Subtle change in language

I find this subtle change in language used in the BBC reporting of Jamie Wallis's crash interesting.

"He identifies as he/him", rather than 'He uses he/him pronouns'.

The user of a pronoun is the person who is using them to refer to someone in speech. The only pronouns that JW uses to refer to himself are I/me.

Have the BBC finally recognised that the terminology 'uses' in this context emphasises the compelled quality of language around trans people?

Would be good if that were the case but I think it'll just be the way the author has decided to write it

I’m confused. He is transgender, so a transwoman, uses he him pronouns, wears male clothing as per the photo and has made no changes to his appearance. How exactly is he trans?

Because he says so

he has no interest in being a woman - he just wants to women's clothes for the thrill

I think the issue from the BBC's point of view is that this is the wrong type of trans person. Doesn't fit the stunning, brave narrative, and therefore the Beeb is happy to signal he is not really trans.

He bought has a diagnosis of gender dysphoria, therefore is trans. He could get a female birth certificate in a couple of years.

You can be 'trans' and be one of the following: "transgender, transsexual, gender-queer (GQ), gender-fluid, non-binary, gender-variant, crossdresser, genderless, agender, nongender, third gender, bi-gender, trans man, trans woman,trans masculine, trans feminine and neutrois." (Stonewall).

I consider myself agender or genderless (if pushed about my gender), so I guess could be described as a trans woman, but due to people's opposition to clearly defining the words they use, it's all massively confused.

Most people think 'trans' means 'transsexual' but even the difference between that and transgender in the modern sense is completely throwing everyone. (I.e. transgender people don't necessarily want to 'change sex', it's all to do with a gender identity that has nothing to do with the biological sex of one's body).

To be fair, he does appear to have grown his hair a bit.

Hopefully, the 'but I'm Trans, gov' won't turn out to be the get-out-of-jail-free card that he thought it was going to be....

@LaughingPriest , your post very succinctly explains why gender identity should be kept out of legal process.

My reading is that he likes to wear ‘ladies clothes’. He was/is married and has fathered children. He refers to himself as a man.

He is an old fashioned cross dresser. We’ve had these for ever. Maybe he thought this was a way to wiggle out of court?
