Women's Rights Network have put together an excellent "Respect My Sex" letter which you can send with one click to your Conservative MP, urging them to support a Tory leader (PM) candidate who will act to protect women's sex-based rights.

Please send and share widely: www.womensrights.network/conservatives-respect-my-sex

I sent my own note to my MP earlier today saying exactly that.

Got a reply back within the hour saying they couldn't agree with me more, the next PM must know what a woman is.

HelenaRavenclaw · 11/07/2022 18:14

That's excellent! The more of these they receive in their inboxes, the harder they'll find it to ignore the issue.

I have sent the letter but adapted it as it is currently drafted as if you might be a Conservative Party member and I am not. It also comments on the need for Boris to go quickly which I don't think is actually relevant and in fact I am actually a bit uncomfortable about parties (any party) knifing elected PMs with large majorities.
So if you are not 100% happy with the set wording as I wasn't, you can still do it by cutting and pasting.

ChristinaXYZ · 11/07/2022 19:52

Thank you for flagging it up - a good idea but a terrible letter. Why oh why that para about Boris going asap. It is beside the point and many of the people who WRN want to send the letter may not agree. Many of the conservative MPs who are recipients will certainly not agree, so why mention it when the important thing is who is the next Prime Minister.

They should have involved Conservatives For Women in the writing of it. They would have got a better letter.

Like a PP I have copied and pasted the letter into my own email system, re-written large bits of it and sent it myself.

ChristinaXYZ · 11/07/2022 20:03

I've just read that they need 20 supporters to even stand the first round of voting which means only Rishi and Mordaunt (God help us).

Kemi Badenoch and Liz Truss badly need the support of some of the undeclared MPs and some of the support from the MPs who clearly are going nowhere like Suella Braverman and Sajid Javid. I think many of their supporters would go to Liz and Kemi.

So if you have not emailed your MP and can do so, please do it tonight!

And If your MP is Sajid Javid, Suella Braverman or one of their supporters (see here docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1ffqemZ-YOi7AvAw8HbxmMd0vIbsOXLZ7KpAmNQPD2r8/htmlview?pru=AAABghIDLx0*BEenXQcPcOs6a31JIXq5bw#gid=0 ) please ask them to consider dropping out and giving Liz or Kemi their support!

Whilst Rishi would not be a disaster it would be better to have woman PM who really gets our predicament.

Given that Mordaunt and Tugendhat are the closest contenders to Sunak right now, I would honestly feel better seeing Sunak's supporter list grow so that it far outnumbers Mordaunt's and Tugendhat's by a very large margin, rather than Truss' or Badenoch's grow a little and Sunak's number staying close to Mordaunt's.

The recent YouGov poll shows Conservative party members favouring Mordaunt over Sunak (40%-38%) in a head-to-head contest, and I think we need Mordaunt and Tugendhat (who doesn't think the women's issue is important) out at all costs, even if it means having Sunak rather than Badenoch or Truss.

anyone but Mordaunt. Shit

BreadInCaptivity · 11/07/2022 22:27

Excellent- thank you.

Mine hasn't declared for anyone yet.

Will get a letter in.

HelenaRavenclaw · 11/07/2022 22:43

Yes please send this letter or a similar customised letter ASAP by today (Monday)! The MPs' deadline to declare their support is tomorrow (Tuesday) and voting begins Wednesday.

How the fuck is Mordaunt apparently out the front like this?

Even leaving aside her terrible zeal for throwing women's rights under the bus, what has she done exactly to warrant so much favour? I mean, I know it's not exactly a stellar field of competitors she's up against, but still. Really??

I work for an MP

copy & paste emails may get ignored. MUCH BETTER to write in your own words what your concerns are.

She's actually very good at the dispatch box and has had quite a few epic moments - one in particular with Rayner.

I still don't think she'll win though.

She's dropped the ball with her claims about keeping "mother" in the legislation and other candidates know damn well that's not true.

They'll go for the jugular on that one.

Right. So she'll appeal to MPs. But do those who do well at the dispatch box automatically go down well with voters? Starmer gives a good account of himself at PMQs, but has all the charisma of a wet dishrag when out and about with the public.

But anyway, yes, it seems that Mordaunt has been caught in a blatant lie and there's hay to be made with it. Fingers crossed that does for her. I reckon the Tories as a whole will be suspicious of her wokery in any case.

TotalRhubarb · 11/07/2022 22:56

My MP's already declared for Richie. I suppose it could be worse.

eleanorwish · 11/07/2022 22:59

My MP has already declared for Kemi. I'm not sure women's rights is top of his priorities but I have written to him in the past and he said he shares my concern.

ScrollingLeaves · 12/07/2022 01:42

How does it work if you don’t have a Conservative MP for your area?

Gingernaut · 12/07/2022 01:52

20 backers to get onto the ballot in the first place and 30 votes to get past the first round.

With Suella trying to out-Gammon the Gammons, Mordaunt who may or may not know what a woman is and Sunak, who,'s happy to sell his soul and our arses to foreign, private investors, it's not looking good.

Can you please clarify what you mean here? Sunak already has 40 votes, so has passed every threshhold. He doesn't need any more endorsements. He could be knocked into third place if two other candidates overtake him, but no one is close. Two choices will go out to the Conservative Party membership. If things continue as is, it will be Sunak and someone else. Why prioritise giving Sunak MORE votes - isn't the issue now who is the second person, not who is the first person?

ScrollingLeaves · 12/07/2022 02:20

Please would you tell me about that briefly. Gingernaut?

This is for the first round.

The slate is wipped clean and they go again for round 2 etc.

Some MPs swap backings between rounds through what is said etc and also the MPs who endorse the dropped out candidates are up for grabs.

Tories are renowned for not going for the obvious. Major beat Hessletine for example and Cameron was a backbencher when he won.

Who can we write to if our MP is not Conservative?

I'm very concerned that Mourdant is the favourite.

If it were me, because I'd want to vent to someone, I'd email the chair of the backbench 1922 committee pointing out Mordaunt's mendacity over what happened with the Maternity Bill already show that replacing Boris with her would be replacing like for like. And do they want that? Do they want 'what is woman?' coming up every time she is interviewed like it does with Starmer? If not they need to make sure that the process this week examines her record on this very closely what with it affecting 51% of the population and all.

I'd put 1922 committee as the title of the email and copy it to the whole committee

As of 11 July 2022, the executive committee comprised:

Chair
Sir Graham Brady

Joint Vice-Chairs

William Wragg
Nusrat Ghani

Joint Executive secretaries
Bob Blackman
Gary Sambrook

Treasurer
Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown

Perhaps also your local candidates and councillors? They'll be voting for the final two, and might be useful for them to consider who might, or might not, win your electoral votes.
