...but only when it comes to two gay men buying babies and the 'wrong' sex being delivered.

Just saw this on Twitter and I don't even know where to start with this story. 🤐

Pink News does know the difference between male and female after all...

I believe the process the egg donor goes through is quite gruelling and pregnancy isn't a walk in the park. At least those women, theoretically, are consenting adults. They're never poverty stricken, guilt tripped or otherwise coerced.Hmm

There are many ethical issues with IVF, I don't consider sex selection at embryo stage the biggest issue, there are a load of ethical issues before you even get to that stage.

Sure there are other ethical issues. Which are very interesting but in the context of this thread maybe we're getting into whataboutery.

But sex selection, for any purpose other than strictly medical, seems pretty clear cut. It's saying you value one sex more than the other, or at best that you're thinking of this potential child in terms of stereotypes not as an individual.

Covidagainandagain · 11/07/2022 16:48

Sex selection is legal in many places though often only for medical reasons. IVF brings up a lot of ethical issues, I'm not sure that this is any greater than the others.

I've had IVF so I appreciate I am biased but IMO the ethical issues here are cumulative

So you can have the IVF I did, my egg, my husbands sperm, fertilised and back into my body

Or you can for example, have a donor egg

Then you can implant it into another womans body (neither of whom are going to be involved in this childs life)

Then you can demand that it can't be a girl

There are so many layers of ethical issues there, that's the problem for me. Aside from the fairly obvious problems of 'you know who a woman is when you want one to carry a baby and put her life at risk for you' and 'you know who a girl is when you end up with one you didn't want'

The clinic also advertises sex screening for eggs so parents can choose the sex of their child.

Erm, that’s not how it works, Pink News. Guess again.

Jesus wept

How totally lacking in basic intelligence are Pink News? On a par with 2+2=5 (maybe that's the next article?)

blahblahblahspoons · 11/07/2022 17:09

you know who a girl is when you end up with one you didn't want

Yes, it exposes the lie that it's self-ID and acceptance without exception.

It's self-ID FOR MALES and ONLY MALES. That poor baby doesn't get to self-ID into being wanted and loved, as is a basic want and need for all children (and given this is so you could argue that that baby DOES ID as male since that's the only way to be considered worthy of love, clearly).

OhHolyJesus · 11/07/2022 17:14

I’ve been anti-surrogacy since finding out more about on the feminism board (before the split) but ethical issues around IVF range from Saviour Siblings (already mentioned) to Gene Editing (CRISPR).
There’s the risks of multiple pregnancies when several embryos are implanted and the ethical questions around ‘foetal reduction’ and the ‘no known risks’ of egg harvesting.

If women are reduced to the biological function of reproduction and babies can be bought and sold then ‘ethics’ are pretty much out of the window anyway.

CloudPop · 11/07/2022 17:19

Imagine if the boys are trans and they end up with 3 daughters.

Abhannmor · 11/07/2022 17:39

No self awareness. Selfish amoral men.

Conflictedunicorn · 11/07/2022 19:06

But bit isn’t sex assigned at birth? Have the TRA been lying to us all this time? Surely If sex is assigned at birth they wouldn’t know until the baby was born, then surely they could pay the sex fairy midwife to assign them a boy? Or is that not how this works?

Couldn't happen to nicer parents, I'm sure...!

Kendodd · 10/07/2022 20:29

Poor child.
What happened to her I wonder?

They seemed to have, grudgingly, taken her in. Now they’re going for the boy they really wanted.

10 years down the line, of sooner, what’s the betting she’ll be begging to transition?

Sazzasez · 11/07/2022 22:45

Horrifying story but entertainingly stupid article.

Apart from the idea of “testing the egg to determine what sex it is” (doh!) a rare moment of realism when they describe 2 gay men as a “same-sex couple” (yay!) but then contrast them with a “cisgender couple”.

Very confusing: perhaps they have to put the word “cisgender” in every article to get paid?

Aren't both of these gay men 'cisgender'? By 'cisgender couple', did they actually mean 'heterosexual couple'?

Oh well. Probably a bit much for PN to manage to understand what a girl actually is and also deal with basic reproductive biology and use their unnecessary neologism appropriately all at once.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 12/07/2022 13:36

Interesting when you Google the female couple mentioned in the article who are suing because they had a boy instead of a girl. One of them is chair of diversity at a university that threw out a student last year for saying sex is real. The hypocrisy and entitlement is off the scale. I hope those poor kids have other people close to them who can give them the love they deserve.

SammyScrounge · 31/07/2024 22:00

HipTightOnions · 10/07/2022 20:27

That poor little girl.

Yes. The gay couple should be banned from surrogacy. They are unfit to be parents. Real parents accept what they get, boy or girl, healthy or sick, plain or pretty and do their best for their child. This pair are looking for an accessory made to order. Real life doesn't happen like that, boys.

‘they wanted a male embryo implanted in their surrogate’

Baby. Trafficking. Abuse.

You don't know what trafficking means do you?

MrsOvertonsWindow · 01/08/2024 23:29

Christinapple · 01/08/2024 00:41

You don't know what trafficking means do you?

It's a global crime that trades in people of any age and exploits them for profit. Sums up the buying and selling of babies perfectly.
