An example of how the narrative is being controlled? Sorry for the pink news link but this has been reported widely

www.pinknews.co.uk/2022/07/08/friends-trans-marta-kauffman-chandler-parent-misgender/

So people have to atone for any wrong think even from 20 years ago now? Even before the trans issue was even on the mainstream radar?

Do we do this with other marginalised groups who have been represented poorly on TV shows or films in the psst? Black characters? Gay characters? Apologise two decades later for doing something which wasn't even a thing then ? ( in this case misgendering).

I thought Charles Bing was a drag Queen, not a transwoman.

orangeisthenewpuce · 10/07/2022 17:25

My eyes just roll at this type of pointless rubbish

bellinisurge · 10/07/2022 17:25

Me too @achillestoes

Preeeschooler · 10/07/2022 17:27

I heard this on the radio today and it really confused me because I’m sure Caitlin jenners kids still call them ‘dad’.

i think it’s quite common among actual trans people and seems a massive over reaction. Firing someone for taking the piss out of their trans colleague - absolutely right, but apologising for something that’s not a big deal even now and certainly wasn’t 20 years ago just feels bizzare.

There probably wasnt even the word then. Still, drag queen is still fair game for TRA propaganda machine, they will probably say the character SHOULD have been recognised as a transwoman even during that time so apologise more bigots!

Thinking about it. All the lesbians at Carol and Susan's wedding were cis! Not one single stunning and brave transwoman in attendance. Were Carol and Susan evil terfs? I think they must have been!

CrossPurposes · 10/07/2022 17:39

Marta Kauffman has also endowed a Professorship in African and African American Studies as a way of apologising for the lack of diversity in Friends.

It's bigoted qnd misgendering to assume all cross dressers are trans.

cross dressing people have already been assimilated under the trans umbrella

Isaidnoalready · 10/07/2022 18:04

Thought it was delt with ok I mean confused kid drag parent hostile exes seemed legit to me

NellesVilla · 10/07/2022 18:07

Not this old chestnut again. So utterly ridiculous- is there nothing else to froth up about??

beastlyslumber · 10/07/2022 18:08

Kathleen Turner as Chandler's dad was just genius. The whole storyline was funny and awful (for Chandler).

It sucks that people are apologising for anything in Friends. It was funny! I hate all this ridiculous woke purity bollocks. As if we've got everything right now and we just need to erase the past so as not to show ourselves up.

PriamFarrl · 10/07/2022 18:08

It does jar when you watch it now, but like so many old series you have to watch it with the understanding of the time.

BigDayToday · 10/07/2022 18:11

The character was made up, yes? So why doesn't the maker-upper get to 'assign' gender and pronouns to the character they made up?

Well, quite.

FWIW I thought he was an excellent gender non-conforming character. Strong, funny, unapologetic. The joke was always on Chandler for having an issue with it.

Whatsnewpussyhat · 10/07/2022 19:17

It was his DAD. There was never any question that he was a man who made a living from drag. Not a transwomen. Chandler never had to call him mum or pretend he was a woman.

I thought the TRA's saw their arse because the character was played by a woman?

ComDummings · 10/07/2022 19:22

Chandler’s dad was a great character, the storylines with him were done quite well and as others said I thought a drag Queen rather than trans anyway.

achillestoes · 10/07/2022 19:28

And obviously played by a woman. 😂

Oh I think you just misgendered thee! Repent!

I have seen the show multiple times through repeats and don’t remember the dad character receiving any transphobic abuse. Chandler was neurotic and uncomfortable around his dad, but that was his problem. I seem to remember the dad was always portrayed as being fabulous and having cutting comebacks to any remarks.

I mean, it’s a moot point because the character wasn’t trans, but a drag queen. I suspect it’s because the show has really picked up traction with the zoomer crowd (my teen nieces LOVE it) and they sell a shitload of merch and make money from conventions and events. They don’t really give a shiny shit about trans people or lack of diversity.

I think it’s good to be able to recognise things you did wrong in the past and take ownership for them. 20 years ago I called a girl in my Reception class (5 years old?) a pig, I bumped into her when we happened to go to the same uni and she reminded me of the incident - I apologised. I may not have regretted it at the time, but 20 years later it’s still ok to recognise it was wrong. I think Kaufman is doing the same thing - kudos to her.

1idea · 10/07/2022 19:52

Sadly I heard Sinatta’s song yesterday So Macho! The lyrics include not wanting a 7 stone weakling or a a boy who thinks he’s a girl. I don’t know if she has apologised yet for being so offensive in 1987.

ahagwearsapointybonnet · 10/07/2022 19:52

Must have a book coming out or something and be after some attention and virtue points? That's certainly how it comes across...

But they weren't wrong at the time. Misgendering wasn't a thing then.

The black diversity one I get more but the trans apology makes no sense, as others said the character was a male drag queen played by a female actress. Transgender wasnt even a common word in 2004 we probably still said transsexual / transvestite back then.

yet now this is seen as a terrible travesty to the trans community worthy of apology.

Ridiculous.

What about the apologies for films depicting women in a negative way? Fatal attraction is one that particularly springs to mind.

You can be gender critical and still agree the depiction of Chandler’s father was unkind. Even at the time I thought it was harsh. I also hated the sexism (Ross was the worst 😂). But I still love Friends.
