It’s pretty clear to me there are a few Tories who will not be trying to change the legislation to remove women’s rights. That’s all I care about right now. If I vote anyone other than labour (or if I don’t vote at all) I am making the decision to erase myself. No thanks.

Wimblepeep · 09/07/2022 21:56

Other than tory*

achillestoes · 09/07/2022 21:57

@Zone2NorthLondon

As a woman, I feel like the house is on fire. I’m voting for whoever is coming along with a bucketful of water, and I accept I won’t agree with them on other issues.

Beelezebub · 09/07/2022 22:06

If this is correct, then he’s one that I could tentatively get on board with for this issue. Although it doesn’t go far enough in my view. A lot of emphasis on competition in sports but not much on protected single sex spaces such as prisons and so on.

There’s no other party I can vote for (looking ahead to the next GE) as it stands right now. Not when all of the rest would throw womens rights in the bin. I’m

I’m genuinely astonished posters are so positive and thinking of voting tory
don’t trust the Tories, ideologically that are anti union, misrepresent the public sector, and have enforced austerity upon people. Plus, I don’t agree with brexit and oh I’m a republican with Irish family. So on balance…it’s a big no from me. I’m not fooled by platitudes about women rights, don’t trust them

I understand where you are coming from because whilst this issue isn't enough to make me vote Tory, it's enough to stop me from voting Labour/LibDem/Green (I've been spoiling my ballot for years now).

However this is still good news on two fronts imho.

It demonstrates political parties know this is a topic about which a significant number of voters feel strongly about. It means our voices are finally being heard. Labour/LibDem/Greens are going to have to do some serious maths about how many voters like me they are alienating, those they are pushing to the Tory's and the number of votes they'd lose if they changed their stated policies and where those voters would likely go.

The second good reason is that puts Mordant and Sunak (the two favourites) with a clear gap between them and one I imagine Sunak will exploit in his campaign to both Tory MP's and the party membership.

Whilst a Tory govt is not my first choice, a Tory Govt with TWAW Mordant in charge would be the worst of all outcomes.

The next leader of the Conservative party, and therefore the next UK PM, is going to be a "Tory". There's simply no way that can vary. So among the possible Tories, people on a feminist board prefer a Tory who claims - even if not credibly - to prioritise women's rights to a Tory that openly promises to decimate them. Not astonishing.

roarfeckingroarr · 09/07/2022 22:20

What about prisons, Rishi?

TullyApplebottom · 09/07/2022 22:21

CuriousCatfish · 09/07/2022 21:41

Then you are deluded if you think getting votes means anything at all apart from getting votes.

This is how democracy works. Politicians listen to the discussion of the issues and decide how best to address their constituents concerns.
its what’s supposed to happen - give me that any day over crusading arrogant Labour morons trying to persuade us that the earth is flat.

CucumberCool · 09/07/2022 22:21

@achillestoes
I think you'll find those buckets are full of lighter fluid

LunchPoems · 09/07/2022 22:22

I won’t be disenfranchised as I think that’s what they want. So I will vote, and I will vote on this issue.

janesmithsdog · 09/07/2022 22:22

This is how to win my vote 🙌🏼

Zone2NorthLondon · 09/07/2022 22:35

Well it’s an interesting insight into other people views and potential voting pattern
i think there is a lot of naïveté and misplaced optimism regard tories and Rishi

SheldontheWonderSchlong · 09/07/2022 22:46

I'm a lone parent, unpaid carer on benefits, never voted conservative in my life (why would I have?) but I am absolutely a one-issue voter on this issue now. However, my mp is the rather wonderful Rosie Duffield, but I will still have to properly consider if I even want to vote for a party that has become so ideologically anti-science as it will feel like I'm condoning the lunacy.

ARoombaOfOnesOwn · 09/07/2022 23:00

I think we have to see as a positive that candidates are coming straight out with women’s rights and with clear language. It changes the dial. Who knows, Labour might even be listening, we can but dream.

TullyApplebottom · 09/07/2022 23:04

It seems to be a basic hygiene issue now for the tories. It’s not the be all and end all but They have to put down a marker and show they’re not actually going to tell the nation, as the fragrant sir Keir did, that female biology is unspeakable.
I shouldn’t have to be grateful about this, but I am

TullyApplebottom · 09/07/2022 23:05

Oh, and Labour aren’t listening. They know best. Why won’t you sit still and be educated, bigot?

Yes there seems to be some misunderstanding about what's going on here. We have got 2 years to try and get a much more sensible approach embedded (or at least started) in education, health, justice, sport. After that we will quite possibly have a labour government. That may be better in many ways imo, I might even decide to vote for them despite this issue, but in the mean time it's a choice between conservatives. I hope they pick someone who will really make a difference on this issue for the next 2 yrs.

The fact that candidates for pm are raising this as an issue to distinguish themselves is entirely down to the efforts of all the women working on this for the last few years, and all the puuuullllling. I hope labour are watching. But I hope it doesn't push then the other way to distinguish themselves from conservatives.

The vast majority of tories are not true believers in twaw - I doubt any are. Once it became clear what it actually means and that many voters don't like it they could drop it.

StansRealityStruggle · 09/07/2022 23:09

I guess I am a fairly rare beast - a lone parent on benefits and a Tory party member. Women's rights will be absolutely pivotal in my voting decision. Watching events with great interest.

TullyApplebottom · 09/07/2022 23:11

I don’t see any grounds to believe that Labour is going to shift its position. A vote for them now or in two years, or in five years, is a vote for genderism. Deal with it.
keir actually believes this stuff. So do most of the rest of them. They aren’t pretending. It’s what they think.

Gagagardener · 09/07/2022 23:18

But you can't vote in the Tory leadership election unless you are a Conservative MP or a paid-up member of the Conservative party. If you want to support Sunak in his attempt to become the PM who replaces Johnson, you'll have to join your local branch NOW. And in a general election, you can only vote for Sunal if you live in his constituency, where a three-legged donkeycwith a blue rosette would get in. I know thus. I live there.

justbesensible · 09/07/2022 23:23

I hate the Tories - they’ve massively cocked up covid and Brexit. But THIS I can get behind. I’m relieved excited and hopeful all in one.

hangonsnoopy · 09/07/2022 23:24

I have never voted Tory and am very opposed to austerity measures.

But, I am a woman on a low income and a DA survivor. Tories brought in the Domestic Abuse recently. Their Universal Credit changes for low income workers (brought in by Sunak) made me £200 a month better off.

I'd like more investment in public services but I don't trust Labour with basic women's rights.

hangonsnoopy · 09/07/2022 23:24

Sorry, Domestic Abuse Act.

jayritchie · 09/07/2022 23:25

Seems to be timed as an attack on Penny Mordaunt. Possibly also to take a bit of publicity away from Kemi who is getting good coverage.
