Any CILIP members?

I'm at the CILIP conference and this is a tweet from the LGBTQ+ network. It came after I raised a perfectly legitimate query about support for GC librarians after the Julie Bindel cancellation and complaints about transphobic books. I'm meeting with Nick Poole tomorrow but would appreciate emails / tweets to him in support.

Bump. Hopefully someone will be along in a minute.

LGBT etc. networks often act like crybullies, don't they?

Fenlandia · 07/07/2022 22:32

Do these clowns need to be shown the Forstater judgement? There's some very self-righteous people in the library world who nevertheless think it's fine to bully people for wrongthink

Fenlandia · 07/07/2022 22:35

Good luck OP - hope you get somewhere with Nick Poole

PearlClutch · 07/07/2022 23:00

Thanks for raising this, OP. Appalling that CILIP would have their name put to discriminatory and hateful statements like these. Do they mention any other beliefs that they don't think 'have a place'? Any particular religions that they wish to exclude?

BunnyBerries · 07/07/2022 23:06

This is very concerning because CILIP should be about promoting the coordination of and sharing of information and resources without any political agenda.

Good catch on that screengrab OP, I expect it won't stand.

PaleBlueMoonlight · 07/07/2022 23:10

I am not a member, but also really concerned. Who is Nick Poole and is this just coming from the LGBT etc. Network? Is their statement a CILIP "approved" statement? Has CILIP more broadly been captured?

Fenlandia · 07/07/2022 23:18

The cutesy cartoon of the dinosaurs with guns, one in trans flag colours, is appalling.

Nick Poole is head of CILIP and it doesn't seem like this shit is coming from him, rather the lgbtq network.

Boadicea2 · 08/07/2022 01:18

Now retired but still a member. I've been watching this spread with dismay - especially ironic as the Health Library Group is putting huge emphasis on the importance of clear language for people who struggle with understanding health information.
the CILIP structure is quite complex - I think the group's have considerable autonomy - especially as I don't think you need to be a CILIP member to belong to the LGBTQ group.
Not sure I'm brave enough to tweet Nick Poole but that dinosaur one is nasty.

Boadicea2 · 08/07/2022 01:35

Looks like the dinosaur tweet is gone and plenty of dissenting tweets.

RhubarbCrumbled · 08/07/2022 05:43

Just woken up and seen the responses to the tweet! Thank goodness! I'm also glad I grabbed the screenshot though.
Although the groups gave some autonomy this network are claiming to speak on behalf of CILIP. It also speaks volumes that CILIP had forgotten about setting up the Women's network. All of this is one of the reasons I came to conference this year.
More light, hopefully! I'll update once I've spoken to Nick.

I've read more of the twitter replies and feel so very heartened!! I can go into this meeting with confidence!

Good luck. Just seen Nick Poole is a he/him/his and has a tweet about including pronouns in email signatures etc.

EmpressaurusWitchDoesntBurn · 08/07/2022 06:20

Are CILIP part of the TUC? Its LGBTQ group passed a motion about attacking the LGB Alliance recently.

RhubarbCrumbled · 08/07/2022 06:29

CILIP is a stand alone professional body but is obviously quite captured!

Good luck and thanks for speaking up!

AsTreesWalking · 08/07/2022 06:55

Oh well done OP. I'm a CILIP member, although v disillusioned with them in general. So glad to hear you've had support on twitter, I'm not on it myself, but rooting for you from my school library (and continuing to uphold Librarian standards by stocking books from more than one point of view)

I had a look on Twitter earlier. Excellent ratio! I hope it's not just because all the opposing viewpoints have me blocked (I am on some of the big blocklists simply because of who I follow, as far as I can make out).

AsTreesWalking · 08/07/2022 09:30

Interesting to read in the update from CILIP School Libraries Group this morning that the keynote speaker said that "as librarians we have a profession, we are professionals, and we show professionalism in what we do."
So not just stocking our libraries with the opinions we like, then?

ControversialOpening · 08/07/2022 10:25

Wow! They are getting spanked over there.

Imnobody4 · 08/07/2022 10:41

Retired librarian here and no longer a member I'm afraid but have you seen this
www.cilip.org.uk/news/606026/CILIP--standing-up-for-intellectual-freedom.htm

I've just read the article not the report and it's a bit anti gov censorship, LBGT prioritising, doesn't mention publishing and censorship or academic freedoms but haven't read report.

I'm hoping there will be a groundswell in favour of freedom of speech, can't see how librarians can do otherwise.

RhubarbCrumbled · 08/07/2022 11:34

The conversation has finally been opened up. There's an acceptance that this now needs to be tackled no matter how difficult it's going to be.
That's what has been said. First step is to make sure this is followed up on by starting the women's network and ensuring fair debate.

Still working as a library/info professional, gave up CILIP membership ages ago on the grounds of expensive and useless to me.
Tempted to re-join just to enter the fray. Sheeesh.

JanglyBeads · 08/07/2022 12:03

Thanks for highlighting this OP.
