GMB interview on gender neutral toilets

Just saw a fantastic interview with Dominique Samuels and Ramil Afflick on this matter. Dominique was brilliant and produced quoted data confirming the dangers to women using unisex toilets. The puzzled presenter looked shocked and said their producer would have to get those stats confirmed. And they did. Had to laugh when Ed balls introduced her as Dominic, she corrected him confirming she was a girl!

Sunday Times
Unsafe spaces in council swimming pools and sports centres.

134 complaints
120 were in unisex changing rooms
14 in single sex changing rooms

Do you have a link?

mrshoho · 05/07/2022 09:01

No sorry I don't but they normally have the program recorded on catchup or on demand. The interview was at around 7.45am today (so you don't have to watch the whole morning!).

Thanks for the heads up, I've just watched this. Suzanna seems to be getting braver in stating a GC view (which she has done more tentatively in the past)

Hysteria, hysteria!
Whilst the man makes valid points about changing society does he not think it would be a good idea to keep single sex facilities whilst that utopian society is made! Dominique is brilliant and factual. The bloke was completely dismissive and just kept saying it was hysteria.
90% of sexual assaults in council run sports hall were committed in mixed sex changing rooms in the study Dominique quoted. That means still 10 % happened in single sex changing. I can't believe people think this is acceptable.

"I'm not going to trivialise those issues".... but..."it's hysteria"....!

Immediately after saying he took the issues faced by women and girls seriously, he uses a sexist term to dismiss women's concerns. Nice.

wellhelloitsme · 05/07/2022 17:32

Ah yes the nice simple solution of "we need to get boys and men men to change their behaviour". No shit.

But in the meantime, let's throw women and girls under the bus and into dangerous situations and / or situations in which their privacy and dignity are compromised, while we try to solve the issue of male violence against women and girls that hasn't been solved for hundreds of years?

Seems like a great plan.

He came across as disarmed and panicked that Dominique had actual stats and was able to calmly state her case. No match for those things at all. An idealistic "let's just change the societal, systemic issue of misogyny and VAWG by telling men not to do bad things" doesn't cut it, mate.

BootsAndRoots · 05/07/2022 17:41

Ah, the same old "let's educate men not to do it". Like having a police officer who knew what was legal and illegal, yet he still broke the law to rape and murder someone.

The only men who will listen are those who wouldn't have committed such crimes in the first place. Those who commit crime usually become serial offenders, they know it is wrong, but have a compulsion to continue. You can't educate them.

Single sex areas provide a lot more protection than unisex areas.

BettyFilous · 05/07/2022 18:22

Dominique was great. She cited stats from a Warwick Uni study where 40% of girls reported being sexually harrassed or assaulted at school. 🌟 for Dominique for her evidence-based arguments. 🤡 for the other panellist saying we should usher in a brave new MVAWG world by doing away with the segregated spaces that keep women and girls safe.

mrshoho · 05/07/2022 18:31

Thanks Nancy for the link 😊. Yes Dominique won the argument hands down Ramil contributed nothing of substance and made himself look very silly. I thought the visual of the stats shown at the end made it very clear as to why anyone would think gender neutral toilets are a good idea.

Loved Dominique's side eye at 3.30. Rail, I'm not going to trivialise, then proceed to do exactly that when he wasn't completely dismissive.

Whatwouldscullydo · 05/07/2022 19:05

Its really being made clear in simple terms now that safguarding is being viewed as anti lgbt.

If that doesn't get people going " hang on" I'm not sure what will.

Safeguarding is for everyone. It's extremely homphobic to keep hiding behind the lgb insinuating that they all need to be able to remove safeguarding
In order to live their lives. The T should own it. Stand on your own amd say that you don't think women should have anywhere free from males.

DadJoke · 05/07/2022 19:12

Does anyone have a link to the study? I've seen the Sunday Times article, but I can't find the research anywhere.

I go with the Game of Thrones school of thought when it comes to the word but...

What a craven idiot that man was, I always want to ask how many women are acceptable as collateral as we go through the process of changing thousands of years of human nature, and would you really be happy to deal with the after effects rather than nip it in the bud if it happened to someone you love?

Wi Spa showed us what happens when women complain about sexual intimidation or harassment in mixed sex facilities, so excuse me if I find these promises to be empty twaddle.

@TheWeeDonkey I don't know what the GoT reference is?
