Dr Julia Shaw - kool aid drinker?

Just left the Chartered Institute of Fundraising’s Annual Convention. Ok admit I didn’t expect it to be a bundle of joy, but did expect to learn something and even maybe a bit of networking.

The Plenary Session was billed “Dr Julia Shaw is a German-Canadian psychologist, a memory hacker, an artificial intelligence scientist and champion of better workplace environments, working actively to solve problems relating to harassment and discrimination.”

To be fair she started off ok, discussed being bisexual in the workplace then listed some of the protected characteristics age, pregnancy, sex AND gender. Not gender reassignment.

However, thought I’d give her a it of leeway, she’s Canadian (or German-Canadian, whatever the hell that is), so obviously didn't understand the UK protected characteristics.

She proceeded to do a half hour sales pitch, on something she sells, which I completely switched off to, then discussed how being bisexual was rarely mentioned in work settings.

Near the end of the session as I was beginning to relax (fall asleep), the kool aid kicked in. The “interviewer” mentioned using pronouns in her emails to be inclusive. Blah blah normal crap.

Dr Shaw then advised reporting anyone talking negatively about pronouns!!!

Let me say that again, at a IoF Conference it was advised to report anyone (just) talking negatively about pronouns!!!

Reporting to who I’m not sure, the police? HR? Your mum?

She then spent 10 minutes discussing the whole alphabet of genders. Apparently you can wake up homosexual one day, heterosexual the next and then wake up bisexual.

The audience of IofF was (approx) 98% white, 75% woman and 65% middle aged.

They’re going to go back a spout this shit to their organisations. These people are on the whole good, kind, caring people, working on a lower than average wage as they are passionate about their charity.

I despair, I really do. It’s never going to end is it?

Not all fundraisers think like her you know 😏

DRX · 04/07/2022 15:09

I know I am one. Hence why I was at the conference. But the amount of nodding, middle aged white women agreeing to her nonsense was disheartening. :(

And knowing they'd take that nonsense back to their organisations was even more bleak.

And it's not true you can't "report" someone in the UK for talking negatively about pronouns, this isn't Canada!!

I’d have walked out. It’s incredibly disrespectful to use your professional development time to plug this agenda.

‘this isn’t Canada’ - said in the tones we used to use to say ‘this isn’t 1950s Moscow’.

Hahahehehoho · 04/07/2022 15:34

I think they might nod and agree, and if they work for some of the captured charities then they will be scared not to agree publicly but I’m not so sure it’s too late.

the IOF has many issues, they’re desperate to distract from the current sexual abuse long running saga and I think they’re trying to secure much younger members. It won’t work though.

Well (as I said to my DD) if said persons have fluid gender definitions - i.e homosexual one month/year, bi-sexual the next, pansexual the next...and so on...

I, previously defined as a heterosexual woman in her fifties - currently without any kind of relationship - reserve the same rights for myself i.e to ponder on whether or not my sexuality as is - really suits me - or whether I might like to choose another.

The fact that as a single mother in the midst of a global economic crisis and trying to hold myself and my family above water in said crisis - I don't have the bloody time or energy to do spend on reconsidering my sexuality (or indeed having one at all I'm too knackered presently). has got nothing to do with it...

It seems the over fifties women there - are deemed not to have a sexuality at all...how many of them deep down would feel like a change as well...and does anyone factor that in? I think not.

'this isn't China under Mao', etc.

Irrelevant to this discussion but I really hate the Kool Aid reference. When TRAs compare something to the Nazis, we, rightfully, object. So why is it acceptable to compare someone who believes TWAW to the Jonestown mass murder-suicide?

DRX · 04/07/2022 22:21

@StuntNun I had no idea and thank you for pointing it out. A quick google explained the Jonestown connection.

I assumed it was just a phrase to innocently describe someone a bit nuts!

So I stand corrected and will not use again.

I just googled the person and whilst her work on false memories sound interesting it also highlighted that she is currently studying for an MA in Queer History at Goldsmiths. Very much based on queer theory it appears so no surprise on her opinion.

Metabigot · 04/07/2022 22:49

What the fuck is queer history/ theory? That you can study for a master's?

I'm going to engage in some regressive pedantry and point out the the phrase predates Jonestown by over a decade and refers to Ken Kesey, the Merry Pranksters and LSD laced kool-aid. Popularized in a book written by Tom Wolfe, The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test.

BTW, most of the victims at Jonestown were shot - and mostly in the back as they were running away. They literally would not drink the kool-aid.
