If anyone still has lingering admiration for Jess Phillips this debate highlighted by Sarah Phillimore will water that down a bit.

I hate in particular the faux confused expression which is straight out of the Jeremy Vine playbook - and the way she says Kathleen Stock left her job - which is true, but... can she really not see the relevance to the subject of free speech.

I used to like her - but less and less on a daily basis.

She’s disingenuous in the extreme. Stock quit because her position had been made an untenable misery by bullies. Phillips knows this. She just doesn’t believe in free speech (except for her).

Jess Phillips is a local MP and for years I have not been able to work out if I admire her or if she's a brazen dishonest opportunist who is no friend to women. The latter I think.

aweegc · 01/07/2022 07:19

I didn't read that as faux confused, I read it as contempt.

She just seems incapable of adult discussion here. She continually interrupts him, doesn't listen to him, does the ask a question, then push back in seat with arms crossed, which is an aggressive stance. She's talking to someone with 20 years "lived experience" and just talks over him. Oh and she seemingly doesn't understand the difference between being an academic and being a politician.

But all that pales into insignificance beside the lack of defence of free speech and being against workers rights..as a member of Labour. WTAF?! I believe the Tories support this idea of academic freedom and this bill to support academics' rights - hope I've not misremembered - and The Workers' Party now are against the rights of these workers?

It's absolutely appalling.

But quite honestly bravo to Stonewall et al. who have managed to get Labour to twist itself in so many knots it no longer supports people who it claims to exist for. It's quite something.

Watching it again @aweegc I agree with your analysis. It is contempt. And she is actually modeling the anti-free-speech behaviour she claims is not a problem. Imagine facing that face screwed up at you across meetings everyday of your working life. And that would be the polite version of what some academics have to put up with. Not to mention what Rosie Duffield in her own party has to put up with.

Jess Phillips really is part of the problem. All women in public life suffer from her stifling attitude to free speech and women's rights.

She’s really disrespectful. Why are some people so unable to listen?

HMSSophia · 01/07/2022 09:25

I used to admire her.

NashvilleQueen · 01/07/2022 09:27

I think she's an actual idiot. Ive disliked her since her 'appeal to the masses' maiden speech when she said she hadn't seen an olive til she went to the HoC. Virtue signalling bullshit.

And that time she was rude to feminists who were outside the Labour Party conference. I can't remember what she said but it was something dismissive about domestic abuse victims when she said something like 'they're dead' and it was awful.

NashvilleQueen · 01/07/2022 09:30

I have misremembered the olives thing. But she did equate olives eating with some sort of quasi-poshness and it's fucking bollocks.
