Sorry if this has already been covered.

This makes shocking reading, that a talk by, for and about women can be cancelled because a handful of campaigners got a name wrong.

Well, I'm sure the protesters are against either Julie. But I agree it's ridiculous that these are the people the council are making high-handed decisions around. A clueless rent-a-mob. Can't wait for the lawsuit...

Even if they got the name wrong, the issue remains the same. They wanted to stop women speaking. I'm struggling to see why they wanted to ban Julie Burchill . I'm not too familiar with her beliefs but she's a woman and should be able to speak at an event. Even if people disagree with what is being said women must be allowed to speak.

Notmanybroadbeans · 29/06/2022 21:03

I don't think Julie Burchill has any time for genderism either, so I can well imagine they would want to ban her too. She doesn't exactly mince her words.

The whole thing is a total crock of shit. Including the council leader hiding behind two women councillors instead of publicly owning his decision. What a bunch of craven fools.

Banning women from entering and meeting in a public library is some new kind of low. But will there be any accountability for the decision makers involved here? It seems like they will just ignore it until it goes away.

Hi Priam, there’s been a thread running on this since Friday, if you search on Julie Bindel and cancellation it should come up, I think.

LoobiJee · 29/06/2022 23:24

Julie Bindel and MVAW talk in Nottingham, rather.

I'm raising this with Nick Poole at the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP) conference next week. Any questions or points people want raised please let me know.

I'd like to know why one library thought it was OK to invite a man wearing a dildo to the children's library while another thought it was ok to cancel a talk given by a feminist about VAW.
Something has gone very badly wrong.
