Gender in a H2022 grant application

Just a rant really

Horizon Europe is a funding programme for research and innovation funded by the European Community.

ec.europa.eu/info/research-and-innovation/funding/funding-opportunities/funding-programmes-and-open-calls/horizon-europe_en

I am contributing to a proposal, and have just seen that the section for the details of the lead of each participanting centre, includes:
Title
Name
Gender: woman / man / non-binary
Position
Department

'Woman' (or man) is a not a gender FFS

Is this the way things are done now?
Does nobody stop to think anymore?
Why do they even want/need this information?
I would have assumed that at some point it was to be able to assess the proportion of female/males awardees but surely it does not serve this purpose anymore?

Sorry, it really annoys me

We have a H2020 - last generation - by error our PI is down as female it the GA and is a male. Done all the reporting - had all the audits - the consortium agreement says he’s male. Never caused an issue.

on another note are UK projects still eligible for Horizon funding ?

We are not leading, just a partner

Can you still be a partner without us being in H2020? (Genuine question -
RGs not my thing at all!)

I am so glad they finally changed that. I was rageing that a third option wasn't available up and including H2020.

CatherinaJTV · 29/06/2022 15:00

and they need this info to keep tab on how many grants to go PIs with which characteristics (that includes gender, but also country etc).

In the UK personal characteristic data for academic staff and students includes both sex and gender - no reason why H2020 shouldn't. Though largely a moot point very sadly from now. Sad

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 29/06/2022 15:04

CRUK has only gender :/

snoochieboochies · 29/06/2022 15:28

I'd come back to ask them to define gender as I don't understand what they want me to put.

Could say you know there are 72 genders, or infinite, so it can't be referring to that as there's only three in the multiple choice. Are they not recording sex?

I'd ask questions. I would never assert in this debate because... well it opens a debate and there really isn't one.

"In the UK personal characteristic data for academic staff and students includes both sex and gender - no reason why H2020 shouldn't."

Major funders in the UK use similar questions to the one above. From a non-UKRI but government funded organisation (that uses Flexi-Grant)

"What is your gender? Male/female/prefer not to say"

I would assume that they actually mean sex here but it definitely asks for gender.

You were raging because a made up category hadn't been offered for a funding application?

Gosh.

...they need to know how many grants go to people who "feel they are not a man or a woman"...?
