Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

Not sexist, good ratio of male and female character toddler shows. Exist?

Sorry for the long title and not sure if this is the right place but want actual recommendations not just sniping about first world problems.

I have a toddler who is interested in television now. I'd like to show him shows that have a good spread of.female characters and not just a token pink one. (Looking at you Paw Patrol)

So far I've tried:
Bluey(sorry, I found it annoying!)
Thomas (ok, some girls but have run out of episodes.)
Bing(he wasn't interested)
Octonaughts(he wasn't interested)
My Little Pony (He's not interested)
Various old school shows which are very male heavy/bad: fireman Sam, postman pat
Pepper Pig is banned in our house. She's rude and badly drawn.

Just to say, we do limit his TV so I'd like what he watches to actually be good and not sending the wrong messages.

Does a not annoying, not scary good.ratio show exist or am I out of luck here?
Thanks

Let's Play on cbeebies is good as well- Rebecca and Sid take on jobs, but very often reverse the gender stereotypes.

honeybushbunch · 27/06/2022 21:01

My DD is a bit older now (9), but her favourites on CBeebies were (you can look on YouTube if they are not currently on iPlayer) — all pretty gender balanced and range from upbeat and energetic to charming and sweet:
Waybuloo
Abney & Teal
Sarah & Duck
Nellie and Nora
Show Me Show Me
Clangers
Melody
Dipdap

A bit older:
Bitz & Bob
Apple Tree House
Octonauts
Topsy & Tim
Andy’s Dinosaur Adventures
anything with Maddie
Tinga Tinga Tales

honeybushbunch · 27/06/2022 21:01

Oh and Teacup Tales!

Numbat2022 · 27/06/2022 21:06

How old is he? Mine watches completely different stuff now he's 3.5 to when he was 2, so his tastes may change a lot.

Numbat2022 · 27/06/2022 21:08

Something else he lives is Bounce Patrol on YouTube - Australian group who do songs and dances, some educational, some just fun. Their Halloween songs are brilliant 😁 They do tend to dress up as gender stereotypes though, annoyingly.

LadyApplejack · 27/06/2022 21:10

Rugrats
Pingu

Still find them very watchable as an adult too!

Squashpocket · 27/06/2022 21:49

I would find it hard to get worked up about anything on cbeebies really, it's all pretty gender neutral and inclusive.

My 2 boys loved Topsy and Tim, My world kitchen, our family, graces/Catie's amazing machines, maddie's do you know, numberblocks and dip dap.

Brace yourself though, my experience is that they start picking up the boys are cool/girls are rubbish narrative really early and you will have a constant fight on your hands to subvert it. They really do seem programmed to be tiny little sexists, bless them.

Well my 3&4yo have loved it for a good while.

No Tbf I think DS was prob 4ish but I wouldn't put it on for my 2 year olds 😂

DinoDay · 27/06/2022 22:21

Ooh I forgot. I really like Yakka Dee! Just silly really. And my DD2 likes Something Special as well.

FishfingerFlinger · 28/06/2022 12:41

I LOVE Octonauts in general but it is super annoying that the captain is a stereotypical white male upper class authority figure (I mean obvious may he is a polar bear so I cannot be certain of his race or class but he’s a bit of colonialist stereotype!)

He's Tom Chandler from The Last Ship in my head so I agree. Kwazii is Tex Nolan. I lvoe Octonauts and The Last Ship.

My little boy discovered Mickey Mouse clubhouse on Disney plus and it’s a huge hit in our house!

YessicaHaircut · 28/06/2022 13:14

Toddler DS (turning 2 tomorrow!) loves Grace’s Amazing Machines. I love it too, mainly because of the brilliant theme tune, by The Darkness. Very cool to see all the machines being driven by a woman, occasionally with a man as her ‘helper’!
Also a big fan of Yakka Dee, Numberblocks and Alphablocks. Plenty of strong female characters in Swashbuckle too.

GhoulWithADragonTattoo · 29/06/2022 13:56

Ben and Holly, Hey Duggie and Dangermouse if it's on are great.

SunThroughTheCloudsAt6am · 29/06/2022 14:13

My son loved Abney and Teal (I don't know how easy that is to get hold of now) - it's lovely, and gentle and very unusual. I wasn't impressed about it at first, but learned to love it (luckily, since my son must have watched every episode 100 times!) - it was on BBC, but I don't know if it still is.

SunThroughTheCloudsAt6am · 29/06/2022 14:15

Also everything on honeybushbunch's list, plus Charlie and Lola, and some maths thing he found on Netflix.

Cattenberg · 29/06/2022 14:21

Biggleton certainly avoids gender stereotypes.

honeybushbunch · 29/06/2022 14:26

Yes Charlie and Lola is fantastic! Forgot about that but my DD loved it. Good gender balance, funny and sweet.

TheGoogleMum · 29/06/2022 19:03

I think kids might like Bluey more if they're more of a pre schooler than a toddler, DD wasn't that bothered before but as a 3 and a half year old loves it.
She also loves Bing, Hey Duggee, teletubbies and the baby club. She's a bit old for the baby club now so it is on less often!

SleepingStandingUp · 29/06/2022 20:43

Yes Bluey is quite heavily reliant on the verbal interchange

AliasGrape · 29/06/2022 20:57

Second the recommendation for Puffin Rock if you have Netflix.

Moon and Me is a hit here too.

DD is currently obsessed with Odo which is on channel 5 in the mornings, I record that on series link - though it seems to only have about 5 episodes they just loop through.
The main character is male though, his little best friend/ sidekick possibly is too, though it’s not entirely clear either way. The camp leaders are female though. Either way they’re all birds.

Ben and Holly I think is quite balanced too.

I like Jojo and grangran but DD not on board yet.

I love Bluey but again DD not quite up for it yet.

ScrollingLeaves · 29/06/2022 21:00

In the Night Garden ( hypnotic, dreamy, soothing)
The Clangers
Sarah and Duck ( little girl, it doesn’t matter)
Jo Jo and Gran Gran (little girl but it doesn’t matter)
Teletubbies (annoying for adults, soothing for toddlers)
Bob the Builder (has a secretary but bit by bit they realise she can build too)
Come Outside ( pre-school old episodes on You Tube )

CthulhuInDisguise · 29/06/2022 21:04

Tweenies
Shiny Show
Come Outside
Tickabilla

My DS was enraptured by all of the above.

ParadiseLaundry · 29/06/2022 21:11

Bob the Builder (has a secretary but bit by bit they realise she can build too)

DS has been watching this recently and I thought she was (and had been referring to her as) his boss!

I wasn't paying that much attention obviously!

WooFighters · 29/06/2022 21:28

Wendy is the site manager in Bob the Builder if I remember correctly.
Yes Teletubbies was a big hit but he's grown out of it sadly.
Unfortunately, we don't do live TV as we don't use a TV licence so will only be able to find BBC if uploaded on YouTube etc.

He's enjoying dinosaur Train. Well, not the dinosaurs just the train lol.
I'm going to pull out a little list of things we can access and go through them one by one. He definitely knows what he likes lol.
Thanks again.
