Not sexist, good ratio of male and female character toddler shows. Exist?

Sorry for the long title and not sure if this is the right place but want actual recommendations not just sniping about first world problems.

I have a toddler who is interested in television now. I'd like to show him shows that have a good spread of.female characters and not just a token pink one. (Looking at you Paw Patrol)

So far I've tried:
Bluey(sorry, I found it annoying!)
Thomas (ok, some girls but have run out of episodes.)
Bing(he wasn't interested)
Octonaughts(he wasn't interested)
My Little Pony (He's not interested)
Various old school shows which are very male heavy/bad: fireman Sam, postman pat
Pepper Pig is banned in our house. She's rude and badly drawn.

Just to say, we do limit his TV so I'd like what he watches to actually be good and not sending the wrong messages.

Does a not annoying, not scary good.ratio show exist or am I out of luck here?
Thanks

The Wiggles!! 🙌🏻🙌🏻 I don’t find them annoying.

Bluey is the ultimate though OP, you’re mad!

MassiveSalad22 · 27/06/2022 18:44

Although. Wiggles don’t have a perfect m:f ratio.

Super simple songs and Catie's Classroom.

What about some studio Ghibli films as well? And many of the modern Disney films have good female characters.

Do not whatever you do let your toddler see blippi. You will regret it forever and ever. Meekah is better but blippi himself is some kind of weird love child of Donald trump and pee wee Herman.

I'm glad I'm not the only one to not get the Bluey love Grin

powershowerforanhour · 27/06/2022 19:06

Swashbucklers is fab and Captain Captain is my favourite!

Numbat2022 · 27/06/2022 19:11

Oh god, do not let your child watch Blippi! He's thick, his songs are shit and he is incredibly annoying. There's even a fake Blippi now (Flippi) who does an impression of him. shudder

Give Bluey another go. Most Cbeeies shows are pretty good for representation and equality.

I think you can watch them on YouTube, but when ds was small I really liked Me Too as you saw women going to work (from taxi driver to doctor), dads doing childcare, and normalised using childcare as well which is unusual in childrens programming

AtLeastPretendToCare · 27/06/2022 19:41

Definitely Numberblocks, it is a brilliant program and my youngest really got to grip with mathematical concepts through it.

Would also agree with Swashbuckle. Child contestants also sometimes feature children with disabilities which is nice to see.

My son loves Dinosaur Train and has done for a couple of years so I'd definitely recommend that.

Also if you have Netflix try the Magic School Bus. Our son has loved it since he was two, and it's really educational and fun.

Also on Netflix is Dragon Riders which is maybe for pre-school age rather than toddlers but I'm pretty sure there is an equal mix of boy and girl characters.

I love some of the things on Cbeebies - my favourites are Down on the Farm, Grace's Amazing Machines and Maddie's Do you Know. They've been a big hit with my son for a while although he's got a bit bored of them now. Also agree about Numberblocks - it's great.

SuperbOwls · 27/06/2022 20:04

Ooh and Bits and Bobs on cbeebies. My daughter loves that the little brother is relegated to the sidekick Grin

DinoDay · 27/06/2022 20:04

Cocomelon... maybe. Ticks some boxes but ah. I might have been captured after being forced into watching it 1000s of times. 2yo will not watch anything else. Can anyone remind me why it is hateful? I felt strongly that it was when I first saw it..

BunnyBerries · 27/06/2022 20:04

Have you watched the Julia Donaldson tv specials? Zog, and Zog and the Flying Doctors, about a girl who wants to become a doctor instead of a princess who sits in a castle.

Also if you have Netflix try My Neighbour Totoro, it stars two normal little girls and their family.

The newer Fireman Sam episodes definitely have two at least two female firefighters I'm sure and more girl characters who I didn't think were stereotypes.

SleepingStandingUp · 27/06/2022 20:07

Ooh yes def Bits and Bob's. She's cool, bro is sidekick and then she has an imaginary friend who's also a cool girl

Somuchgoo · 27/06/2022 20:07

An oldie now, but Powerpuff girls!

Loved Ben and Holly! What about Rupert Bear if you can find it. When my DC were little we thought that was lovely.

LaPufalina · 27/06/2022 20:16

Oh mine also loved Mira, Royal Detective on Disney+, numberblocks and alphablocks are both excellent and I quite enjoy Jojo and Gran-gran too, gives an insight into London-Caribbean culture as a PP says.

RedLemonade · 27/06/2022 20:24

@YouHaveNoAuthorityHereJackie yy. Give Bluey another try. My DC know if they ask “Can I watch some tv?” I’ll usually say no, but if they craftily ask to watch Bluey I will generally say yes (because I also want to watch it😊).

I can hear the opening music in my head!

Tried Bluey again this afternoon it's a definite no from him so I don't think I'll be pushing it.
Thanks for the suggestions. We have Netflicks so I'll work my way through them. :)
Ps. I don't like cocomelon either. Bad graphics and too busy. He's a poor deprived dear who only had Super Simple Learning instead.

Alphablocks are great. One of the first words my son read, because of the way they use the phonics was 'stink'.

He pronounced each syllable st-i-nk.
We still say it to this day!

Have you/your son tried Hey Duggee?

Billi77 · 27/06/2022 20:41

Mine loved Moon and me. I thought someone had spiked my tea with magic mushrooms..,

Billi77 · 27/06/2022 20:42

Another huge Hey Duggy fan here!

TastefulRainbowUnicorn · 27/06/2022 20:47

My two boys have loved maddie’s ‘do you know’ and ‘graces amazing machines’ from toddlers.

All the toddlers in my family have been obsessed with Do You Know? I think their parents learned loads too 😁.
