Falon Fox interviewed on Today show

Why did this person get air time with no confrontation of the injuries they gave an opponent?
From Wikipedia During Fox's fight against Tamikka Brents on September 13, 2014, Brents suffered a concussion, an orbital bone fracture, and seven staples to the head in the 1st round. After her loss, Brents took to social media to convey her thoughts on the experience of fighting Fox: "I've fought a lot of women and have never felt the strength that I felt in a fight as I did that night. I can't answer whether it's because she was born a man or not because I'm not a doctor. I can only say, I've never felt so overpowered ever in my life and I am an abnormally strong female in my own right," she stated. "Her grip was different, I could usually move around in the clinch against other females but couldn't move at all in Fox's clinch ..."

Was this the BBC radio interview?

In my opinion it's because the BBC hate women.

nauticant · 20/06/2022 08:55

The interviewer was Justin Webb, possibly the most GC-ish of the main news interviewers/presenters on the BBC.

I don't think Fallon Fox was chosen without thinking about their backstory they'd bring to the coverage.

Clangyleg · 20/06/2022 08:57

Fallon was challenged about why they were saying that the FINA decision would result in actual harm to trans people. Trans people apparently should not be excluded as it is discrimination the same as black people. I was also surprised that the actual harm inflicted on their opponent was not brought up. The other speaker Karen Pickering was clear about why this is a scientifically based decision. And how fairness and inclusivity are not compatible.

PaleBlueMoonlight · 20/06/2022 08:59

It was quite a good interview. Like all these things Justin let stand some of Fallon's assertions that were incorrect or missed the point or were ideologically driven (comparing exclusion of transwomen to exclusion of black women), which is frustrating (I don't think even Justin has a full understanding of the issues), but overall I thought it was good.

She was very good. I do wonder though if someone will ever make the pont that by including transwomen in female sport you are excluding women and girls who do not get the chance to compete.

Transwomen could compete in men's sports if they were not ideologically opposed to recognising their male physiology (and many do).

donquixotedelamancha · 20/06/2022 09:11

I think that's just his interviewing style. He tends to probe but allow people time to say what they want, rather than more confrontational interviewers. Generally I find it very effective.

He does seem to do it a bit more with the batshit interviewees on this topic but I'm pretty sure that's a choice to allow their words to speak for themselves, rather than getting bogged down.

Where there is no one for the other side he's more combative. I think it was an interview with Beh Cohen where he really roasted him.

BridasShieldWall · 20/06/2022 09:17

The Ben Cohen interview is amazing - one journalist interviewing … someone who isn’t. I think Justin Webb challenged him on assuming his identity to which Ben Cohen could only splutter.

PaleBlueMoonlight · 20/06/2022 09:17

Fair enough. Just frustrating when some statements are left to stand, but I should probably have more faith in the general public's ability to see through it (though my faith in that regard has been severely tested over the past years).

Danni677 · 20/06/2022 09:20

Karen Pickering was great, I thought- extremely calm and clear.

lanadelgrey · 20/06/2022 09:29

I think, given the limited time, his style is to let interviewees to dig their own holes and then stand back. Also given that this may be an uphill battle re the both sides approach, there may be a deliberate space left for complainants. Quite late news on a Sunday so dearth of interviewees

donquixotedelamancha · 20/06/2022 09:30

The Ben Cohen interview is amazing - one journalist interviewing … someone who isn’t. I think Justin Webb challenged him on assuming his identity to which Ben Cohen could only splutter.

The problem was that it generated no clarity because, despite being pressed hard, Cohen didn't answer any questions. That's fun once but not sustainable.

The great thing about letting Fallon Fox, Ben Cohen, etc talk (while contrasting it with someone with expertise) is they make themselves look like dicks.

donquixotedelamancha · 20/06/2022 09:33

I may be biased because I come from the sensible North but I think the vast, vast majority see right through it.

It is sunlight that has resulted in things like the FINA rule change.

This is not my experience in the North at all! I am constantly flabbergasted how people I thought were sensible have switched their brains off!

It's a false comparison to say it's the same as excluding black women.

Has any light-skinned person pretended to be of a different race to that which they were supposedly 'assigned at birth', in order to compete against people with darker skin?

I wondered if the inclusion of Fallon Fox and reference to MMA was an act covert GC genius by a booker. A lot of listeners will have been pulled up short with a “wait, what? They’re letting males fight women in martial arts bouts?” 😮 A bit of googling thereafter would bring many people to the foothills.

potniatheron · 20/06/2022 11:27

Fallon's probably just worried his days of punching women in the ring are nearing an end.

The comparison with Black Women is such a racist and screwed up little game TRAs like to play. No one GC has ever suggested that Black Women aren't women. It's a rhetorical game the TRAs use. Go on Lipstick Alley if you want to see what actual Black Women think about it. Clue: they aren't impressed, and they don't want TRA 'support'.

Has Owen Jones started tantrumming on Twitter yet? That would make what's already turning out to be a very good day even better.

That's what I think too. The comment about violence was unfortunate, to say the least, given Fallon's own personal history. It was good that Karen Pickering came on second so she could specifically contradict Fallon's assertion that any advantage is obliterated once trans athletes have reduced their testosterone.

Cone to sunny Lancashire, you'll be pleasantly surprised. SW et al have invested a lot in trying to capture health and social services but even there a lot of professionals push back- outside of these areas (plus academia and politics) there is no support for the nonsense.

donquixotedelamancha · 20/06/2022 14:16

What, he stopped? When was that?

Oh sorry, you mean about this specifically.

LOL! The standard OJ Twitter response to any unwelcome outbreak of sanity which cotradicts his purity bubble usually includes two or more of the following ingredients:

  • trans genocide
  • homophobic bigots
  • right wing conspiracy funded by US Christian fundamentalists
  • right side of history
  • vile / disgusting
  • homophobic bigots
  • broody lesbians (oh no sorry that's when he's trying to be funny)
GCMM · 20/06/2022 15:25

I thought it was a pretty poor choice of interviewee. Not only has Fox broken the skull of a female opponent, Fox said they enjoyed doing it!

RunSeaSurf · 20/06/2022 16:04

I thought the segment was good.
FFox came across as quite sullen and inarticulate. And devoid of any logic. The sports commentator then came on and sounded reasonable, considerate and intelligent.
Justin let the interviewees do the talking which in this case, worked a treat.

bellinisurge · 20/06/2022 17:08

Little Owen is taking time off Twitter to write a big book. Whoopee!

Fox came across as being totally demented-no physical advantage whatsoever conferred by going through puberty as a male? What fuck planet does that come from?
