i agree

TidyDancer · 16/06/2022 17:51

She's right of course, but coming from her it will automatically be dismissed by a lot of people.

Yeah, which is a good reason to ignore her.

Anyone with a brain can see that the only ways children and sex mix are in age appropriate sex and relationships education, not in teaching children about fetishes or taking them to sex shows. If good people want to push her anti-drag agenda then I will suport them. If she does it I'll keep my mouth shut because knowing insane right wing people support the other viewpoint is unlikely to make TRAs change their mind.

I never in a million years thought I'd be advocating for more "prudishness"... but then again I never thought we'd have a major "LGBT" charity pushing an agenda which included homophobia, misogyny and sexualizing kids.

Twilight7777 · 16/06/2022 18:10

I agree with her

achillestoes · 16/06/2022 18:32

When I was little we went to see pantomime and there were characters in drag (Widow Twanky etc). The drag isn’t the problem. The problem is how the performance has evolved into an expression of ‘queerness’, and how ‘queerness’ has become heavily sexualised and misogynistic in some contexts. If it was just blokes in spangly dresses making risqué jokes that children aren’t likely to get I wouldn’t care, but it’s not. It’s crotch shots and men calling themselves ‘Flo Job’ and ‘Anna Bortion’. So she probably is right.

Live4weekend · 16/06/2022 18:37

It should only be illegal if there are safeguarding concerns.

We have men in drag in pantomime....

achillestoes · 16/06/2022 18:42

Problem is, too many parents don’t seem to know what is child appropriate and what isn’t. So how do you say ‘only when there’s a safeguarding concern’?

MTG is looking to bar children attending drag shows or strip shows, according to the news item.

Is age appropriateness a concern?

Do you have different concerns for drags show and strip shows than pantomime? (I don't know how much of a pantomime tradition the US has.)

I don't support a ban no.

If it was overtly sexual in nature then I would not allow my children to see it.

But drag can also he very harmless and I have no objections to that at all.

I am of course not a right wing American and my views are very different on almost everything to them.

Musomama1 · 16/06/2022 21:28

Yeah the panto dame thing... they are a weird British thing but they are panto dames, end of story. They just represent pantomime dames!

Drag Queen's represent a kink, highly adult content, even Drag Race is on past the watershed, they now seem to represent the whole trans thing as the performers Instagram's will tell you. Google drag queen's and you get to people called Krystal Lubrikunt. I know someone who does a drag show and he would tell you it's filthy. 🤣🤣🤣. It's adult cabaret, come on.

Google panto dames and you get to Jack and the Beanstalk or Aladdin. Plus, we don't have panto dames reading to small children, they don't wear skin tight clothing or promote a 'queer' message.

MangyInseam · 16/06/2022 22:45

I really don't think panto, or things like male comedians or actors dressing as women for performances in sceth comedy, or Elizabethan plays, or whatever, are the same as a "drag show". There is a different history, meaning, and context. I tend to think with the term drag being used for such a very specific form of entertainment now it would be better to avoid using it for these other kinds of instances.

OvaHere · 17/06/2022 01:03

There should be a way of separating out what is adult entertainment without going overkill.

If drag acts had stayed in bars and clubs it would be easier, children aren't allowed in those venues and it's easier to police those venues that flout that. More difficult when supposed adults invite them into schools and libraries bringing them directly to the children.

When banning something you do have to be mindful of scope creep so the local theatre doesn't get caught up in a minefield whilst trying to put on some Shakespeare.

We manage it for other things. Children can't go to the local casino and gamble or buy scratch cards but they can play Monopoly and have a go on the Tombola at the school fair.

Not convinced MTG will be able to come up with something sensible though.

achillestoes · 17/06/2022 07:30

‘Children can't go to the local casino and gamble or buy scratch cards but they can play Monopoly and have a go on the Tombola at the school fair.’

Well exactly. Most of these controversies are because some people don’t understand differences of degree.

NecessaryScene · 17/06/2022 07:55

If drag acts had stayed in bars and clubs it would be easier, children aren't allowed in those venues and it's easier to police those venues that flout that.

There was at least one recent case where the event was in a bar, and protestors managed to get it stopped because of that. Somehow it hadn't occurred to anyone arranging it or participating that children are not allowed in bars in Texas or whereever it was.

It was almost as if they thought the bar had become "child-friendly" due to the presence of the drag queens.

ChagSameachDoreen · 17/06/2022 08:26

I do.

I don't want my daughter to watch a parody/caricature/mockery of women.

Just as I wouldn't take her to the parade in Belgium where they have caricatures of Jews.

onlything · 17/06/2022 08:41

We have men in drag in pantomime....

and it needs to stop, I'm sick of seeing a man acting the fool in womanface every Christmas when I take my grandchildren to the panto.

onlything · 17/06/2022 08:45

Just as I wouldn't take her to the parade in Belgium where they have caricatures of Jews.

Exactly this, the same with Zwarte Piet in The Netherlands.

Pantomime "dames" are degrading to women and outdated nonsense that's long past it's sell-by date.

RufustheFloralmissingreindeer · 17/06/2022 09:00

I got told the other day that panto dames are part of gay culture 😳

Costacoffeeplease · 17/06/2022 10:11

Yes, I agree too. Never been a fan of pantomimes either, and hated them even as a child. I’ve never been to one since.

So don't go. It's not compulsory.

Why should I have to stop going to pantomimes just so men can continue degrading women?

onlything · 17/06/2022 10:21

Because most people who do go to pantomimes do like the Panto Dames.

If you don't like booze, there's no need for you to go to a pub.

This is the right attitude. If you don't like them don't go. No one will complain unless you try and ban other people from going.
