Really deep, philosophical question: Does coloured hair signify you're a TRA?

I'm thinking of dyeing my hair a wild colour. In the past I've seen talk of 'blue fringes' as shorthand for TRAs. I don't fancy blue hair so that's okay.

But more recently, I've seen RadFems on Twitter talking about purple and pink haired people in the same way - as shorthand for TRAs.

I was really seriously thinking of dyeing my hair pink with either purple front bits or a hidden purple patch underneath - yet to decide. But does brightly coloured hair (of any colour) now signify TRA politics? Or am I over-thinking this!?

Cool people need to reclaim coloured hair!

This!! If you want to use a funky colour on your hair - go for it!!

@GCRich
I cannot imagine judging anyone on their clothing or hair colour. Sadly prejudging anything or anyone based on colours is increasingly common

There is definitely a look. It’s not green/blue hair on its own though.

Must be accompanied with a terrible haircut, ill fitting black clothes on someone slightly overweight with pasty skin.

Also that look on their face that they’ve never been told ‘no’ by their parents.

Oh, God, I am now worried that this is me. I have teal hair, pale skin, am overweight and usually wear an A-line black wool dress, scarf and a cardigan to work.

Bet you look wonderful Daisy !

People may scoff but I have noticed a correlation between blue hair and TRAs at protests. Why it is, if it signifies anything, I don't know. But having blue hair does seem to be common with that group.

Thanks for all the comments on this thread. I went Crayola pink.

My GC principles are still very much in tact.

Excellent. I would post a picture of mine but it is all faded and needs redoing next week!

I always think the last few years have been a hellova roller coaster for the blue rinse!

I'm an old, grey, GC feminist - so I've gone for a block of purple with a flash of Green in mine. Love the nod to suffragette colours.

Just some pink hair…

It’s w handy stereotype along with beards and pronouns in the bio. It certainly isn’t a catch all though and wouldn’t stop me from dying my hair a bright colour (the quick ugly fade would stop me though).

100Stickers · 22/06/2022 10:28

Its funny, i was discussing this with someone recently - I was considering cutting my hair short but was worried about looking like a tra....i am slightly over weight and nerdy with a few piercings 😬but it wouldnt stop me. What put me off in the end was the cost of constant hair cuts to keep it looking good

Top-up toners are your friend. TBH, I find that going neon/insane colours at first means a nicer fade.

I have very dark / black hair, but lots of white hair coming through as I turn into an old crone. 😁😁
I've thought to slap on some funky colours and see how they show up on the white/grey hairs. What colours would any of you recommend? Is blue meant to be the one that fades the quickest?

Girlwithkaleidoscopehair · 22/06/2022 18:13

Thanks! I have nearly-white hair under that. They say white hair doesn’t dye well but mine seems ok- I just leave the dye in for hours (because counter-intuitively bright colours aren’t as toxic or allergenic as the chemical I’m dark brown dye - so no burning).

FWIW blue dye on grey fades the nicest - when I had it blue I used to really like the steely bluey grey it faded to - like faded jeans.
