Drag Queen Story Time

First time posting here, so not sure of the etiquette. My apologies if this is the wrong place to raise these concerns.

Reading Borough Council is planning to hold Drag Queen Story Hour events in our libraries during the summer holidays. I’ve written to my MP, my councillors, and the Head of the Library Service to raise concerns. I think drag is entirely inappropriate for children, as it is a form of adult entertainment, highly sexualised and misogynistic, that blurs boundaries and undermines safeguarding.

The response Ive had is simply that they have received very few complaints so no reason to cancel.

Has anyone had any experience of tackling their local library over this issue? Grateful for any tips.

Also, if you live in Berkshire ,would you be willing to write and share your concerns?

thanks!

CW: nudity/drag queen walking about with a 3 year old

captioned 'children belong at drag shows!!!! children deserve to see fun & expression & freedom'

'fun' 'expression' and 'freedom' are looking a bit different from the panto.

Beyond belief. I actually feel sick watching this.

There's lots of TRAs turned up now to counter protest the women with more arriving all the time.

Does Titania Trust know how to take a photo without a sexualised pose? And councils think that this is good messaging for children? and the messaging of the last name 'Trust' too? Fine for an adult entertainer, not fine for children's entertainment.

Drag is arguably an art form, so too, arguably is burlesque and poledancing. People can dress however they wish, but should be mindful of what is appropriate for the situation. It's odd, but do you think the guy playing Aida would have got the gig as himself?

Are you arguing that straight people can't be flamboyant or dress up? Or that you can't be gay without conforming to regressive stereotypes? That's what we want to teach children?

This is the point so many people are missing

i would strongly object to ANYONE wearing sexualised clothing to read to small children

we wear (or some folks do) sexualised clothing to give signals to those we meet that we are thinking about sexual encounters or at least looking for a meet up that may lead to “romantic” or sexualised relationships.

if I saw a woman at work looking like a drag queen I’d feel very uncomfortable. Not only would it not be professional it is immediately putting me in the middle of whatever sexualised fantasy she was having when she got dressed that morning. And wondering about who she wants to give that signal too. At very least it would be unprofessional.

I wouldn’t accept a bloke turning up to work in bondage gear either.

and I wouldn’t want to manage someone who rocked up to work as a drag g queen - not because I think what he wants to do in his own time is any of my business, but my business is his time I pay for and I want him to focus on my business not his sexualised alter ego

people wear clothes that are associated with seeking different imagery because they are sexualised. To pretend otherwise is disengenuos

if kids aren’t shown boundaries of where sexualised imagery stops and starts, particularly little kids, they’ll not know how to reinforce those boundaries once on their own. It’s why society has taboos. They are safety nets for sake of societies well-being. Sure, their are taboos that could do with breaking down- but sex and kids ain’t one of them

I didn't read it that way. I'm plausibly filling-in with my knowledge of Glinner's activement involvement over the years and what it's cost him.

I read it as him expressing apprehension that some events would involve altercations between self-identified anti-fa and right wing extremist groups. Similarly, he was arguing that the risk of altercations and escalation is unacceptable and the more so when it's highly likely that young children are present.

What is this thing that if someone expresses an opinion they are somehow directing how others must behave or attempting to control them somehow? It's an opinion piece. It's his opinion. If you disagree then just say so and say why.

Maybe re read the article. Graham is hardly saying this is he?

This isn’t what he’s saying.

Absolutely. He explicitly puts the safeguarding of toddlers and other young children first and foremost in his piece.

FrancescaContini · 04/08/2022 20:18

I sometimes wonder at the reading comprehension abilities of some posters here. The article is actually written very simply.

And nuns!

Co-organising counter protests are the"Trans Pennine Travelling Sisters, a group of nuns who support LGBT+ communities."

I believe they're an offshoot of the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, so not quite the kind of order that most people might expect...

Ramblingnamechanger · 05/08/2022 05:17

And if I see LGBT plus offered as justification I will explode. This has absolutely nothing to do with the L, and very little to do with the G, or even the T. Why not just advertise the events as cross dressing men taking the piss out of women ? There are plenty of performers out there who need work and aren’t performing fetishistic woman face. Young lesbians are not going to be influenced in a good way by these so called role models, neither is anyone else frankly.

Helleofabore · 05/08/2022 06:58

’peaceful’ protests? From these supporters? I doubt it will remain peaceful at all if the other group turns up. But maybe the Leeds protests will be different. Maybe, just maybe they will indeed be peaceful.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 05/08/2022 08:36

I recall wayyyyyy back in around 2016 when I was trying to get my head around this stuff, posters here predicting that socially conservative authoritarians would use all this nonsense as an excuse to discriminate against people of their choosing.

and lo and behold it is happening. I kind of wish you lot weren't so good at predicting the future 'cos some of the things you say are scary

Does that reporter think these are actual nuns?

A mission of queer travelling nuns serving LGBT*IQA communities along the Trans Pennine way. Founded by Sr Polly Amarosa of the Blessed Merci Beau Cul and Bona Aris

She briefly thought she might like to be [a nun], but realised the Pope wasn’t ready for shaven-headed, pagan-goddess-worshipping, manly bisexuals who furiously moved church pews around and advocated the benefits of lots of sex.

Sr Polly’s name is multilingual – English, French and Polari – half of it says she is full of love for the world, the other half just says ‘nice arse!’ more than once.

pollyamarosa.blogspot.com/

Polly Amarosa is, of course, male. It says this on his 'about me' on his blog.
