Drag Queen Story Time

First time posting here, so not sure of the etiquette. My apologies if this is the wrong place to raise these concerns.

Reading Borough Council is planning to hold Drag Queen Story Hour events in our libraries during the summer holidays. I’ve written to my MP, my councillors, and the Head of the Library Service to raise concerns. I think drag is entirely inappropriate for children, as it is a form of adult entertainment, highly sexualised and misogynistic, that blurs boundaries and undermines safeguarding.

The response Ive had is simply that they have received very few complaints so no reason to cancel.

Has anyone had any experience of tackling their local library over this issue? Grateful for any tips.

Also, if you live in Berkshire ,would you be willing to write and share your concerns?

thanks!

It's never been more important than ever for groups such as the LGB Alliance to exist and survive. Despite Mermaids doing all they can to wipe them away and bankrupt them with pointless legal cases. The trans movement know once the piggyback on the LGB community is taken away so to is the support they achieved in such an underhand way. Allison Bailey and others could see this way back when they realised an alternative to Stonewall was needed to support the LGB community.

When far right groups are involved with protesting it often plays into the trans activists hands with claims of homophobic abuse. You can see it in the way news reports are written turning the protests into hate crime against LGBT minority groups. We need to keep plugging away that it is the Drag/trans element that has no place in libraries and schools.

socially conservative authoritarians

Yet one side of the 'debate' constantly warned of this whilst the other supported their work with constant "well Hitler thinks the sky is blue too" type remarks.

You’d think people who are opposed to “socially conservative authoritarians” would try to avoid boosting support for them by aggressively recruiting Mx Moose Knuckle to read stories to other people’s children. DQST is an absolute gift to socially conservative authoritarians.

But it’s not as if the men’s sexual rights authoritarians are any better. They’re two sides of the same oppressive coin, and they can all fuck off to the far side of fuck.

Musomama1 · 05/08/2022 11:00

I wish the far right wasn't getting involved. It's just a turf war between the black pampers and conspiracy theorists. News articles are only focussing on the far right groups, when by far most people quietly objecting will be anything but, just reasonable people from any political group or none. These people are the most persuasive but aren't getting a look in now.

Also, we can see that the TRA group are rent a mob that go down and yell insults and intimidate the Standing for XX groups - this isn't getting reported either that both groups are problematic.

Yes. It is said to drive home the point that just because your point of view coincides on one particular point, you are not actually aligning with that group or person.

Not sure what you think your point is.

Do you think that people using weak and meaningless arguments such as ‘look at who also has your point of view’ are attempting to do anything but silencing opposing views?

Would you prefer instead that women answered differently, maybe instead pointing out all the horrific examples that people who support the prioritising of another groups rights over those for females as who those people’s views align with? Would that have been better?

Shall I give you some examples so you can judge whether making a retort of ‘well x thinks the sky is blue’ is better or worse?

Happy to. I have some quotes from transitioned males that show clearly their contempt for all females in their misogyny.

Do you think maybe one group of people can stop trying to align feminists with right wing extremists? Considering the likelihood of the many left wing women would change allegiance as suggested is ridiculous to even mention.

But do continue to attempt to paint those who declare feminists as being either aligned with right wing groups or responsible for those group’s actions as being righteous. Because it gives readers another example of the inane tactics used in an attempt to discredit feminist everyday. Well done.

I’d run a million miles in the opposite direction to keep my children away from a man who’s genitalia is so clearly visible through his clothing, and who’s obviously enjoying this fact.

I'm at leeds central library. There are about 5 security staff on the door checking bags. Very welcoming for dc 🙄

I'm not really surprised. Given the nature of the protesters on both sides, the chance of things getting out of hand is not small.

Lots of public venues do that, it's completely normal.
Did when we went to the pantomime at Christmas, did when we went to a children's theatre show a few months ago.
Didn't see anyone, parents or kids alike batting an eyelid at it as the queue to get in was moving

Helleofabore · 06/08/2022 12:05

Sorry? A library has 5 security staff on the door and janet assured us that is normal… like a theatre is equivalent to a library?

ok.

Sexdoesmatter · 06/08/2022 12:06

Yes, because the security guards had nothing to do with adult sexualised story time. Or mysoginistic parody of women story time 🙄. They checked my daughter's bag - it had her teddy in it

GoodJanetBadJanet · 06/08/2022 12:11

It is normal to have several security on the door checking bags when you go to public events, including family oriented ones.
Nothing strange about that.
Like a theatre is equivalent to a library? Ok
Yes, as in its holding a public family event - not sure why that's hard to understand?
There'll be people checking bags at a public event.
Maybe not so much when there's just the odd one or two person trickling in and out on a random usual day.

Hey Sexdoes,

How many people attended the event there today?

No idea sorry. We popped in first thing to get a book and don't know what's happened since

We popped back and were really surprised to see how many people were outside. Quite a few police and security people there. I've written a further letter of complaint to Leeds libraries.

Cheekymaw · 06/08/2022 15:07

At the DQSH in a city in Hampshire yesterday, a man on his tea break from work tried to use the library to borrow some books for going on going on holiday and wasn't allowed in. Everything stops for DQSH. Never mind the council tax /tax ppaying residents. I also received a lovely email from my Unison Women's rep(luckily I left a few weeks ago when they voted against the Nordic model without most of their membership being aware of this)requesting that I protest this bunch of bigots and fascists . Unison can do one . Pity we have the extreme right protesting DQSH. But they can sense a nonce a mile off for obvious reasons.

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 06/08/2022 15:14

Large turnout of TRA's trying to stop parents protesting, but the police have cordoned them off.

It's plausible that a number of them

  • are parents themselves

  • aren't TRAs but are present for other reasons or have been taken in by the forced teaming with gay rights.

KittenKong · 06/08/2022 15:17

Seems like some people have been on lockdown for too long and have been on social media too much. Whipped up by ‘outrage’ and looking for a fight. Women are always a good target.

TopKnotch · 06/08/2022 15:30

Really shocked by the framing of all of this by Leeds Libraries and Aida H Dee's social media.

It is really, really scary to see that the library service has switched off commenting on SM.

How can it be that public services cannot understand that the voices raising questions about this should be at least listened too?

The pride flags festooning the library on the same weekend that the Julie Jarman articles tell us that those flag should signify to women that their boundaries are being breached?
