They say on their website they are for women only, but does anyone know if the WI allow male bodied people who “identify as women” to join? I’d like to join our local one but this would be an issue for me. Thanks in advance.

They certainly did. Its one of the reasons I chose not to join.

Toohottt · 12/06/2022 20:25

What’s the point of a women only organisation if it’s not exclusively women?! pointless really!

the WI should be a sanctuary for anyone whose been abused. Which is a hell of alot of women…

I imagine the numbers of TW are low?

Theeyeballsinthesky · 12/06/2022 20:32

WI are TWAW

Featuring TW on the cover

McDuffy · 12/06/2022 20:33

Think tweeting about it was what got Glinner banned from Twitter

GoodJanetBadJanet · 12/06/2022 20:33

The WI is an inclusive organisation so you won't like it then.

ZaraSizeMedium · 12/06/2022 20:35

Unfortunately the WI allow men to become members.

picklemewalnuts · 12/06/2022 20:36

They totally are. I won't be joining on principle. If a women's organisation doesn't know what a woman is, I've no time for it.

Theeyeballsinthesky · 12/06/2022 20:38

in the upside down “inclusive” means including men in womens organisations, sport & prisons

somehow though we don’t allow ppl to self identify into other protected characteristics though. Odd that it’s only women who have to give way

janesmithsdog · 12/06/2022 20:45

Oh, I’m a bit gutted by that.
Is anywhere still single sex these days ffs??

OP posts:
EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 12/06/2022 20:46

WI stopped being for women a long time ago. Kathleen Stock wrote about them, amongst others. (Twitter thread no longer exists but some quotations here.)

The men’s pool at Hampstead Heath.
The Garrick Club
The East India Club

Ohhh. You mean single sec spaces for women?

Don’t be silly.

Motorina · 12/06/2022 21:33

Three times I changed sec to sex. Every time my bloody phone changed it back. There’s probably a metaphor in that.

janesmithsdog · 12/06/2022 22:58

Ha, I knew what you meant.

I just feel so sad that even an organisation with women in it’s TITLE is so quick to give up on the word having any meaning.

God I hope this tide turns soon.

Where I live there is a WI which doesn’t know what a woman is. There is also a private members club. Think, village hall style, cheap beer etc. This club clearly states on its website that is for men only. See men don’t have a problem with their private members clubs. Yet us women bend over backwards to be fully inclusive.

The Men's pool at Hamstead Heath is single sex? What about the Women's pool at Hamstead Heath?

Does that mean it is only men (who say they are women) who get carte blanche to get undressed in front of women and view women getting changed?

donquixotedelamancha · 12/06/2022 23:28

They are both mixed sex now. Thing is, how many women will actually use the men's pool?

Toohottt · 13/06/2022 04:25

Nowhere is women only now, so sad. 😥

oldwomanwhoruns · 13/06/2022 04:40

The Women's Rights Network is women only, you could join us 😀

OMG Janet, you can't say that something's "inclusive" when in fact it's horribly exclusive! Why do you think poor Peter Keigan had to start the Men's Institute?

Odd that this thread has come up now, as I was at an event yesterday where I was taken aback to see the WI stall, staffed by members which included an obviously biological man.
Women can't have anything for themselves any more. 😡

lapasion · 13/06/2022 08:06

Our local one does and is very vocal about it. They even had a very patronisingly titled event called ‘Have you ever met a trans woman?’ Boring.

DorkfromYork · 13/06/2022 08:16

I've just joined Women's Rights Network so thanks for the info

This post contains at least 3 times the RDA (Recommended Dietary Allowance) for irony.Does anyone know what the upper safe level on irony is, where over-consumption moves from of no further nutritional benefit to toxic?

Actually, studies show that up to 20% of MNers are irony deficient as they are lack the gene for digesting irony - it just passes straight through, they can't absorb it at all.

From the symptoms, I think that's highly like to be the case for PP.

GoodJanetBadJanet · 13/06/2022 10:56

They are inclusive of all women though whether you like it or not
If you don't want to go because of that, then that's up to you of course.
