Gender Unicorn

Attended an lgbt+ event and was shown the following. Really obfuscated the entire time the difference between sex and gender. I saw a couple of subtle challenges but heard a lot of bekind nonsense.

Just posting to despair really.

So there are two sexes, and sex and gender are separate things?

That's not what the Head of Trans Inclusion at Stonewall says.

Are we supposed to put our faith in one or another of these people? Or should we consult data to find out?

Rightsraptor · 12/06/2022 07:58

Was this used for adults?

ahunf · 12/06/2022 08:21

Recently a couple of kids in my daughters class (Y7) don't want to be classed as a gender or now want to be known as he / him and she's so scared she will get it wrong and be picked on. She's known these kids for 10 months but has got used to saying she / her. I don't advise her as I'd be worried myself.

ahunf · 12/06/2022 08:22

Sorry nothing to do with your post but I didn't want to make my own and have people pile on?

Faccthefacker · 12/06/2022 08:49

Why is there apparently a wrapped sweetie over the unicorn’s genital area? So weird. Just leave it blank, no?

It's meant to be DNA / a double helix 🧬 but is a crap drawing

becausetrampslikeus · 12/06/2022 08:57

Yikes it does sex and gender as different things but eliminates any sex based attraction-

Ohhhhhh.

Would never have guessed that.

serendipitea · 12/06/2022 11:09

It's probably good to archive this as in the picture male and female still refer to "assigned" at birth. (We've seen these terms also now being co-opted.)

(But do doctors really "assign" babies as other or intersex??)

Artichokeleaves · 12/06/2022 11:15

The 'assign' thing as I understand it has been co opted from previous times when it was harder to use the genetic medical information to identify sex in the tiny percentage of babies born with DSD. 'Assign' meant 'best guess' in that sense. This is no longer the case.

There is not a sorting hat in maternity units, no one 'assigns' a sex, it is observed and identified almost always at scans before birth, often months before birth.

It is however useful to political agenda to phrase it like this, and imply that sex isn't identifiable without full chromosome analysis and then is not binary. Which is rather like saying that because a tiny proportion of babies are born with differences in limb development, the human race is not bipedal. Tis tedious.

Artichokeleaves · 12/06/2022 11:16

And obviously has zilch to do with an unambiguously and typically developed male or female person who chooses later in life to identify as TQ+.

It is merely politically helpful.

FemaleAndLearning · 13/06/2022 01:03

Just as crap as the gender bread person.

MangyInseam · 13/06/2022 01:50

So, maybe I am really dense, but I don't understand what the unicorn has to do with it all. Why not a gender platypus or polar bear? It seems even more random than the GI Joe/Barbie diagrams.

oldwomanwhoruns · 13/06/2022 04:20

It's all so cr*p isn't it.

It always gets me that these little dinky pictures show such a MALE vision of the world. That we are driven by this thing that lurks between our legs, which is somehow unrelated to the rest of our body? But it doesn't work like that for women. Our entire bodies work as erogenous zones.

So the whole concept is mysogynistic and man-centred. I hope that you complained about this teaching, OP? It's nonsense, presented as fact.

Empowermenomore · 13/06/2022 06:26

I also saw a sweetie @Faccthefacker and it tails with the unicorn imagery that is aimed at kids. The ‘get them young’ approach. Very few well intentioned adults would see how this inoffensive unicorn will conduct girls to wish for an otherwise unnecessary removal of breast.
Sad times.

derob · 13/06/2022 06:34

I'm genuinely confused about what they think the difference between gender identity and gender expression is. Surely, even if I believed in an inner gender identity, how I express this is highly personal and could change according to circumstances. Does it need a special category? And what are we supposed to do, for example, if someone's sex is female but their gender identity is male and gender expression is female? What would count as 'misgendering' here?

yetanotherusernameAgain · 13/06/2022 08:31

I don't understand what the unicorn has to do with it all.

It's actually quite apt (which probably wasn't the intention): it's a fictional being. We know enough about unicorns to be able to talk about them, recognise one when we see an image of one, even produce 3 dimensional versions of them (eg cuddly toys), but ultimately we know they are fictional and don't actually exist.

Although doesn't that unicorn look more like a hippopotamus? Maybe it just identifies as a unicorn.

RoyalCorgi · 13/06/2022 09:04

Not only is it crap, it doesn't make any sense. Why would you need a double helix over the unicorn's genitals? Why?

As for the choice of unicorn, it's like the similar genderbread person: the aim in both cases is to appeal to children.

DeaconBoo · 13/06/2022 10:15

Not only is it crap, it doesn't make any sense. Why would you need a double helix over the unicorn's genitals? Why?

It's a diagram (scientific...) and the little drawings are labels which are all expanded on in the key. So sex = dna, most obvious in genitals, gender expression is the green dots, the two "attraction" hearts are located in the chestal area, and gender identity is a thought coming out of your head... see?

Dancingwithhyenas · 13/06/2022 10:18

What is emotional attraction? Isn’t that friendship?

Artichokeleaves · 13/06/2022 15:20

"my gender is one that means I want sex without emotional attachment or any kind of relationship or connection or responsibility for the person I'm having sex with..."

Gosh my generation had a whole other word for people like that.

We didn't go encouraging girls to enable them and regard it as something to celebrate or look for in a partner either ffs.
