On the NHS at an expensive London clinic.

I've appreciated and followed him on Twitter for years and know how bad the dysphoria is and yet my heart sinks that even someone as thoughtful and articulate as him thinks that this will solve anything.

I wish Fionne very well. As for the crowdfunding, no one had to donate and there are many many sillier things to donate to.
i did see someone discussing a study result that showed surgery made trans people happier. When you looked into the data it actually showed that educated professionals earning a good wage were more likely to be happier after surgery, but not others. Presumably this reflects when it’s a considered mature decision. It seems
quite likely that Fionne will be happier after this and I don’t begrudge that for a minute.

Yep. I've slept on it and I'm still incredulous that there's a memorial thread here to somebody's penis.

I completely agree with you. Maybe better on a website/thread on operations/procedures carried out on male genitals.

Will we be getting an update on prostate checks on particular individuals next? Or, will we now all be sharing if the prostates of men in our lives have to be removed. Totally relevant to sex (the male sex) and better discussed in Health.

TinselAngel · 09/06/2022 09:09

Maybe all us trans widows should start a thread each time one of our exes has surgery?

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 09/06/2022 09:12

I keep being brought up short by your posts @TinselAngel

Always another perspective that needs to be addressed by society and law makers alike.

Or in this case, just feminists not wringing their hands over somebody's penis (so to speak).

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 09/06/2022 09:21

On that I am with Helen Joyce. I don't care about the individual, really, can only bring myself to be passingly polite. But I do care about the principles underlying all of this. The legalities, the deceptions, the effects it is all having.

TinselAngel · 09/06/2022 09:24

Well we've got bugger all chance of trans widows perspective being considered by policy makers when it's not even considered on FWR.

I don't remember any 'good luck recovering from your surgery' threads about any of the surgery the Kardashians have, or when twitter celebs have breast lifts.

It's all just cosmetic surgery nothing less, nothing more. Is it just that the cock is the most sacred part of anyone body?

TinselAngel · 09/06/2022 09:36

I can understand men being terribly empathetic about the loss of the holy phallus, but women need to get a grip (so to speak again)

Hagiography · 09/06/2022 09:37

It's an extension of sympathy towards a person. Much as I've extended sympathy towards many women on here before when they've had upheaval in their personal life.

Sympathy for upheaval caused by elective surgery? I've missed those threads

Hagiography · 09/06/2022 09:47

See a couple of posts above, where I extend sympathy to Samphire over her health problems? Like that.

JulesRimetStillGleaming · 09/06/2022 09:49

No Tinsel. It's a mental health condition for which the treatment is drastic and only works in a proportion of cases.

This is like sympathising with someone who has had entrenched depression for decades and has decided to go for ECT.

For some, it works and they never look back. For others it doesn't work or worse, causes long-term damage.

It's possibly to sympathise with someone battling a condition who decides ultimately they want to try the surgery.

I also follow a lot of trans men/ detrans men on Twitter who are in a constant battle over whether to re-start testosterone again. I can have sympathy for them too.

Is it not more akin lobotomy than ECT - as that is the physical removal or alteration of part of the brain. So, in the case of genital surgeries such as this, it is the physical removal or alteration of the genitals.

JulesRimetStillGleaming · 09/06/2022 09:53

Except we don't do lobotomy on the NHS anymore but we do do ECT despite the known risks.

Have you read the trans widows threads?

JulesRimetStillGleaming · 09/06/2022 10:01

Fail to see the relevance.

I used to be in a relationship with an AGP male myself.

The trans umbrella covers a very broad spectrum of people now.

Not all trans people have dysphoria

Not all trans people are heterosexual

Not all trans people are AGPs

Not all trans people have surgery

Those with extreme dysphoria who we used to call transsexuals still exist.

Those with AGP who decide surgery is for them exist.

And so do a whole raft of people in between.

Yet, the point remains the physical removal or alteration of the genitals is more akin to lobotomy than ECT. Unlike ECT, the purported aim is not to return suboptimal function of that organ to optimal function.

Some might even argue that it is done for elective, cosmetic reasons to boot.

NotBadConsidering · 09/06/2022 10:11

I don’t see it that way at all Tinsel.

I see this story as the living, breathing embodiment of what Helen Joyce is saying. This is a hugely drastic final step, no doubt not undertaken lightly. But it has required accommodation. It is surgery funded by the NHS, the only way it can be accommodated is for it to be done privately. Fionne will undoubtedly have problems with this, because there is a high rate of problems, which will need specialist follow up. Fionne’s physically normal body has been changed into something that will require lifelong attention and medical treatment. Of course Fionne would argue that that is worth it to balance the mental health aspect, but it’s still an accommodation that is needed: surgical outpatient appointments for life. And then there’s the risk that Fionne still doesn’t find long term mental health improvement.

And people think the Helens are “genocidal” for wanting fewer people like Fionne doing this 🙄. In what “sane world” is this treatment good? To take a physically healthy body and medicalise it for life to treat mental health distress? Fionne clearly sees this as the only way, but it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t strive to find a better way for the future and make sure that if it’s going to happen, it’s as rare as hen’s teeth.

So do we feel sorry for the AGPs now as well?

Because “gender”.

If those with BDD had any sense, they’d follow the example of the Eunuch fetishists and organise as a group, get cosy with WPATH, get themselves seen as an “identity”, get a chapter in WPATH’s standards of care and Bob’s your uncle, you’ve got some validation that doctors can cling to, legitimising the leg removal surgery 🙄.

Is this a very long collection of slogans or is it the 'Responsorial Psalm' for the First Thursday after Pentecost?

ChuckBerrysBoots · 09/06/2022 10:35

To be fair, it’s different from commenting on a celebrity as anyone who is involved in GC Twitter will know of and likely have interacted with Fionne over the years. I’ve not been on Twitter for a long time but when I was I always enjoyed their posts and wish them well.

TinselAngel · 09/06/2022 10:52

You've all interacted with me but I wouldn't expect a thread on FWR if I decided to have a breast reduction.
