If a company has the new pride flag as their background do you think that it means they subscribe to the erasure of women?

Westminster uni is flying the new new version with the ‘intersex’ circle. Yup I see it as anti woman and homophobic.

I’m in marketing /or too and know it’s a crock - when I was asked to rebadge our website with the new flag I asked for a fill CBA on doing this - and funnily enough it never came.

As I’ve always said, if Sales thought kicking puppies though a fan was gwt the one sale they’d be down at battersea looking for strays.

FlibbertyGiblets · 06/06/2022 17:06

I quite like spotting the original Pride flag, I like to think that those sporting this one haven't been Stonewalled [thumbs up]

KittenKong · 06/06/2022 17:08

Me too - the original (and best) is still clinging to the original ethos of acceptance.

FlibbertyGiblets · 06/06/2022 17:08

....as opposed to the flag with the encroaching arrows, you know what I mean.

exactly this, Kitten.

I remember - a million years ago - being stupidly excited to see a pride flag outside a wee bar on some back street in Amsterdam and it being a really lovely, friendly, happy locals hangout.

Now I just swerve places with the ‘bow. Soho is all nouveau pride, and as for all the businesses draping themselves when i know they pay £££££ for ‘D&I’ training and managers and actually do bugger all beyond changing loos and inconveniencing a lot of people.

It really hacks me off that it’s trumpeted as a ‘safe space’ (as I saw on a shop poster at the weekend - safe from what/who?), when back in the day these companies would be the ones treating gay workers badly.

bandwagon-jumping numpties.

I agree, it's largely mindless 'ooh we're being nice'.

However as a lesbian I see that stamp of 'we are stating here our political affiilation to a group who are homophobic and believe in the subordination of females' and it chills me. As a gay female - yeah, they're stating that they not only exclude me but support a group that actively threatens me and wants my equality, access and sexuality removed. And they can stay away from me.

I wonder if they actively realise that it's a very exclusionary, scary kind of inclusion that they're signalling a commitment to?

This was my take away today. I actually didn't purchase a large item as I thought the very well known company was either virtue signalling at best or at worst they don't want my business as I'm the wrong sort of woman.

We are subscribed to a few YouTube channels of DC7's interest including the official Lego channel, which has been promoting a video about an intersex employee since yesterday.

It's notably out of step with the other content on the channel, not something I especially want popping up for DS to see apropos of nothing when he just wants to watch Lego builds (clutches pearls, etc, but he's 7 for feck's sake), and somewhat importantly doesn't even really adequately explain what intersex is - just someone waffling on about never feeling like they were a woman. It's part of a series not pitched at kids but revering The Community - apparently playing with Lego provides a 'safe space' (eyes roll out of head)

I hear you with Lego, I'm aware that someone quite high up at Lego is gay and it's quite core to his whole identity and as such they've produced a few gay sets and heavily get involved with Pride (I think I read London employees were quite strongly encouraged to get involved).

BootsAndRoots · 06/06/2022 23:31

Companies only put the rainbow colours out in countries where homosexuality is legal and have legal protections.

There's no bravery in calling for gay rights in countries with gay rights.

Fifa have just put out a statement celebrating Pride and talk about how the World Cup in Qatar will be the most inclusive and equal World Cup ever!

kolomo · 06/06/2022 23:34

I don't think it means anything. It's just like the poppy. It's just what one does.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 06/06/2022 23:34

I wonder how much it actually backfires. I mean, every time I see a multinational do this on social media, I quickly check their logos for the official accounts in other nations. When I see they haven't stood up for gay men and lesbians in the middle east, then that's their brand image tainted to me.

I'm sure I'm not the only one doing this.

And this is why I won't watch a single match.

The really sad thing is that it might even be true, because they'd set the bar so low.

Some fans from Wales are boycotting the Qatar World Cup finals:

There was a rainbow minifigures set (not just rainbow colours of course). It's weird given that LEGO usually steers well clear of anything remotely political.

This kind of thing in workplaces can be very problematic. A fellow I went to university with belongs to a quite orthodox religious community, and works in a law firm. Over the last few years they've put more and more pressure on everyone to be involved in things like walking with the company banner in the Priide parade. He doesn't want any kind of fuss or trouble but it's to the point he feels he will have to tell them to back off. It's a pressure cooker workplace at the best of times. He's planning to leave in the Autumn, I have wondered how their DEI people will square that one.

@Terfydactyl

I read it as, supporting Ukraine was the trendy thing to do but this has been kicked out in favour of pride.
Nobody still has BLM logos or We are Charlie Hebdo slogans.

WolverineBluey · 07/06/2022 08:26

A relief it's not just me with the Lego and interesting to hear pp's points. They are not political in any other way, so it stands out.

Something like their Pride set could be a general conversation starter with small DCs I suppose, but an unavoidable video called 'A-Z of Awesome - I is for intersex' is just not where I'd start discussing these issues with young DCs.

Intersex is really complicated as discussions on this board show, and as I said before it is not even explained very well in the video from an intersex person, which seemed more about someone happy they had found a label for themselves and a special flag.

MagpiePi · 07/06/2022 08:26

The company I work for has a rainbow logo for June and has booked or sponsored (or something) 50 places at this year's London pride march. I wonder if it is something they do to get Stonewall bonus points as I know they were SW champions but am not sure if they still are or are just keeping it quiet.

I might email HR and ask if they will be supporting any other charities or causes in this way.

Perhaps particularly those supporting diversity in the workplace - eg those helping people with various disabilities?

No need to throw out your Ukrainian flags when you can just be even more inclusive, like the Dublin Pride Festival is.

And yes, that's actually real. I swear, every year I joke I need to invest in flag companies and this year I'm actually starting to regret not actually doing so!

OMG, that flag!

There is something that is so, so weird about the proliferation of flags. I can't quite put my finger on it, but it reminds me of something.

My workplace now has a large string of all the flags in the window, including the intersex flag. I am so tempted to ell my boss that intersex people don't want to be part of the +++ groups.
