Friends of mine are attending the Show the Light Gets In philosophy festival at Hay on Wye they weekend. My friends report that Kathleen Stock's talk about her book, Material Girls, was packed out — so much so that people were standing in the side areas and listening from outside the marquee. In the Q+A section several people spoke out about their concerns about gender ideology. Two TRAs asked questions and Kathleen calmly and briefly dealt with them. She received prolonged applause at the end of the event. When my friends went to buy her book at the Waterstones stand, (they'd seen a large pile of them before the event) it had sold out.

Just saying.

Waves to @SkattieCat and @TheGreatATuin I'm at the Hay festival too and also had no idea Kathleen was speaking down the road. Sad to have missed her. I had been thinking it was disappointing that she (and Helen Joyce) weren't speaking at the main festival. Maybe because their books aren't new enough. Or maybe HTLGI is just braver?

@TheGreatATuin, I'm intrigued now - which speakers mentioned gender issues? I must have been at all the wrong talks

It was mentioned at the Rose Tremain talk I was at, but it went down a slightly different route. Rose wrote a novel in 1992 called scared country which is about a female to male transexual. At the time it was cutting edge as it was an issue that no-one else was writing about. She did quite a bit of research and she said that interesting the men transitioning to women were happy to talk to her, but the women transitioning to men more than often were not (interestingly, she used the correct sex words for the men and the women). She then went on to say that she couldn't possibly write this novel now, and if she presented it to her publishers they would try to persuade her away from it. The discussion then went down the "writing solely from your own experience/perspective versus imagining yourself in other's experience/perspectives" route rather than "cancel culture/sex v. gender" route.

Hope you all had a great time at the Hay Festival! It was wonderful to be back after 2 years away. I am not sure the HTLGI events are being recorded as unlike Hay, they didn't run a remote Festival during the Pandemic.

I've just received a file containing one of the recordings of Tatchell and Pickard and although I haven't been able to listen to more than a few minutes of it, I'm already bristling.

Tatchell was originally given the slot to talk. He invited Bobbi Pickard fairly late in the day, from what I understand. It seems to start with Tatchell bemoaning the fact that no GC feminist would come and debate with them. So let me put it out there: all the usual suspects — Helen Joyce, Julia Long, Stephanie Davies Arai, Julie Bindel, Maya Forstater, Allison Bailey, JK Rowling, Graham Linehan, Helen Staniland, Emma Hilton and all the hundreds of other fabulous women whose names have deserted me after a rather large Sunday lunch — were you invited and did you turn Peter Tatchell down? Women's Rights Network, Woman's Place, Transgender Trend, Sex Matters, Merched Cymru, LGB Alliance — were you asked to find someone to attend and debate with Tatchell?

He then complains that Kathleen Stock got a solo slot the previous day, as if that was unfair. So he's got exactly the same as Kathleen Stock and he's complaining about it.

He then goes on to say he's had death threats for what he's written and said and says that both sides of the debate and does a Trumpish 'both sides as bad as each other' number. And that's just the first three minutes.

Blimey - that Tatchell session sounds hard going. So he got offered a solo slot just like Kathleen Stock, invited a friend to share it with him, and then complains that she got a solo slot? WTAF?!
