This is not a unisex toilet, despite the weird sign.

Why have they taken the main door off?

These are not enclosed toilets, these breach the equality act.

I do rather like this tweet though.

OneOfThoseOldFashionedWomen · 01/06/2022 15:39

As do I

Might be an idea to let others know of your experience at Shelter Hall.

Here's another good one

OneOfThoseOldFashionedWomen · 01/06/2022 15:53

Maybe we should start using that as stickers unsuitable toilets.

@Talliah degrading is an excellent word for it.

Shelter Hall is a HUGE venue as well, it’s got over 100 tables so could have 400 - 500 people there at busy times. I have no idea how they’d go about sex segregating the loos now seeing as it was built like that (as opposed to other places which just change the signage)

Before I emailed EH I wanted to confirm whether or not they are classified as a public body, it appears they are not but I did find this very hand webpage which lists the public bodies the various ministerial departments work with. Now we know who we can ask for EAI if they decide not to offer single sex spaces and services.

FOJN · 01/06/2022 17:30

I've just emailed the Glinner link to EH Customer Care.

girasol · 01/06/2022 17:33

The Chief Executive of EH is [email protected].

What are NT saying? Sorry, I struggle to follow Twitter threads.

FOJN · 31/05/2022 16:26

Well technically they can provide mixed sex toilets but the EA gives them the legal right to provide single sex toilets so they have chosen to
de-prioritise the safety and dignity of women.

What is very heartening is the number of women on that thread highlighting the EA and asking questions about how this decision was made, who they consulted with and threatening to withdraw from membership if their legal right to single sex toilets isn't respected.

I would guess the main door has been removed because it's fairly obvious this mixed sex arrangement is a huge risk to women and girls so they've made the interior of the toilets open to public view.

mixed sex? or unisex? Are mixed sex loos lawful?

FOJN · 01/06/2022 18:01

*mixed sex? or unisex? Are mixed sex loos lawful?"

Mixed sex/ unisex is a distinction without a difference. Both mean males and females are using the same facilities and I prefer the clarity of mixed sex. I believe mixed sex toilets are lawful with some exceptions.

BootsAndRoots · 01/06/2022 19:39

All women hate unisex toilets, the majority of men hate them too.

DameHelena · 01/06/2022 21:56

Well, I ask because I thought I’d seen on here recently a definition of the two, and it seems to me an important distinction.

Mixed-sex is like this one being discussed: multiple lockable cubicles, either with floor-to-ceiling walls or partitions (and sometimes urinals) in a large room, with sinks and bins/sanitary bins in an open shared area; unisex is one lockable room, with loo, sink, bin/sanitary bin in it.

I think. I’m happy to be corrected.

bellac11 · 01/06/2022 22:01

I must admit we went to Walmer Castle recently and I think the toilets were mixed in fact they must have been because my OH used one and I used the other, only 2 in the block

One of those tweets that made me laugh out loud and simultaneously feel sad that this is a reality at the moment!

Sorry I misunderstood your question because these are obviously mixed sex. I agree with the distinction you make here.

HairyBum · 01/06/2022 23:13

Can you imagine sending your 11 year old to the loo independently? I would send mine to a single female sex loo but would have to accompany her inside a mixed sex loo, with my other children and baby in tow.

also the urine from men, on the loo seat, splattered on the floor and up the toilet lid, a revolting smell, it makes me feel sick and dirty

Voice0fReason · 01/06/2022 23:26

It's insane that organisations are even thinking that this is a good idea, let alone doing it.
I wouldn't set foot inside the place.

My real question is, when you say 'technically they can provide mixed sex toilets' is that the case? or can they technically provide unisex toilets?
I ask as I'd like to contact EH about this, but it's harder to argue against mixed-sex if it's lawful.

NecessaryScene · 02/06/2022 07:45

Well, do they even have to provide anything? A hole in the ground outside next to the rose bushes might well be lawful, right?

I know there are specific rules about schools and workplaces, but for visitor attractions?

OneOfThoseOldFashionedWomen · 02/06/2022 08:13

Is a mixed sex toilet completely enclosed? In Prezzo restaurant chain they have them like this, everything inside a floor to ceiling lockable room.

This is no enclosed cubicles, (you can look under and over) and no door, people in the corridor can hear/see/smell you. It is wrong on all levels.

Also what have they done to the mens, do they still have urinals?
