Green Party London meeting tonight; man abuses woman saying "shut up you stupid cow"

Whilst she was talking of her female experience of domestic violence.
Like a Private Eye cartoon but in voice.
The session was recorded so we will be pressuring Sian Berry and Caroline Russell to release it, and the man must absolutely be expelled.

This is not on, I am enraged. I love my Party but this bullying and hate that it directs towards women needs to be called out.

Shock
LizzieSiddal · 23/05/2022 22:34

Well we should all be surprised but I’m not. Some men hate women and don’t mind telling the world. I expect he will get away with it.

What's a trans identified male?

ItsAnOvaryAction · 23/05/2022 23:12

Unless he is publicly named and expelled from the party then not only has he absolutely got away with it, but he has done so with the blessing of the Green Party.

I hope they do release the video or sound recording.

StillWeRise · 23/05/2022 23:31

appalling

FlibbertyGiblets · 23/05/2022 23:34

The planet is burning and men are more energised about shutting down women, same old, same old.

MimbleCat · 23/05/2022 23:41

Shahrar Ali has posted on Twitter

They'll have to. Heard also on the grapevine that a couple of people recorded the whole thing for accessibly reasons ( I think using a voice to text app because Sian Berry was speaking too fast for the hard of hearing even though she smugly said she was trying to speak slowly). (She always speaks very fast and rubs her nose a lot at meetings)

@Nordensost If there was a mike on the person who interrupted or said something sotto voce and recordings made then they should be released. Including what the speaker was saying at the time she was interrupted. Were you there in person?

I admire all those women, and male allies, who persevere despite abuse and intimidation from the transactivists. Thank you for staying strong.

Green Parties all over the world appear to be astonishingly sexist. It's an odd match for being green, I would have thought. But then I also used to think that they young are less sexist than older people which doesn't seem to be true.

WarriorN · 24/05/2022 06:09

Not the deep green resistance. They liken abuse of the plant to dv/ misogyny and call it out.

WarriorN · 24/05/2022 06:17

Berry is crowing about beating transphobia.

334bu · 24/05/2022 07:41

Be kind seems very one sided?

ChopinBoard · 24/05/2022 08:05

We have a climate emergency and a cost of living crisis meanwhile the Green Party...

What was the motion, does anyone know? On the Twitter thread someone said there was a motion (I assume pro gender identity theory) that passed after and the man in question was allowed to vote.

I’ve known a lot of green/eco-warrior/hippy/lentil-weaver types and it’s always struck me that they tend to have very traditional family set-ups where the woman does all the childcare and is often sidelined financially - sometimes related to a kind of earth mother / attachment parenting concept where she must always be available for her kids, does extended BF, etc. I’m not judging those choices in themselves but they can tend to conflict with feminism in some situations, and attract men who want to be dominant and to excuse themselves from anything domestic while they go off and save the world.

Some of the worst sexists and misogynists IME are lefty, do-gooder type men, and when you combine that with gender ideology that says men can also BE women and be superior to actual women, and that that makes them stunning and brave, I can see how some very toxic types leap aboard. And they’re surrounded by young, idealistic “be kind”-indoctrinated women who will raise them up.

All I have seen so far from the GP is much triumphant posting about how they've saved LGBTQI+ rights.

Nobody has mentioned the abuse. No calling out, no decrying it. I expect they won't ever even acknowledge it, because it seems there is a deeply rooted strand of misogyny in the GP that genuinely thinks a woman being abused is fair game if she doesn't do as she's told.

Artichokeleaves · 24/05/2022 09:13

Gosh. Getting ever hard to cover eyes and shout lalala and go on denying that this is a movement that valorises and legitimises really foul misogyny isn't it?

When 'beating transphobia' as that quote demonstrates, in fact equates with 'celebrating the abuse and prejudice against females', then we've reached the end of the road on what 'transphobia' is being used to mean and what its providing a fig leaf for.

Artichokeleaves · 24/05/2022 09:15

All aided of course by the two really starkly misogynist men who have been exposed during the AB court case. Came for the diversity, stayed for the misogyny.

Having just read Shahrar's thread again, Caroline Russell called out the abuse at the meeting, for which, thank you.

There should still be a consequence - people are not supposed to be so callous/abusive to other members, even if they disagree with them. To have told a woman apparently recounting her history of abuse to 'shut up you stupid cow' is utterly abhorrent.

MagnoliaTaint · 24/05/2022 09:28

Calls for Shahrar Ali and others to be expelled from the party, using the slur T*s.

This is what that nice pastel rainbow coloured motion was really about, I expect.

I'm not generally one for saying that if it had been a trans person on the receiving end of this remark the response might have been different but...
