Nicola Sturgeon meeting with right wing anti-abortion Republican congressman

Looks like Sturgeon went on a jolly to the US lately (um, why? foreign policy is reserved to Westminster) and met a right wing Republican who campaigns to repeal abortion (and backed a lawsuit contesting President Biden’s election win over Donald Trump).

And yet her govt says gender critical women are the ones with the backing of right wing American evangelicals.

Sure thing, Nicola.

I agree the irony is quite something and I'm no fan of the woman, but I'm not keen on the suggestion that she mustn't talk or appear in a photograph with someone she disagrees with on one issue (or more than one issue). In general, bipartisanship and talking to each other as human beings is to be encouraged in my book. It's not as if she joined him at a pro-life rally, is it? She was there on other business, and has a clear and firm position on abortion rights.

Lovelyricepudding · 23/05/2022 14:53

I am sure the army of concernedfriends etc will be along any second to condemn Nicolas Sturgeon and anyone who now listens to her. She must be right wing and anti abortion now.

dropthevipers · 23/05/2022 14:57

Who cares? Third rate gobshite gets her face in the papers, lining up the next gig after indyref2 goes tits up.

MagnoliaTaint · 23/05/2022 16:13

Feminist to her fingertips.

MagnoliaTaint · 23/05/2022 16:20

'During the March for Life in Washington on January 22, 2010, Aderholt said, "The issue of abortion and the sanctity of life is something that I feel strongly about and I encourage my colleagues to look for ways to curb and stop abortions in the United States, while compassionately educating on this important issue.
...
Aderholt opposes same-sex marriage
...
Aderholt supports gun rights. He was endorsed by the National Rifle Association in the 2010 general election,[28] and received $2,000 from it.'

From his wiki.

I see Angus Robertson met with him last month, too.

This all seems quite odd, to me.

luciatrope · 23/05/2022 18:47

I agree, this does seem bizarre. Especially with the recent controversial addition of anti-abortion campaigners outside a hospital in Glasgow. Not a good look at all.

ResisterRex · 23/05/2022 19:24

opposes same-sex marriage

How does he feel about same-gender marriage though? 🤔

MagnoliaTaint · 23/05/2022 22:00

The point is, Wallaw, that many people we discuss here have been roundly derided, and even 'cancelled' for similarly 'standing next to someone while a photo is taken' or 'talking to someone with whom the Right Side of History disagrees'.

People are constantly saying feminists are 'in bed with the Xtian Right', etc, on the basis of precisely fuck all evidence, and here is Nicola Sturgeon and the potential next First Minister smiling for a photo opp with someone who is actively working to remove US womens' rights to abortion.

maddy68 · 24/05/2022 07:18

Od course politicians should talk to those with opposing views. How do you think change happens ?

MagnoliaTaint · 24/05/2022 08:22

What 'change' do you think Nicola Sturgeon is proposing? Is she going to single-handedly uphold Roe V Wade? Or is it more likely her pal will pressure her to not introduce buffer zones around Scottish abortion clinics, despite many organisations having been asking for her to take action for months?

I can't stand Nicola Sturgeon. Sturgeon is the gift that keeps on giving. She hit a record new low recently trying to argue that the war in Ukraine bolsters the case for separatism. She is a truly vile individual.

Sturgeon is First Minister. What on earth is she doing swanning around internationally? She has no remit or political power internationally. This was supposedly to discuss “Scotland’s core values”.

What on earth relevance do "Scotland's core values" (whatever they might be) have to do with Alabama and a Republican, Trump supporting member of Congress in Alabama? As he co-chairs the "Friends of Scotland caucus' I can only assume this was an SNP fund raiser tapping into deluded Americans who think they are Scottish.

Sturgeon is irrelevant on the international scene. This was , I'm sure, to drum up donations from deluded Americans who so love their Scottish roots.

MagnoliaTaint · 24/05/2022 09:40

Ah. Fundraising. Alle ist klaar.

BlackForestCake · 24/05/2022 23:13

Especially since the SNP is skint and donations from Scots are drying up.

Oh dear, what a pity, never mind.
