School assembly told kids that Maya was fired for transphobic hate speech among other stuff: response…

I am raging atm.

My 13 year old DD (feminist AF: has suffragette coloured braces) has come home and told me they had an assembly today about their new inclusivity policy. As part of the assembly they had headlines flashed up about people fired for hate speech and Maya was up there.

They were told that gender identity is a protected characteristic under the Equality Act; they were given the accurate quote but told that gender identity is ‘the modern term’ for gender reassignment.

She will write me a list of all the points she can remember when she has finished her homework apparently (!)

Firstly I will get a copy of the presentation from school.

Can someone remind me where Maya is with her case? I know the original ET decision was overturned. Are we waiting for another judgement?

Holding a belief is one thing, but how one expresses it (and if one's workplace is an appropriate setting to be expressing it) is another.

So what way of expressing that belief would be unacceptable to you? Eg how would evaluate the phrase

“the earth is round. Men are biologically different to women and the equality act protects sex as a specific characteristic not gender. “

both statements are true and can be stated anywhere - the workplace, the pub etc

Ereshkigalangcleg · 10/05/2022 08:10

hear this a lot and I think it's misunderstood. This just means MF is able to believe anything she wants. It's like saying it's a protected belief to think planet Earth is flat, it doesn't mean you're correct.

We can all believe anything we want and always have been able to, just like you can believe in gender identity ideology. However the relevance here is that we cannot be discriminated against simply for expressing it. This is not only applied to Maya, it's a binding ruling. The circumstances of any given case are relevant to determine whether two sets of protected rights conflict and who if anyone has suffered a detriment, for instance the rights of people to hold religious beliefs that homosexuality is wrong and the rights of LGB people to not have a hostile working environment. Harassment of people on the grounds of a protected characteristic is unlawful. This could be in either direction to either or both parties, depending on circumstances.

That applies to everyone, not just gender critical feminists.

Like holding a belief in gender identity? And whether it is appropriate to be requesting non sexed based pronouns, or someone like Phillip/Pips Bunce performing femininity once a week, you mean?

"both statements are true and can be stated anywhere - the workplace, the pub etc"

Pub is fine as long as you are keeping the conversation to your own table and not bothering other people who don't want to be bothered.

As for the workplace... shouldn't employees be focused on working?

Ereshkigalangcleg · 10/05/2022 08:13

Yes, all members of the workplace should be focussed on working. No argument there.

I've sent you a link to a bbc article about the appeal. Why don't you read it instead of making up scenarios in your head?

Alexa - show me how to derail a thread.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 10/05/2022 08:16

It's quite clear from this thread and others that understanding Equality law is not Margarita's strong suit.

Maybe Margarita was delivering the presentation at the school? Grin

Clymene · 10/05/2022 08:17

Indeed! I very much hope that the OP and Maya are in touch. She's exactly the kind of role model schoolgirls need

Ereshkigalangcleg · 10/05/2022 08:18

She is. She's such an impressive campaigner.

Is 'gr00mer' on the no-fly list?

The ability to read is one skill but the ability to comprehend it is another, as MP has demonstrated many times during a lack of meaningful engagement.

I hope that Maya is invited to speak at the school assembly in the future. She's an excellent role model for young women.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 10/05/2022 09:02

Is 'gr00mer' on the no-fly list?

Selectively, I think so. If reported.

Yep! So the whole "Tell us all your pronouns" crap whould never have reached the workplace either.

Odd how you can only see it when a woman says "Fuck off, sex is immutable!"

Clangyleg · 10/05/2022 10:11

Many of us are bothered by the ideology being pushed in our direction , but I don’t notice that men are holding back. Go Maya and the OP and her daughter!

Magenta82 · 10/05/2022 13:48

Good luck with this OP, I hope the school are open to criticism and feedback.
