Gender neutral toilet facility

cakesandchocolate · 05/05/2022 14:24

University medical school has both male and female toilet facilities on each floor.
One has been relabelled as gender neutral, thus reducing single sex toilet availability to one sex.

Which toilet facility was relabelled? And why?

(I have no issue with the existence of gender neutral facilities being available, that makes no difference to the question)

I assume its the women's facilities that have been opened up to all and sundry!

Glenthebattleostrich · 05/05/2022 14:29

It's usually the women's toilets that are changed.

And I now refuse to use gender neutral, I prefer the honest mixed sex!

gamerchick · 05/05/2022 14:29

It's lazy. Gender neutral toilets are self contained spaces, wall to ceiling. They can't just clag a label on one of the existing ones to change it. Our work is GN, specifically built like that, with sink and no gaps under door. They need to spend the money if they want to go down that road personally.

cakesandchocolate · 05/05/2022 14:47

Tbf the label is ‘all gender’
but yes, it’s the women’s.
it seems a small thing but why is it always the women’s facilities that are reduced?

This is unacceptable direct discrimination.

And it is the words 'woman', 'girl,' and 'female' which are erased, not the words 'man', 'boy,' and 'male.'

The whole ideology is sexist and, in my view, misogynistic. The body to be erased everywhere but in porn is the female body, probably because it is hated by one group of transitioners (who have it) and by the other group of transitioners, too (who don't have it).

ChopinBoard · 05/05/2022 16:35

As a pp said this is direct discrimination - men now have double the provision women have. Hopefully some clever viper will be along with links to legislation and or template letter

DomesticatedZombie · 05/05/2022 17:23

Health and Safety is pretty matter-of-fact about how many toilets are needed according to sex.

  • and as you can see - it's a requirement to have more toilets for females than for males.
SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 05/05/2022 17:30

And the set up should be different as, effectively, they are now mixed sex. Requiring floor to ceiling cubicles and hand wash basins inside each one.

Lots of information on how to explain why you are complaining on another thread. I'm on my phone and haven't a hope of finding it, but it's not that old.

Peregrina · 05/05/2022 17:34

So where do they expect female Muslim students to go to the toilet?

If they now have toilets labelled 'male' and toilets labelled 'all gender', then surely by not providing toilets labelled 'female' they are guilty of sex discrimination? Has this been queried with the medical school?

Crazylazydayz · 05/05/2022 17:43

This is direct sex discrimination as males have ? x single sex toilets and women have 0. If the building has 4 floors it would be fair to make 2 x mens and 2 x womens gender neutral; that way each sex has a sex specific toilet no more than one floor away.

I would start by pointing out that under EA 2010 sex is a protected characteristic, and ask to see the equality impact assessment for removing all female sex specific toilets whilst retaining all male sex specific toilets.

Then point out that legally single sex spaces are permitted where it preserves the dignity of one sex. Ask the question why is the preservation of males dignity being respected but not women’s.

As pp state, look at other threads and you will find links to templates on toilet provisions.

Personally I would consider printing “All Genders” labels and sticking them on the mens toilets and then deliberately start using the mens to make a point. Men using the urinals will not be happy.

Artichokeleaves · 05/05/2022 18:35

Direct action we all need to start taking: go to the front desk and ask to be shown to the single sex female only toilets as mixed sex are inaccessible for you.

Requiring you to disclose deeply personal information (and to whom? To be recorded where? What training does the person have to be demanding this and suggesting that they are the person to deal with it? What training do they have to pick up the pieces if this is deeply distressing information you're being demanded to get out in public on the spot in casual conversation with a stranger?) is obviously right out.

You could be:

of a minority faith or culture
having a protected belief
disabled
neurodiverse
A survivor of CSA/trauma/DA/DV
Just plain wanting privacy and dignity

it's not for them to demand this information. If you cannot have access to an accessible toilet then you let them know:

a) where off site do I go to be able to go to the loo please?
b) how long will that take? What time allowances are built in for women so disadvantaged compared to women able to use mixed sex spaces?
c) can I have your complaints process and equalities/accessibility policy please since this is pretty obvious discrimination if not active disadvantage/punishment to women unable to comply with a proscribed political decision by the building owners.

So long as there are women being punished and excluded in this way so that male people can have everything they want all the time and fuck anyone else, I will be doing this. Particularly as I'm lucky enough to be confident enough and articulate enough to do it, and I have a responsibility to speak when many of the women most affected will be unable to do anything but quietly bow down and get out of the way of these male people.

Artichokeleaves · 05/05/2022 18:38

And unless we start logging complaints and creating numbers of women saying no and stating they cannot do this, the argument will be used that 'well no one has a problem'.

Which reminds me: log everything. Keep copies of everything. Circulate it to your MP and anyone else you can think of, including the local papers. Because the MO is often to feed complaints and papertrails to the Welsh Parliament Equality Impact Assessment Eating Dog, and swear they never existed, because the evidence is bloody inconvenient.

MumofCrohnie · 05/05/2022 18:41

This makes me mad. My daughter has Crohn's disease. In a flare she can have little warning to get to a toilet. She then has watery diarrhea which is both loud and extremely unpleasant smelling. This is already mortifying to her. Similarly, using the disabled loo when she "looks" ok is embarrassing and invites comment. I genuinely think that a mixed sex toilet would be a complete barrier to her continuing her studies in this sort of situation. The potential for humiliation would be too much.

cakesandchocolate · 05/05/2022 18:41

There are 2floors
ground floor has single sex male and female, second floor has single sex male and all gender
so there is access to female only But now fewer.
lets say there are 10 toilets in each facility (not sure of exact no) then men have access to 30 (or 20 if they prefer single sex.)
women have access to 20 (10 if they prefer single sex)

Definitely sex discrimination unless one of the male toilets is also be made All Gender. This would then provide one female, one male and two all gender toilets in the building.

fecklessfanny · 05/05/2022 19:31

Why is it always womens loos that are converted to gender neutral?
Obviously it's because the whole world understands the problem "male violence" and the need to "validate the male"

It grossly over looks faith, trauma, biology and dignity and the sheer fact that as a female toilet trips can take much linger
We've all seen the epic line outside the ladies while the men breeze in and out.
On critical thinking alone in that score if any loo should be converted into gender neutral it should be then mens-then they would t need to install urinals as they'd already be there

nepeta · 05/05/2022 21:06

Why is it always womens loos that are converted to gender neutral?

I have been told that it's because the men's loo has urinals. But that is no excuse at all! We have been told that everyone is very happy to use gender-neutral toilets and women can just walk past the men using the urinals. /sarcasm/

But the existence of urinals in itself is because of biological sex differences. Men can pee standing up more easily than women. So strictly speaking gender identity ideologists should work very hard to remove all urinals from men's toilets.

The real reason is that the female sex is supposed to be the acquiescing sex.
