Things really don't seem to be going well for Disney 😁

This bit made me chuckle “He understands that 21st-century America is not about life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. It’s about crushing your enemies and hearing the lamentations of their trans women.”

Interesting read. Moral of the story: don’t bring a knife to a gunfight.

I'd welcome a law prohibiting telling lies to young school children (such as there are over 100 genders and some girls grow up to be men) in the UK.
And a tax loophole closure for big corp too!

The whole irony of calling the laws provoked by the pushing of gender ideology on kids "don't say gay" is that America's arts and media 'liberal-left' haven't been 'saying gay' for years. Instead, it's 'LGBTQ+' or 'queer'. Watch recent US TV series - here's a lesbian character, a woman, played by a woman, who dresses and presents as a woman, only she's never called a lesbian, she's called 'queer', and the actress discussing her in interviews will call her 'queer' or maybe 'gay' but never 'lesbian'. Because lesbian means same-sex attracted and that means she has boundaries that the word 'queer' does not allow. In the current USA usage, to 'queer' is to demolish boundaries. It's the 'blurred lines' word, inherently homophobic.

IvyTwines · 29/04/2022 08:54

Even the British BBC reporter covering the Oscar ceremony for the BBC One TV news described a lesbian winner as 'queer'.

zafferana · 29/04/2022 08:58

There was a piece on BBC World Service's Business Daily starting at 8.33am today about this - really interesting.

US politics are just awful. The worst marries itself to the best on both sides. Sensible people want to safeguard children. Sensible people want people to live free from unnecessary discrimination and prejudice. Sensible people believe in freedom of expression. Sensible people believe in some limits on freedom of expression.

This is how you end up with people shouting, 'Those evil bastards want to stop us showing children porn!' and 'Those evil bastards believe women should have bodily autonomy!'

Ron DeSantis is fab, he's done a lot for women's sport and it's great to see a politician standing side by side with women to fight for their rights.

We need the male poiticians over here to take a leaf out of his book.

I bet you also love his recent gerrymander aimed at disenfranchising black voters in Florida. Is that 'fab' too?

He's passed this Disney legislation in anger in order to throw some meat to his base. I'm no fan of Disney but anyone who thinks they're going to be somehow 'beaten' by this is beyond naive.

As with everything with the TRA lobby, facts are embellished, claims about being wiped from existence are made.

It's not a "don't say gay" bill, it's an age appropriate sex education bill. It's about how you frame it, the equivalent is the Family Sex Show, which because LGBT lobbying groups didn't get the first opportunity to frame the argument was rightly seen as having material completely unsuitable for children. If the lobby groups got in first, then the argument would be about "bigots trying to ban a play teaching children about equality and preventing people from acknowledging LGBT people".

tabbycatstripy · 30/04/2022 10:47

Boots

I agree. By all means say gay. I don’t care about small children being taught that some people are gay. I care about them being taught about anal sex and fisting, and that being defended on the basis of being anti ‘censorship’. Age appropriate teaching might be censorship of inappropriate materials, but I’m okay with that.

Same here, I understand that some people are gay and I'm ok with that as long as they keep it in the bedroom.

I've no interest in hearing about their sex life and it certainly has no place in the classroom.

IvyTwines · 30/04/2022 12:06

I wouldn't celebrate a right winger, not even on the 'stopped clock' principle. What is so crushingly dispiriting is that an ideology that has reintroduced the sort of regressive conservative, misogynistic, homophobic stereotypes we hoped we'd seen the back of, and then actually reaches into schools to teach children that they should carve those stereotypes into their own bodies, enriching big business in the process, has become the leading political cause of the 21st century so-called 'Left' . It is so utterly, utterly fucked up.
