This was in the Telegraph:

www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2022/04/23/feminists-turning-tories-labour-making-idiots-womens-issues/

But has also been picked up by the Mail:

it's my vote to do as I choose.

Exactly.
I understand why some people choose to spoil their ballot.
I understand why some people will vote conservative or labour. I understand the issues with each view and have listened and arrived at what I believe is the best course of action for me. Others may choose differently, but I would like them to base it on facts and measurable outcomes not just party pr.

The bullying of identity politics and the unwillingness to try to understand the motivations and thought process behind others' actions is responsible, in no small part, for the mess we are in.

Another reminder: Ruth Serwotka, co-founder of A Woman's Place UK and a woman with an impeccable left wing pedigree, left the Labour Party]] after Lisa Nandy refused to say that WPUK were not a hate group.

(If this link doesn't work it's from The Guardian, 06/04/2022)

Please don't try telling us Labour doesn't know.

TheBiologyStupid · 27/04/2022 18:34

The link works, @Floisme. Sadly, Labour's policy-making process doesn't...

Floisme · 27/04/2022 19:42

Thanks TheBiologyStupid.
Pretty much all the Labour Party had to do to keep me and other women like me on board was acknowledge that a conflict of rights exists.

I listened to this recently. Great interview and thanks for the share. Very interestingly at the end, Matt is teasing Rosie about going for leadership one day. She is adamant that she won't and states her support for Jess or Lisa - I can only assume Phillips or Nandy. I know Lisa has very publicly stated TWAW. I wonder about interesting conversations behind the scenes. I'm still not voting Labour. Holding my nose and voting Tory this time round first in my life which is many decades long.

She was talking about the last election wasn't she? Matt asks almost every guest if they're going for leadership some day, though. I think he just wants to be able to say, "you heard it here first!".

But yeah, there will definitely be more GC Labour MPs behind the scenes. Let's hope they grow some ovaries soon.

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 28/04/2022 03:30

I'd just like to go on record as having sent — multiple! — letters to Labour's national headquarters and to Keir Starmer. Actual letters, on paper, in stamped [1], addressed envelopes. I nearly went so far as to write SWALK [2] on the back.

[1] Stamps are expensive, you know!

I take it you're being facetious, a man can watch pornography and still respect women and girl's rights

How does that work then?

5zeds · 28/04/2022 09:18

Nobody can watch pornography and think they are respecting anyone

Yup.
Before someone trots out some lib fem trope about choice and empowerment think really hard about whether watching porn affects women (and men) in real life. Not the choice of actors or models to do that work. But the women and young women in relationships with porn addled men who have some very odd ideas about sex and relationships. About the attitude it creates that sex and bodies are commodities to be bought and sold. Then if you still think you can consume porn in a bubble and not find it alters your views and attitudes we might still have to agree to disagree.

What concerns me most about the Conservatives highjacking this cause to reframe themselves as “pro-women” is the strong possibility that an enraged electorate will hammer them at the May elections.

We will then, no doubt, be told how the electorate doesn’t agree with us - see how they voted!

Scorchedterf · 28/04/2022 14:21

It’s a shame the Labour Party won’t participate in hijacking women’s rights as a cause that might get them more votes.
It would be great if the Labour Party shamelessly courted women’s votes by defending the rights of 51% of the electorate.

Floisme · 28/04/2022 14:44

The Conservatives are doing what politicians have done since the dawn of time: they have seen a weak spot in the opposition and they are problng. That's how it works and, as far as I'm concerned, the Labour Party could end this any time they wanted by stating that they have no intention of messing with the single sex exceptions outlined in the Equality Act.

All I am asking of them is to come out in support of current legislation. It really is quite embarrassing how low my expectations are.

Tanith · 28/04/2022 20:19

It would be even more impressive if the Conservatives - the party that is currently in Government and has been for the last 13 years - would take some constructive action to support women's rights instead of making wishy washy statements and hoping it'll fool us into thinking they're the party for women.

They could start with a reduction in the rapes and murder of women and increased prosecution for the perpetrators. You know: the absolute basics of a decent society.

Floisme · 28/04/2022 20:31

The Conservatives, as I have already said, are not my party. I don't vote for them and the only reason I'm interested in what they have to say about women's rights is that it puts more pressure on the Labour Party - a pressure that's entirely deserved.

nepeta · 28/04/2022 20:31

They could start with a reduction in the rapes and murder of women and increased prosecution for the perpetrators. You know: the absolute basics of a decent society.

Are there strong social justice movements pushing for this? I mean equally strong as, say, trans activism? My impression is that those pointing out the problems which are happening right now are solitary researchers or have very small organisations backing them, but I will be happy to be proved wrong.

Still those fighting against, say, what they call carceral feminism don't appear to promote other ways of combating the problem.

nepeta · 28/04/2022 20:33

To clarify, politicians apply oil only to the squeaking wheels, so wheels must squeak first.

MangyInseam · 28/04/2022 22:34

"Hijacked" implies someone else took ownership of this issue before.

This is also a problem outside the UK, under all sorts of different types of governments. I am not sure Labour or the Conservatives have any realistic ideas about how they might approach it.

ResisterRex · 29/04/2022 07:25

The same "goodness me!!" line seems to have been used in this denial, which they've now backtracked on:

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10764985/We-mistake-Angela-present-Labour-U-turn-Mail-proves-Rayner-beergate.html

"Goodness me. With everything that's going on. It's an old story!"

Is their plan to express surprise at everything they must know they have to engage with? If so then the papers will be filled with Labour-Butterworth gasps in the runup to the general election.

I'm still hoping for a montage...
