Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

The US has its own Kathleen Stock - Dr Buckley deplatformed by Harvard

DomesticatedZombie · 22/04/2022 10:06

It's interesting to see this all start to play out in the US.

Dr Devin Buckley is a feminist and board member of WoLF (women's liberation front, a feminist organisation). She had been invited to talk on the subject of Romanticism at Harvard, but was disinvited after someone read about her feminist views.

It's worth reading these letters to recognise 1. the abject and craven behaviour of the (unnamed) person from Harvard and those who decided to 'cancel' Dr Buckley and 2. Her clear-sighted, eloquent and honest response.

Dr Buckley is a wordsmith indeed. But I wish this crazy cult was not described as far left all the time. Perhaps that's how it looks from the USA , where some dripping wet centrist like Layla Moran might be seen as a commie. Astonishing that Harvard of all places cannot stand against this censorship. As Dr Buckley says , will they now purge their library of all books deemed offensive?

Redshoeblueshoe · 22/04/2022 10:21

Thanks for posting. That was an excellent read.

DomesticatedZombie · 22/04/2022 10:46

I don't know enough about US politics to comment on the left/far left positioning of any of this.

That paragraph was excellent:

''If it is unacceptable for me to speak at Harvard on British poetry and philosophy because I am a feminist, then I invite Harvard to purge its libraries and museums of all those who hold views unacceptable to Harvard. If I am to be silenced, then why do the tomes and treatises of history’s innumerable sexist, racist, homophobes still sit on Harvard’s hallowed shelves and continue to be cited with reverence? Harvard should cleanse them all and leave nothing but the purity of empty space'

I also like this, although I have to say this woman is making me feel quite inadequate even from the other side of the Atlantic:

'I shouldn’t have to mention here that I have a degree in biology (neuroscience to be exact) but I will anyway just to drive the point home. Not only do I have a degree, but I attained highest honors in that degree and a record of straight A’s from cell biology through computational neuroscience, to say nothing of the fact that I studied human and animal genetics at Stuyvesant High School of Math and Science while working part-time in a microbiology lab at Columbia University. I am confident about my definition of a woman–an adult human female.'

Fantastic, articulate intelligent woman.
Such a pleasure to read in contrast to fake facts, flat earthism along with a dose of bullying and threats uttered by so many misogynists pushing this very special ideology.

DomesticatedZombie · 22/04/2022 11:15

Sometimes it does seem to be such an uneven match, doesn't it? I wonder if all the enthusiasm for groupthink and mass censure sometimes stems from sheer inadequacy and jealousy?

Fantastic reply. Love the last paragraph. Love the fact she is a biologist and an English Lit expert. True intellectual.

tabbycatstripy · 22/04/2022 11:26

She is so much smarter than the people she is speaking to, isn’t she?

DomesticatedZombie · 22/04/2022 11:52

Yep!

Here are some more essays/posts by Dr Buckley:

You can sign the petition to Harvard on the linked site.

I am trying to understand if this de-platforming was commanded from above, by the students, or if it was simply a form of internalising the obey-the-faux-woke demands by the people doing the canceling.

littlbrowndog · 22/04/2022 17:03

Wow. What great stuff she writes. Someone to admire

empty spaces. ✊💪

and it’s not word salad eithr

BettyFilous · 22/04/2022 18:49

I watched the video linked above. Dr Buckley is so impressive. She and Kathleen made a fantastic double act.

3timeslucky · 22/04/2022 19:25

She's dynamite both in her delivery and the points she's making. I hope they squirmed reading her reply. Though how they could write what they did without embarrassment is beyond me: the issue is not her scholarship, the issue is not anything about which she would be speaking. The issue are other beliefs and values that she holds and (even worse) that she has made known that she holds these beliefs and values dear.

RogersOrganismicProcess · 23/04/2022 04:06

Such an impressive woman. I’d love to invite her for tea.

PaleBlueMoonlight · 23/04/2022 07:41

She writes so well. Not surprising, but nonetheless impressive.

FrancescaContini · 23/04/2022 09:18

“Purity of empty space” - fabulous.

What a wonderful role model for our young people, especially for girls who want to pursue careers in STEM subjects.

Thank you for posting these links 🌷

What a fantastic reply. I think that's what you might call a 'mic drop'

I often come here after reading trans activists making their arguments and the difference is startling. You ladies are extremely knowledgeable and razor-sharp which is wonderfully relaxing. If the foot soldiers are this good on our side, the generals must be truly awesome. (Though some of you are probably generals, too).

DomesticatedZombie · 23/04/2022 22:29

General Chaos? General Bafflement? General PeriMenopausalFury.

DomesticatedZombie, hahaaa.

NoraEphronsNeck · 24/04/2022 11:14

I've found one of the only positives of all this nonsense is that I've become aware of some truly impressive women and now I can add Dr Buckley to that list.

TheABC · 24/04/2022 11:27

That response was eloquent and amazing to read. It's such a relief after the word salad the TRA's come up with.

PandoraRegretsNothing · 29/04/2022 05:43

Dr. Buckley gives an AMAZING webinar in response to Harvard too! Her logic in tearing down their arguments is sharp and her rhetoric is shimmering! Plus she reads from more emails:
