The Committee will consider the EHRC's stance regarding the Government's 2018 consultation, more recent reforms in Scotland, and its approach to LGBTQ+ issues more widely.
The session will also scrutinise the EHRC's new three-year plan and its work following the Government’s Inclusive Britain report.

This will be interesting.

Thanks for the link, should be an interesting session.

I have little understanding of this process- is it much risk that they get told off for having changed angle back to considering all peoples rights instead of just certain very special ones?

MrsOvertonsWindow · 19/04/2022 16:01

Ooooh - Maria Miller will be in her best "disapproving colonial madam" mode again. It was quite an eye opener seeing that last time.

@timeisnotaline

Absolutely. Much of this mess has come from Miller's ignoring of all the other protected groups around the GRA while focusing on some very "special" people. Of course, subsequent exposure demonstrated that a number of them were very special for reasons that would normally involve police involvement.
Abitofalark · 19/04/2022 16:20

Thanks for alerting us. I wouldn't want to miss it. It will be the three top people from the EHRC in oral evidence, so should be interesting.

It would be nice if whoever compiled that notice could get the name of The Equality and Human Rights Commission right.

Lovelyricepudding · 19/04/2022 16:24

I wonder if they will be accorded due respect or referred to as Kishwer, Marcial and Melanie throughout?

DomesticatedZombie · 19/04/2022 16:24

Oooh. Watching.

Artichokeleaves · 19/04/2022 16:44

One hopes the EHRC is able to remind Miller and co that there are 9 protected characteristics, not one; they are not a hierarchy with TQ+ as the trump card; and that inclusion and diversity does not exclusively mean the loud political faction of the TQ+ lobby.

VestofAbsurdity · 19/04/2022 16:48

One does hope Artichokeleaves but one is probably hoping in vain.

I wonder if they will be accorded due respect or referred to as Kishwer, Marcial and Melanie throughout?

Nah, respect is only for those extra special people of the sacred caste.

You'd hope. A lot of my work used to involve telling people there are nine characteristics, and you can't pick and choose which ones you choose to pay attention to in your EDI policy. The ones that almost never made an appearance were age and pregnancy/maternity. Disability also rarely made an appearance once you were past the interview stage.

Maria Miller left some time ago. Are you thinking of Caroline Nokes? She will have to deal with Jackie Doyle-Price, who is a GC Conservative.
MrsOvertonsWindow · 19/04/2022 19:58

Damn! Yes - it was Caroline Nokes who performed as the "colonial lady" last time . Thank you Pluvia . Blush

TheBiologyStupid · 19/04/2022 21:40

Should be interesting. I hope that Kishwer Falkner is on better form than she was on Woman's Hour a couple of weeks ago.

tabbycatstripy · 19/04/2022 21:44

The first time I watched one of these sessions my jaw was on the floor. They were so rude, and so obviously partisan.

Yes. I was hoping Akua Reindorf would be speaking. The Baroness hasn't sounded very confident when I've heard her on the radio — a couple of times now.

The appearances before the Women and Equalities Committee last year by various individuals prior to their latest report were jaw dropping in highlighting the different treatment meted out. The bias towards the sacred caste was so fecking obvious, the disrespect, rudeness and aggressiveness to those not in the sacred caste and the fawning, bowing and scraping to those that were was certainly an education.
tabbycatstripy · 19/04/2022 22:24

VestofAbsurdity

I was shouting at the screen. Just the insolent attitude they were willing to display towards people who were there in good faith (whatever their opinions) put me off them. I would listen to (virtually) anyone speaking their honest view with better manners than that.

tabbycatstripy · 19/04/2022 22:26

‘I was hoping Akua Reindorf would be speaking. The Baroness hasn't sounded very confident when I've heard her on the radio — a couple of times now.’

She doesn’t have the wide-ranging PR confidence of some, but she is steely in defence of what she knows. She shall not be moved.

OhHolyJesus · 19/04/2022 22:27

So it's really about LGBT but the Inclusive Britain report is about race. Let's see how much time is allocated to that.

www.gov.uk/government/publications/inclusive-britain-action-plan-government-response-to-the-commission-on-race-and-ethnic-disparities

I hope EHRC's witness are prepared and are clear in their language and outline their definitions of language at the outset.

Take charge Baroness, this committee is self appointed, you were chosen. No one takes Caroline Noakes (one for the blokes) seriously anyway...

TheBiologyStupid · 19/04/2022 22:30

Pluvia
"I was hoping Akua Reindorf would be speaking" - I'm not familiar with her. Falkner trying to "clarify" the single sex spaces policy on WH was an absolute car crash and yet Emma Barnett wasn't asking anything that she couldn't have anticipated and been prepared to answer clearly and robustly.

I seem to be staring at the Building Safety Bill debate for some reason.
