Ohio public university to pay $400,000 in damages after punishing professor for misgendering student

One lawsuit at a time, chip chip chip. We’re all in this together, eh?

Nick Meriwether, a philosophy professor at Shawnee State University, responded to a male student's question during a January 2018 political philosophy class by saying "Yes, sir." When the class ended, the student identified to the professor as transgender, and demanded to be referred to as a woman in the future, along with "feminine titles and pronouns,"

Meriwether didn't agree to the student's request, and court documents state that the student became belligerent and told the professor that he would be fired.

I love how the student immediately hulks out and throws down with the “you’ll be fired” threat as it usually works post-haste. I’m sure there were a few furious “IT’S MA’AM.”

The professor had no problem calling him by any name he requested, but that wasn’t good enough. He had to have those pronouns.

I imagine when future employers receive résumés with pronouns they must go straight in the bin. Too much trouble.

Google tells us that uni has around 3000 students. That’s a lot of pronouns to remember. That’s a lot of pressure to get them right if there’s a threat of getting fired!

True and a lot of money lobbed at professors after the fact. Could bankrupt the college quickly.

Plus we know some young adults are often changing pronouns. So not only to remember so many, to then know when they've changed and use the new one.
Sheesh, I wouldnt be in academia now, not that I'm clever enough.

This is a huge case. Universities and other institutions can’t afford to pay out similar amounts every time they breach an employee’s FA rights like this.

Good heavens reading links to other articles shows how captured the USA is. I just don't understand how when it is such an evangelical Christian country - can anyone explain please. Well very sad that it takes big bucks to make them question their remit and not common sense but I'll take it.

I'm stood at the photocopier opposite the office of our admin manager where she is chatting to another colleague and remembering I've been meaning to ask her if she has a spare wall calendar. But I can't as what with the four day weekend and all I have a total mental blank regarding her name. Confused

I swear if anyone does this to me I will take the chance if being diagnosed with early onset Alzheimer's and counter sue for discrimination on the basis of my poor memory.

It's all utterly ridiculous, and genuinely discriminatory of a range of people who will find this difficult to comply with for a variety of reasons.
