The impact of ‘pile-ons’ and trolling by gender critical Twitter accounts:

The paper (owned by the Daily Mail) is really going to town on their anti-women, pro self-ID stance.

No screen shots.

Funny that.

tabbycatstripy · 17/04/2022 14:20

Because it’s absolutely fine to tweet that JKR is “disgusting”, and that’s not being part of a years-long internet pile-on at all. Hmm

Embarrassingly bad journalism. I looked up the writer - she seems very young and most of her pieces seem to based on Twitter threads.

Funnily enough I just found this, also written by her, all about the trend of teenagers 'shifting' to their 'dream reality'. www.insider.com/shifttok-reality-shifting-respawn-amino-reddit-tumblr-instagram-twitter-tiktok-2021-12

"Younger people without a strongly-established sense of self may be at some danger from taking many new identities, as they can get divorced from reality," he said, adding that this could be a "predictor of psychosis."

Sounds familiar?

Abhannmor · 17/04/2022 15:48

Very disappointed but not too surprised

nepeta · 17/04/2022 16:28

So rash and biased.

Perhaps written by someone who never thought of first checking what happens in the reverse direction?

What about the pile-ons trans activists initiate against women disagreeing with them? What about all the thousands of nasty things JK Rowling receives on a permanent basis? And all those she mentions approvingly in a tweet, what about the pile-ons they then experience? And the terfisaslur website?

A proper analysis would point out that this happens in both directions, and then would dig deeper, to find out how common it is in each case, figure out some numbers and levels of threats, and then study all the data before writing something. But this is not meant to be a proper analysis, of course, just propaganda.

I am, however, in agreement with the writer on the horrors that Twitter incites, the collective screams of rage which are shot (perhaps unintentionally) at anyone who says something the other side disagrees with. Owen Jones' followers do this all the time, and there are many others I could mention here.

StrangeLookingParasite · 17/04/2022 20:43

Goodness, that's a huge pile of stupid right there.

StrangeLookingParasite · 17/04/2022 20:43

Ah, the Metro article, I mean.

nepeta · 18/04/2022 02:07

When I looked at the comments (earlier today) they were of our opinion, but there may have been new ones added as I saw the article widely advertised on trans Twitter accounts.

ItsLateHumpty · 18/04/2022 05:25

@nepeta

When I looked at the comments (earlier today) they were of our opinion, but there may have been new ones added as I saw the article widely advertised on trans Twitter accounts.
Still the same atm, and GC comments getting the most likes.

There are a couple of comments that seem to from trans people but they are getting push back and down votes. The hyperbole is another level!
The JKR lunch was described as a terrorist meet up by one (“… radical anti trans terrorists all met up to discuss their shared hatred…”) and apparently we want them to kill themselves said another (“… no one with the profile of JK Rowling or the power of Liz Truss, Rosie Duffield and Lord Blencathra. They are absolutely vicious; they will find your photos and bombard you with abuse, presumably in the hope that if they treat you horribly enough you may go back into the closet or take your life.”)

TheGreatATuin · 18/04/2022 06:33

I'm always struck by the complete lack of self-awareness of these things.
So it's okay for her to jump in and tweet nasty things about JK Rowling along with masses of other people, but if she then gets criticism for her tweet, then suddenly it's abuse and a pile on?
Hugely hypocritical.

StrangeLookingParasite · 20/04/2022 21:29

I can never see comments on Metro articles - where are they?

PurgatoryOfPotholes · 20/04/2022 23:27

More from the Metro, yesterday.

A woman who stripped in front of fellow rail passengers, called them ‘terrorists’ and threatened to take out guns on a train has been jailed.
Trisha Clifton also shouted ‘kill all the Muslims’ while gesturing as if she was holding a firearm, a court heard.
^The 49-year-old launched her tirade of abuse on April 1 when an inspector asked to see her ticket.
She began undressing and told train staff ‘don’t make me get my two handguns out’.^

Please see image in case you should ever be another London-Reading train with Clifton.
