Back then concerned women turned to their trade unions, progressive political parties, human rights organisations such as Liberty, Amnesty or PEN, to sporting bodies, think tanks, even women’s charities like the Fawcett Society. And every one turned its back.
They cannot be allowed to forget this.
I think this is so important.
Women’s organisations turned their back on those of us who took our concerns to them.
How did that happen? Why? And how can we stop it happening again?
These and many, many other questions need answered.
We cannot allow this to be airbrushed away. Those who turned their back on, or worse, who they attacked, belittled or lied to : women of colour, women of religious faith, women with mental, emotional, trauma or physical challenges, women and girls vulnerable in hospitals, campsites, schools, bathrooms and prisons.
It’s not enough to stop the harm, or try to patch us all up and say sorry.
People will have to take responsibility for the parts they played
