My god she’s brilliant. Thanks very much for sharing.

Edna311 · 15/04/2022 22:22

Excellent article. Janice is such a good writer.

BunnyBerries · 15/04/2022 22:32

Nice. Keep 'er lit, Janice!

nocoolnamesleft · 15/04/2022 22:51

Well said.

ErrolTheDragon · 15/04/2022 22:54

Many flooded Mumsnet, where left-wing men delving into the forums emerged, like anti-suffragette cartoonists, aghast that mothers weren’t talking about nappy rash or recipes, but their own rights. Imagine!

Hey, we can multi-task and talk about recipes at the same time!Grin

Some imagery of post cards in this link and how women should be kept silent from the votes for women campaign. I'm sure someone can link to a beautifully presented website that I m sure was linked on Mumsnet but I can't find.

Back then concerned women turned to their trade unions, progressive political parties, human rights organisations such as Liberty, Amnesty or PEN, to sporting bodies, think tanks, even women’s charities like the Fawcett Society. And every one turned its back.

They cannot be allowed to forget this.

@SwissBall

Back then concerned women turned to their trade unions, progressive political parties, human rights organisations such as Liberty, Amnesty or PEN, to sporting bodies, think tanks, even women’s charities like the Fawcett Society. And every one turned its back.

They cannot be allowed to forget this.

I think this is so important.

Women’s organisations turned their back on those of us who took our concerns to them.

How did that happen? Why? And how can we stop it happening again?

These and many, many other questions need answered.

We cannot allow this to be airbrushed away. Those who turned their back on, or worse, who they attacked, belittled or lied to : women of colour, women of religious faith, women with mental, emotional, trauma or physical challenges, women and girls vulnerable in hospitals, campsites, schools, bathrooms and prisons.

It’s not enough to stop the harm, or try to patch us all up and say sorry.

People will have to take responsibility for the parts they played

LauriePartridge4Eva · 16/04/2022 07:08

Another brilliant article from Janice....thanks for the link!!

Women were 'caught napping' because even though we theoretically knew that men could take our rights away, we never, ever truly believed they would. We didn't think they would, en masse, lower themselves to behave as they have. But they did and I for one will never trust men to do right by women again.

Cailin66 · 16/04/2022 07:12

At least two of the comment writers referred to mumsnet.

beastlyslumber · 16/04/2022 07:13

Brilliant article! Thank you for sharing.

Theeyeballsinthefuckingsky · 16/04/2022 07:15

I bloody love Janice! That article is filled with the cold fury we all feel.

“Deeds not words” oh yes!

tabbycatstripy · 16/04/2022 07:20

‘ Back then concerned women turned to their trade unions, progressive political parties, human rights organisations such as Liberty, Amnesty or PEN, to sporting bodies, think tanks, even women’s charities like the Fawcett Society. And every one turned its back.’

I’ll never trust any of these organisations again. This scandal has destroyed my faith in authority.

Aretina · 16/04/2022 08:04

I have also lost all trust, both in the authorities and in the organisations that are ostensibly there to act on our behalf.

I am also teaching my daughter about this experience as she grows up.

PrelateChuckles · 16/04/2022 08:13

Emily Maitlis retweeted a tweet by Lesley Semmens promoting this article!
"Do you really think women will simply let their loos and cycle race be lost without a fight? Deeds not words, as the suffragettes used to say." @VictoriaPeckham (share token)

Genuinely surprised!

Floisme · 16/04/2022 08:15

Yes. And in The Guardian and the BBC.

Theeyeballsinthefuckingsky · 16/04/2022 08:30

Perfect example here of trade Union fuckery

www.theguardian.com/education/2022/apr/16/female-teachers-misogyny-schools-culture-sexual-harassment-classrooms-incel

The NASUWT is apparently “deeply concerned about the level of misogyny facing women trans and non binary members and students” just fuck off with that BS, fuck off! Misogyny affects women, those kids no damn well what a woman is but of course the NASUWT can’t even allow women being harassed by their students as being something sex based.

Theeyeballsinthefuckingsky · 16/04/2022 08:30

So yes Janice is completely right. TU abandoned women with barely a moments thought!

Floisme · 16/04/2022 09:20

Which was the Union that refused to come on here to advise women on their employment rights?

Gemwoman · 16/04/2022 09:49

I was going to write that Janice's Wednesday column was really good too.

But she is so spot on about all the organisations that are supposed to provide the checks and balances in our supposed democracy have let women down at all levels ; from Girl Guiding through unions to the W&E committee and right through government departments. And still everyone is closing their eyes and trying to look away.

GibbonsGoatsGibbons · 16/04/2022 10:53

Ahh Janice's writing is such a tonic
Thanks Ig

Abhannmor · 16/04/2022 11:13

Ahem. I don't believe in this hyper individualist rubbish because I am a left wing man. How can any socialist betray women and gay people in this fashion?
