"Female identifying actor"

It's interesting that they didn't type "female identifying actor" into google images as you get people that don't look so pretty and female. AIBU that this is just for show and they just want a pretty woman for the role but want points for being woke? Also acting is about how you present to the outside world. I don't get casting based on internal feelings as surely someone looking like a hairy biker could turn up but they identify as female (whatever that means).

My husband could do that! He can identify as a female, is trans age and can speak some Swedish - he does a very good accent ( his ex gf was Swedish) - he also has very long hair

He is a brunette but we can bleach his hair ... and his beard is a lady beard natch

rabbitwoman · 15/04/2022 11:56

I am not sure I entirely mind the fact that they are willing to consider a trans actor for this, or any female role, as acting is the skill of presenting as something you are not and relies on the suspension of disbelief.

The fact is, though, that female actors really do have to conform to a certain type to be successful and that if the role is supposed to be a female facing uniquely female experiences (will she be trying for a baby, for instance, or required to be pregnant and give birth), the suspension of disbelief requirement might compromise the quality and successfulness of the film.

So casting decisions are going to be made on that basis.

I don’t care what they do, but I find it hilarious that for this female part, a convincing Swedish accent is a must, but a male would be fine.

Right, but why not any male? What will a "female-identifying" male actor be able to bring to it that any other male actor wouldn't?

Are we saying "female-identifying" males are able to portray women better than other males?

(Everything I've seen so far suggests the opposite, if anything)

Don't be silly. A man can woman better than a woman don't you know?

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 15/04/2022 12:53

Is it a single hander? No other actors?

Cos I want to see the ads for those other actors.

Male identifying actor... surely they ran one or two of those?

FOJN · 15/04/2022 13:02

I'm objecting to "female" identifying actor. Female is sex, biological reality, it's not an identity.

tabbycatstripy · 15/04/2022 13:03

‘A man can woman better than a woman don't you know?’

I must have forgotten!

nepeta · 15/04/2022 14:54

Why not someone identifying into the correct age range? Or identifying as a person with a good Swedish accent as am abstract inner truth (can brush up later on that)?

RoseslnTheHospital · 15/04/2022 15:10

"Female identifying" is someone trying to specify they want a woman, of the female born type, without falling foul of trans ideology and being harangued for using wrong speak, surely.

TheScienceStupid · 15/04/2022 16:38

Lily Allen recently won the renamed What's On Stage "Best Performer in a Female Identifying Role in a Play" award for her performance in 2:22 A Ghost Story. Because "Best Actress" is so uninclusive...

FKATondelayo · 15/04/2022 16:49

Sounds the perfect role for Eddie Izzard's Oscar hopes. He speaks lots of languages doncha know.

ErrolTheDragon · 15/04/2022 18:35

This seems unnecessarily exclusionary- there may well be talented male identifying actors who have an appearance similar to this and the requisite accent who'd be fine in the role. They're actors, you don't have to identify as a axe murderer to play one.

MangyInseam · 15/04/2022 21:16

I'm a bit radical with casting - I think anyone should be able to play any role, so long as the person is in fact convincing in the part, and I don't care what they do about costuming including make up, wigs, etc. I don't care if they "match" naturally in terms of race, sexuality, sex, ethnicity, religious affiliation, nationality. In this instance, I'd have to believe the person was in fact a Swedish woman, I don't care if he is actually a Nigerian man.

Chances are a Nigerian man would not make a convincing Swedish woman. But one never knows.

It is weird that they are asking for someone "female-identifying". Because presumably if a male who identifies as female can play the part, so could another male. Or, what about a female who identifies as male?

BoreOfWhabylon · 15/04/2022 21:32

The picture is the key though. That's what the person should look like.

They want a young, blonde, blue eyed, very feminine woman.

They just can't say it out loud.
