Kathleen's guide to navigating the "shouting and stamping"

unherd.com/2022/04/five-rules-for-dealing-with-transactivists/

As most mums know, it’s important to have a few strategies ready for when things get tricky. So — with a nod in solidarity to beleaguered adults across the land having to deal with transactivist drama in their organisations, homes, and friend groups — here are five supernanny-style rules from me.

1 Encourage them to use their words
2 Praise the good
3 Set boundaries
4 Ignore derailing attempts
5 Get them out in the fresh air

I don't know why the text appears with strikethrough!

I really love this!!

EdithStourton · 12/04/2022 15:32

I'd add No.6: set a sensible bedtime.

No 7 Restrict internet use.

Thoosa · 12/04/2022 16:16

How are we going to restrict their internet use? That is starting to sound like Victorian parenting. Grin

Pixiedust1234 · 12/04/2022 16:36

Very true. Behave like a tantruming child then expect to be treated like one.

Do you have children?
ButlerianJihad · 12/04/2022 17:35

I loved this! It was frustrating to see people accused her of being milktoast in order to get her book published and present a reasonable and moderate voice in the face of battshittery. But having achieved that and is now uncancellable I look forward to many more such articles from Prof Stock. I bloody love her.

Thoosa · 12/04/2022 18:02

Do you have children?

🙄

I was commenting on your extension of the metaphor.

But if you really care whether I have children, there’s AS.

DanceToTheMusicOf · 12/04/2022 18:16

I loved that!

mrziggycoco · 12/04/2022 18:54

Just ask questions.

I'd probably add - make sure they're not hungry or thirsty to avoid hangry behaviour.

So very perceptive : )

I have a lot of respect for Stock, she seems to have an integrity you don’t see so often these days.

FemaleAndLearning · 12/04/2022 21:02

I'm looking forward to more of her writing now she has lost her chains of academia.

Voice0fReason · 12/04/2022 21:28

Such a clever article and so true

Cuck00soup · 12/04/2022 22:41

I love KS's writing and her humour. What a cracking Professor she must have been.

My rules go something like
Ignore tantrums. Unless they make you laugh.
Say yes, not no. Yes of course Freddie can like pink and play with dolls.
You can play at being a tiger all day long but I won't be feeding you antelope.
