@HollowTalk

Oh my comment was read out!
Which one was it?!

I think it's good that RD was on, after quite a few of us wrote suggesting her as a guest. Shows maybe someone's listening up there in BBC Land.

bellinisurge · 12/04/2022 12:03

I had some charmer elsewhere on here pouting "well it's [the Q word has] been reclaimed so it's your problem ".

Eye rolling so hard I've got a headache

Thelnebriati · 12/04/2022 12:23

Lottie Lewis tweeted a breakdown of the interview. IDK why Emma thought it was appropriate to push Rosie to resign;

Here's an attempted gotcha over the tweet Rosie Duffield liked:

twitter.com/hughster/status/1513809065230712839

Looking at the context then I really can't see the problem. But of course, with trans activists it's always selective quoting and misrepresentation.

HollowTalk · 12/04/2022 12:34

@SpinningMeSoftly It was the one quoting the saying, "No Pope is going to tell me that I'm not a Catholic." I heard it from a Catholic priest who'd left the priesthood and thought it was apt for Rosie Duffield. Just because she disagrees with some of Labour's ridiculous views it doesn't mean she isn't suited to being a Labour politician.

SpinningMeSoftly · 12/04/2022 12:52

Thanks, @Hollow. Good quote.

Yes I felt Rosie was being chastised for having fun with friends. WTF.. maybe the intention was for Rosie to address the issue of Twitter having a meltdown about it, but she ended up having to justify it.

And why push her to resign? That would be yet another example of women being pushed out of the public sphere. The interview made me feel really uncomfortable for Rosie.

DrBlackbird · 12/04/2022 13:07

It was to resign from the Labour Party…. Presumably to then run as an independent. Bit nuts though as it’d mean Labour losing a sensible voice and one less woman in politics.

Floisme · 12/04/2022 13:12

...and one less woman in politics
Only if she stood and lost. From what I know, I imagine Rosie Duffield would have an excellent chance of winning as an independent. It would be no less than the Labour Party deserved.

ErrolTheDragon · 12/04/2022 13:59

I thought it was ok. EB raised various questions which RD was able to answer calmly and coherently.

I don't know if there was more feedback later in the program, but re the ill informed 'most vulnerable' bit, I think it's quite normal in this sort of program for listeners contributions to be given with no comment.

JoodyBlue · 12/04/2022 14:01

that was a great quote - the point made that the Labour Party is as much Rosie's as Keir's. Really good point @HollowTalk

JoodyBlue · 12/04/2022 14:04

Of the comments read out, it seemed to me, the balance fell in favour of those women who will raise the "respect my sex..." questions with any canvasssers on the doorstep.

I especially liked Rosie saying we can care about all the issues. It doesn't have to be this issue and then everything else.

That said, I will not vote for any party that cannot define a woman in terms of biology. It is now foundational for me.

Monitaurus · 12/04/2022 14:11

Emma stated that some listener had said that they did not understand the language used when discussing the issue. I can only assume that she meant the narcissistic ramble from Grace Lavery that was referred to , which actually No one understood! I would have liked to have heard Emma challenge GL as hard as she did today RD. great to hear from Rosie ...I would vote for her if she went independent.

I love that quote. It’s how I used to feel when my (male, conservative) friend told me that if I was very left wing I had to believe Stalin was a top bloke, and how also I feel now when some eejit claims I’m terribly right wing for thinking biology is relevant. Stop telling me what I think like you have the authority!

GCMM · 12/04/2022 18:56

Rosie Duffield is my MP and I would certainly vote for her again, either as a Labour or independent candidate. But I don't think she would get in as an independent- the student vote was very important in Canterbury last time and I doubt students would support her again....

stickanotherlogonthefire · 12/04/2022 23:26

RD is my MP, I'll be voting for her again.
I'm not sure the students won't come out for her again too, depends how angry they are about Boris being allowed to party while they weren't.

This is an intentional outcome. It is a planned part of forced changes in the meanings of 'women and girls' and 'female', so that they can be re-purposed as referring to pure inner feelings only.
WarriorN · 13/04/2022 06:37

There's quite a lot of comment on Twitter that EB didn't grill GL anywhere near as much as Rosie.

Personally I'm of the opinion that

1/ the contexts were different; GL was flogging a book. The interview style was going to be different from the outset.

2/ MPS should be grilled; AD was as others have been - Rosie showed immense grace and poise.

3/ TW never debate. Esp GL. That's becoming increasingly obvious. So we will never hear that kind of interview. Unless rose of dawn or others go on. But they wouldn't as it's woman's hour.

4/ GL really didn't need challenging, it was glorious bullshit and EB carefully repeated the fact GL has a penis through the book title many times. She also repeated - in your opinion and that not everyone agrees with GLs statements. It would have been great to have been challenged more but again, it was a book flogging interview.

5/ the medium of radio isn't kind to the vast majority of TW.

6/ they've a sport episode coming which I think will be interesting.

WarriorN · 13/04/2022 06:41

Yes it is within the lala land of GD.

But WH did have the woman on who was part of a huge paper around the erasure if this language and the importance of it too.

No long term listener of WH will be fooled.

WarriorN · 13/04/2022 06:42

I also think there are pockets of the youngest generation who think all this is absolute bullshit.

I saw a tweet that I wished I'd saved where a mum describes a chat with her 20 yr old son in which he says that "no one outside of the collective believes any of it."

Sport will help

Crcohetmonster · 13/04/2022 06:43

The sports episode they were trying to get Veronica Ivy on. I swear the producers are secretly GC. Why else would you not get someone sane on to talk about this issue

Helleofabore · 13/04/2022 06:48

I actually took EB questions around being Rosie staying in the party as showing how determined Rosie was to stay and fight and how there are people who are still in labour who have differ from the ‘part line’.

Rosie really does comes across as poised and hard to rankle too. Personally, I wish she was my MP!

borntobequiet · 13/04/2022 08:18

EB gave Kathleen Stock a pretty hard time too. I thought it was to be able to deny any sort of bias, but also to show she (KS) could articulate her case clearly and unambiguously when under pressure. The tactic of letting people like Lavery blather on works too as they happily demonstrate their batshittery unprompted.

WarriorN · 13/04/2022 09:14

I'm not sure why so many on twitter are annoyed that EB is basically being professional here and not treating women with kid gloves on this matter.

We WANT to be challenged. It makes our arguments stronger.

ErrolTheDragon · 13/04/2022 09:20

I've not seen the Twitter but I agree. I thought it was a good interview on the whole, nothing RD couldn't deal with calmly and sensibly. Which is of itself quite illuminating in contrast to many other interviewees on this subject.
