Incredible that they write a whole article without using pronouns. The only time the word woman or women is used is when referring to an external source.
The image they use is clearly a woman. Is this instead of using people who menstruate! It makes some of the statistics seem a bit strange.

Your links don't work for me

Artichokeleaves · 10/04/2022 21:33

No, biologically female mammals, human or otherwise, menstruate.

Biologically male mammals, human or otherwise, do not.

Its not difficult.

Ida Emilie Steinmark is she/her on twitter. What a surprise!

Fascinating this appropriation of commonly shared language and the decision that there is now no word for the females of the species.

And apparently a science journalist! Though of course you don't need to be a vet to know what a dog is!

Most don't.

Humans also ejaculate and some humans suffer from erectile dysfunction.

It is extremely odd that the Guardian feels no urge to use such language when it comes to male issues. True inclusiveness would require that.

The final article may of course also show the influences of an editor. Or not, but we have no way of telling.

Not all humans menstruate women do

nepeta · 10/04/2022 22:58

Suppose we actually did end in a world where the biological sex of individuals cannot be mentioned at all, and where all such groups as 'women' and 'men' and 'non-binary people' would just be groupings based on some bundles of shared personality traits and would all include both male and female individuals.

Why would we have gender at all in such a future?

And how would children be taught about reproduction? In secret, I assume.

Neverreturntoathread · 10/04/2022 23:04

Why is the guardian so obsessed with periods? It’s a bit weird.

IStandWithMaya · 10/04/2022 23:14

If a reader didn't already know that it's women (not men) who menstruate, this article would not inform them.

Its phrasing is deliberately arranged to avoid mentioning women.

The author is aiming not to cause offence to trans men (biological females).

The result is garbled nonsense.

‘People who menstruate.’ I’m sure there used to be a word for those people. Someone help me out. Wumben? Wimpund? Woomud?"

Exactly. And this is why she is attacked. We are to be silent and inclusive while our very group is erased and the basis on which we could mobilise for political purposes removed.

Besides, I do find it odd that the interests of a very small group of people, however much in pain, must now outweigh the well-being of all other people.
