“Trans people don’t want to destroy women’s sport, as a whole. I wouldn’t want to. I do parkruns, and I put down female. I’ve probably knocked somebody from 500th place to 501st. Should I have put down my natal gender?”

This part I found particularly galling. Yes, Rebecca, you should have put down male. You know, your biological sex. Ffs, they don’t give a shit.

tabbycatstripy · 10/04/2022 06:48

‘Destroying women’s sports’ happens when a women can no longer assume fairness as unfairness is baked in by the rules. That’s all that needs to happen. Participation is not as important as fairness. Just as it would be unfair for me to participate in a Master chess tournament using AI because I’m not great at chess and I really want to play, it’s unfair for males to participate in female sport using male bodies.

lovelyweathertoday · 10/04/2022 07:08

Funny how the woman in that exchange seemed to change her views, but the other person didn't budge at all.

Is that female socialisation of not wanting to be rude to a person?

As a parkrun regular and a club runner, this actually really annoys me too. Grassroots sports is also effected by this issue. I'm actually just starting a women's only running group because girls and women's participation in sports low.
OneEpisode · 10/04/2022 08:29

I did feel sorry for Rebecca. Aged 61. Her face must hurt so much.

SapphosRock · 10/04/2022 09:16

My gender position is shit in the Brighton parkrun due to this very issue and yes it bothers me.

Maybe coming 500th was important to the woman you casually knocked into 501st place.

Linguini · 10/04/2022 09:19

Omg that exchange is completely vacuous, lacking in basic logic and understanding of women's rights and what's happening, riddled in "it never happens" and "now I've met a transperson they were so lovely I've completely changed my mind there could possibly be any problems with TRAism".... Gender ideology myths 101 condensed into one painfully happy clappy casually misogynistic pandering to the penis, exchange.

And breathe!

If it's any consolation, Parkrun founder Paul Sinton-Hewitt has retweeted a couple of posts in support of women's sports including one from Sharron Davies saying:

"No one wants is banned from sport, nor does anyone who's passionate about sport want that. What we want is fair sport, just compete where your biology matches the others in the race/game."

lanadelgrey · 10/04/2022 09:46

It is worth writing in to the Guardian, still. As easy as posting in here

Floisme · 10/04/2022 09:46

I wonder what would have happened if Ada had said, 'But Rebecca, it's not all about what you want.'

lovelyweathertoday · 10/04/2022 09:50

So incredibly unfair. Only women should be in the women's category.

zanahoria · 10/04/2022 09:50

Partly

But mainly because if she had not followed the script, it would not have been published

I do parkrun, too. I want to know how I compare to my age and sex average. Not to a male.
GingerPCatt · 10/04/2022 10:06

Years ago I met a man and, ya know, he was so lovely I married him. I still know that there are loads of men out there who aren't lovely and are actually rapists and Murders.
The 'just meet at lovely TW and then you'll realise none of your perfectly reasonable objections are silly' argument really annoys me. Scared caste.

Yes. Yes yes yes yes yes, you SHOULD, Rebecca. I stand with any woman who is even slightly bothered about being knocked down a place towards the bottom of the rankings at their local parkrun, or in a big city marathon, because the person listed as 25th FV60 is actually a male. Grassroots sport matters as much as the headline grabbing stuff.
GingerPCatt · 10/04/2022 10:07

Realise ALL of your objections are silly. Sigh need more coffee.

zanahoria · 10/04/2022 10:12

I noticed Ada said " I had steak and chips. I don’t know why I chose it – my daughter’s a vegan so I wouldn’t normally"

She seems like someone who tries to fit in with people

LK1972 · 10/04/2022 10:18

I've read as far as Ada, female and American, saying 'I don't believe in the trope that people will self-id as another sex to commit crimes'. Two words, Ada, WI Spa. What an idiot.

LK1972 · 10/04/2022 10:23

Maybe it's because Ada only reads The Guardian, thinking about it, which claimed WI Spa was a hoax, but never, as far as I know, published the follow up with a convicted sex offender being arrested for flashing women and girls. Still an idiot though.

bellinisurge · 10/04/2022 10:25

"I’ve probably knocked somebody from 500th place to 501st"

Never occurs to them that the person knocked down a position for their benefit might have set 500th as an important fitness target

LK1972 · 10/04/2022 10:26

Zanahoria, no, it's Rebecca, the TW, saying that, 'cos that's what we women do, only eat what others in the house don't object to, innit it?

bellinisurge · 10/04/2022 10:38

Women are so accustomed to down grading their goals to serve the patriarchy that obviously women should move over for me and my dick.

Theeyeballsinthefuckingsky · 10/04/2022 10:41

It’s such a facile piece, such an obvious “I was once a nasty woman who thought TW were dreadful because I’d never met one but now I have and they’re amazing and all my doubts have completely disappeared”. I very much doubt Ada is remotely GC

It’s like the ppl who turn up here assuming we don’t know any TW and it’s because we’re scared old Pearl clutches that we insist on single sex spaces. they must think people are fucking stupid

(And I assume they shoehorned Rebeccas reference to a daughter in to so that ppl made a mental connection between women & motherhood ergo Rebecca is a mother and a woman)

Lemonyfuckit · 10/04/2022 11:01

@zanahoria

This part caused an eye roll - oh it's being printed in the Guardian so better pretend I have some vegan credentials!

But the whole 'dining across the divide' - the conversation seemed so pointless and vacuous, and didn't get to the heart of any of the issues just skimmed it. Oh ok you want to participate in sport as your gendered identity do you and that trumps women's right to participate against other women? FFs.

KimikosNightmare · 10/04/2022 12:28

It was completely vacuous. I wasn't even sure what the issues and the divide were.
