The Grip Dress

Brought to my attention by the lovely Alison Moyet on twitter. A dress that has a hand encircling the wearer's throat. Yes, it's real. Somebody wore it on the red carpet (Idk who she was, but she was absolutely wasted).

Delightful, no?

Allison's tweet:

"Disgusting revolting misogyny. When are we going to drop the pretence of fashion and deal with the fact that we are teaching our daughters to be ‘empowered’ cum-box punch bags. Furious."

I only have swearing.

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 08/04/2022 22:51

I was so hoping this was something like a Gussie Grippers range or a MN Get A Grip T-shirt.

How very disappointing.

I've written previously about the distressing normalisation of strangulation and the health challenges it poses but this is another level. Female socialisation has many harms but glorifying this is amongst the most pernicious at a time when women are having to struggle to have the judicial system accept the premise of, We Can't Consent to This.

I saw this ages ago and tbh didn't think anything of it other than it was a hand. Has the patriarchy got me?

JulesJules · 08/04/2022 23:07

It's Julia Fox, an ex of Kanye. The dress is utterly revolting.

PaleBlueMoonlight · 08/04/2022 23:15

I find that really distressing.

SmellyOldOwls · 08/04/2022 23:18

Ooh, edgy Hmm

As someone who was routinely held like this in my abusive relationship I find it really upsetting.

I think if you don't have that shit in your life at all (which is a good thing,) it's possible to read it as creepy horror movie rather than creepy sex film.

Ah. Just looked her up and she does seem to make unusual fashion choices a lot.

Foul. It’s sexualising abuse, as we all know some people get off on it. It infuriates me that my daughters are growing up in a world that wants to normalise choking women for sexual kicks.

Me too. No wonder so many girls don't want to become women.
DorothyZbornakIsAQueen · 09/04/2022 15:12

I found it rather upsetting.

nepeta · 09/04/2022 17:01

It's sexualising abuse, as others have pointed out.

Fashion has done similar things before. I remember a flood of fashion pictures a few years ago where women were shown as murdered bodies lying on the ground or with a black eye or with tears in their eyes, all the time while wearing something new and very expensive.

It was defended on artistic and edgy grounds. The more things change..

The dress is foul+++

NeverDropYourMooncup · 09/04/2022 17:31

Has nobody picked up on the racist imagery yet?

A black hand around a white throat?

Really?

nepeta · 09/04/2022 17:44

I didn't, perhaps because her gloves are black, too, and the whole dress. But I can now see that as one possible way of interpreting it.

My initial impression was that this is a reference to the argument that women want to be slapped and choked in sex. But many different interpretations might work here.

Lynnthesearesexnotgenderpeople · 09/04/2022 17:54

She wore it to tbe Oscars - there were a few memes about Julia Fox afterwards because she said 'I did it myself' about her eye makeup, sounding totally out of it (and with very bloodshot eyes), but no one really seemed to care that much about the dress. I thought it was horrendous, and totally normalising 'choking' (yuk).

Artichokeleaves · 09/04/2022 18:32

Yeah. It's sexy to be abused, girls. It's what every little girl dreams of. Hmm

I'll wait to see the male models strutting the pants that are the shape of a woman's hand wrapped around his balls.

Only once, only briefly but enough to be really upsetting too.

Voice0fReason · 09/04/2022 21:18

It's vile, really vile.
