A really clear well-articulated piece on why therapy for gender dysphoria is important and totally different from gay conversion therapy.

This is a good article. Especially the below which might help guard against efforts to insert "gender identity"?

I am sure that no one wants to pass legislation that has the consequence of outlawing legitimate therapy. I hope that the government can be much clearer on the face of the bill about what it wants to ban.

SallyLockheart · 08/04/2022 07:13

Excellent article

BethnalGreenBambinos · 08/04/2022 08:43

A clear and sensible article. Presumably to balance against the piece from Alicia Kearns yesterday. No contest really!

zanahoria · 08/04/2022 09:04

In this context the term “conversion therapy” is unhelpful and we should be more explicit about what it is we are intending to ban

This is a good approach. It is wrong to attack therapists when religion is the problem.

Edmontosaurus · 08/04/2022 09:09

It can be a manifestation of autism, trauma or same sex attraction

I would also like to see some research into it being a rejection of the porn culture - extreme, sexualised, gender stereotypes- with which young people (particularly girls) are now bombarded. If you grow up thinking that the only way to be a woman is to look and behave like someone in a porn movie no wonder you no longer want to be one.

LastTrainEast · 08/04/2022 12:10

We need more articles like that since people are being told something quite different is going on to influence them.

FromOurHatsToOurFeet · 08/04/2022 12:13

I love how she uses the term "good law" Smile

Crcohetmonster · 08/04/2022 12:28

I’ve just seen 50 conservative MPs are threading to revolt if their is no addition of gender identity to conversion therapy bill. My questions are.

Why are they so invested In Getting this through when experts have pointed out the law needs to be very clear.

Who is paying them?

Slothtoes · 08/04/2022 12:37

Quote from Jackie Doyle Price’s excellent article:

‘And in respect of trans it isn’t about driving a wedge between LGB and T. It is a reflection that gender dysphoria is complex. It can be a permanent condition. It can be a phase that people pass through. It can be a manifestation of other causes of distress such as autism, trauma or indeed same-sex attraction.

This is why there must be robust care pathways to explore gender where the use of medical treatments with irreversible consequences are being actively considered. Treatments that can cause loss of sexual function and fertility and permanent changes in appearance should not be commenced without medical practitioners properly establishing that this is the right course for their patient.

This is called “informed consent” and it is the backbone of our NHS. It is, in short, the right thing to do.’

Exactly right. Flowers

I would very much like to see this being researched. It seems such a damned obvious connection. I would dread growing up female in this culture.

My thoughts, too. Hope the secret, backroom deals (a la a certain Conservative MP) which disbenefit women are over.
ResisterRex · 08/04/2022 23:01

I saw that about 50 Conservatives. It seemed a high (and unsubstantiated) figure. Mostly just quite high

AnnieLou12 · 09/04/2022 09:04

Do we know who any of these 50 MPs are?

Slothtoes · 09/04/2022 09:44

Well this daily Mail article refers to a Guardian article as it’s original source, which I couldn’t find by looking on the guardian site online. So that’s not a sign of a massive rebellion is it. No other press. Even Guido Fawkes hasn’t covered it.
Suspiciously none of these 50 rebels have broken cover. I’d be tempted to be sceptical that their number is just a campaigning tactic, a number being bandied about to flush out anyone who’ll go on the record. I think we’ll need to assume that’s the case, until there’s some actual evidence of their rebel plot.

Rebel and do what? Vote against a ban on gay conversion therapy? That’ll go down well.
