Nancy tweets:

"Really thoughtful thread on the need to expand gender affirming care, including for people who detransition"

Is the next move from the TQ+ people going to be a move into "gender affirming care" for those transitioning back? This is the thread tweeted, from someone who describes themselves thus:

detransitioned/retransitioned FtMtF virago 🗡 (any/all) 🌱 anti-essentialist feminist 🌿 bisexual tomcat 🐱

"As trans visibility and access to trans care increases, more people will seek out transition for dysphoria or gender incongruence. Some will decide that transitioning wasn't for them, because their goals didn't pan out, their dysphoria wasn't mitigated, social pressure, etc.
Even if the rate of detransition stays the same, the absolute number will increase as trans people increase, too. This is not inherently negative, but what is bad is the lack of support and resources for people who ultimately decide that they need to detransition.
Ignoring or writing off the needs of detransitioners as too niche to matter not only harms us, but also trans people who would benefit from better information on transition options, navigating doubts/fears, social adjustment, and working through regrets.
I'm lucky, in a sense, that I don't regret any of my transition and am happy I did it. Not all detransitioners feel the same way. We can validate those experiences without universalizing them, or utilizing them as a prescription against transition care.
We can recognize that what is profoundly positive for some people may be very negative for others. Some people will have regrets, some will make mistakes. Some would've continued transitioning under different circumstances, some wish they'd never done so. All are okay to feel.
The tragedy isn't that people are allowed to make decisions regarding their bodies or self-expression. The true tragedy is that most of the people who seek such options do so with very little support and limited info. It's cause for an expansion of resources, not a restriction."

Stonewalls next income stream?

I thought exactly that a few days ago. It's hard not to be cynical in the current climate.

Stealhsquirrelnutkin · 07/04/2022 19:20

Perhaps it has dawned on them that trying to bully the government into submission by refusing to attend the expensive conference that was being arranged on their behalf has not done them any favours among the group of people who will be deciding how much funding to offer them next time around?

After all, they get an awful lot of money from the tax payer each year. So it was really, really stupid of them to alienate the people who decide where that money goes. Perhaps Sex Matters and the Lesbian Gay and Bisexual Alliance will be trousering the cash that has gone to Mermaids, Stonewall and the other trans lobby groups, now that they have overplayed their hand? I most fervently hope that this is the case.

Perhaps the silver lining is that if even Badlypaintedpaperwall can see the writing is on the, erm, wall things really are going our way? Is the phrase 'reverse ferret'? This is totally about income streams.

How dare they try to commoditise people in this way. Just for jobs and status and liberal credentials. It’s disgusting.

Anyway, you can't detransition in law, can you?

Isn't that one of the problems Keira has? She's got a GRC and in order to change gender on a GRC you have to have dysphoria - which Keira doesn't have.

So, I may be wrong in this, but, Keira's still a male in law? Because the law is an ass.

Not sure about Keira, but I think that's the position in the amendments proposed for Scotland. Once you've declared yourself the opposite sex, it would be a criminal offence akin to fraud to detransition.

But I could well be wrong. Confused

Ereshkigalangcleg · 07/04/2022 20:18

They know that detransitioners pose an existential threat to trans rights, so if they include them under the transgender umbrella they are keeping their enemies closer.

I think they've finally realised that they can't pretend they don't exist.

Gamekeeper & poacher.

Hirples to make it even more confusing, I thought that was promised in Scotland but was - in the end - not in the proposals. Might be wrong though

There's going to be enough for years to come sadly Sad

Christ they have brass balls.

It reminds me a bit of something C.S Lewis wrote in the Screwtape Letters, where he says that people are so used to believing a dozen different incompatible philosophies, it really doesn't bother them if something doesn't seen to make a lot of sense.

And in this case, it doesn't bother them to just change their belief system as it becomes convenient for their narrative to change. Brains like goldfish not remembering what they said and thought six months ago.

I have a feeling (nothing more than that) that a consultation asked whether detransition should be allowed, and if so, how often.

I also have a feeling that I replied yes (thinking of teenagers and young people making a horrendous mistake, rather than convicted sex offenders upon their release from the female prison estate) but only once.

But I might have dreamed it all.
