Wondering idly what Zoe W contributed to this.

The woman who doesn't believe in the trope that people (i.e. men) are going to self-identify as the other sex so they can commit crimes perhaps also doesn't believe the MoJ stat that over 60% of trans identifying males in prison are sex offenders.

I'm not sure I get the point of that article at all!

I'm sure I could sit down and have a lovely conversation with lots of different trans women but does that mean I want to compete against them in a women only race or be on the same single set ward when I am at my most vulnerable?

Guardian's gonna Guard....

RedPanda901 · 07/04/2022 14:42

Interestingly Hadley Freeman has written this for the UnHerd.
Is she still writing for the Guardian? Last piece I saw her write was an interview with Margaret Atwood.

Yes she still writes for the Guardian and tweeted she had no intention of leaving (or words to that effect) when her first Unherd article was published. She did a cracking piece on the Oscars for the Graun last week.

A very strange Dining Across the Divide since there seemed to be no divide save for the fact Ada seemed weirdly ignorant of trans issues for someone living in the 21st century. I’m not even talking about the massive uptick in discussion and visibility of recent years - some of her comments sound like someone thinking about it for the very first time. Like the reaction of someone who’s never encountered a trans person might have on reading an article about gender dysphoria back in the 90s.

Still, it ended with the heartwarming message that any concerns can simply be eradicated by meeting some nice trans people. Which is of course the only correct message, because we know that ‘concerns’ can only ever boil down to ignorance (and they certainly found someone ignorant here) or hate.

All’s well that ends well.

It is odd. Of course there are loads of wonderful transgender individuals! That is not the problem here, and neither is nobody denying that transgender people often face harassment and even violence (though do not have, overall, higher rates of being murdered in the UK or the US). Nobody on the gender critical side I have witnessed has ever wanted to deny transgender people the same rights everybody else has, including the right not to be discriminated in employment or education.

Those are not the problems, and it's wrong to argue that they are. The real problem is that the the new trans rights demands include demands which have (for a short historical time period only) belonged to the rights of biological women, and that the new trans rights demands include the 'right' to redefine all language applying to this matter and the erasure of the biological sex as a politically meaningful group. Also, the new gender identities ('cis' women) are simply forced on the rest of us, and we are no longer allowed to be women because of bodies are female. Indeed, female bodies are supposed to be gender-neutral ones.

The Guardian refuses to acknowledge the clash of the trans rights demands with the rights biological women (who haven't tried to identify out of their oppression by calling themselves nonbinary.)

nepeta · 07/04/2022 16:06

And agreed that Ada does not seem to be a good example of someone who would be gender critical. So our side is painted as simply very ignorant and in need of education.

I saw that demand on Twitter two years ago so I went and became educated, and here I am.

DomesticatedZombie · 07/04/2022 16:11

A series of photographs of one person talking while another person listens. How unsurprising.

BootsAndRoots · 07/04/2022 16:19

Question: "Should transwomen be allowed to professionally compete against women?"

Answer: "I like running in the park".

ProstheticConscience · 07/04/2022 17:31

I was rather puzzled by the heavy handed photoshopping of both parties in the discussion. Party on the right more so than on the left.

Bizarre.
