Ed Miliband disappointing on Sky News

Asked about trans conversion therapy, supports a ban (fine).

But then: “I think the way the debate has been conducted... these anatomical debates... I think it is really awful for so many trans people in our country who are... You know, you’ve got teenagers who are trans who are self-harming...”

So disappointing. You cannot prevent people talking about human biology and call it “anatomical debates”. You look stupid doing it, and you would be totalitarian if you actually tried to prevent it.

Human biology isn’t a debate. People are simply pointing out basic reality. They wouldn’t have to if there wasn’t a contingent of people determined to obfuscate truth.

Yet another well-meaning but woefully under-informed politician.

AtrociousCircumstance · 07/04/2022 09:14

Weak.

EmbarrassingHadrosaurus · 07/04/2022 09:14

I saw him being interviewed about his latest book.

Laughing about how he has PTSD from his time at the Dispatch Box in the House of Commons. At a time when veterans can't get adequate access to support and there's a dearth of CAMHS or adult mental health services.

I considered he'd been unfortunate in some ways during his time as leader and admired his self-deprecation. However, he is purblind through his privilege and it's beyond disappointing that he's chosen the #BeKind approach rather than having the courtesy to use his formidable intellect and experience to speak compassionately about the topic.

Deliriumoftheendless · 07/04/2022 09:15

He’s disappointing full stop.

tabbycatstripy · 07/04/2022 09:15

Nobody called it “anatomical debates” with a look of curdled horror when people were saying “some women have penises” or calling us cervix-owners.

Only when we say “men have penises” is it an issue for men like EM.

Yes, privileged and weak.

If you have children who are self harming you need therapists to be allowed to look into the range of causes that are contributing to that. Do these middle class people really think that trying to turn their child into something they've been promised by strangers on Tumblr or Tiktok is a long term solution to mental distress?

I use to be a party activist, but I've had it with Labour until this generation of dolts and cowards has fucked off and made way for some people who can actually engage their brains.

OatSprout · 07/04/2022 09:37

He just has no idea has he. About mental illness or anything else. Labour are dangerous idiots.

SweetGrapes · 07/04/2022 09:39

Ed's a has-been. He had his day and lost long back - not really disappointed over anything he says now.

Boris has opened the curtains and let the sunlight come streaming in - and we can see all the cobwebs & dust in the Labour corner.

Just seen Sharon's fantastic interview that starts with "Boris says... do you agree?" Nothing will dampen my mood for a while. Grin

tabbycatstripy · 07/04/2022 13:58

There’s another clip of him talking about sports. He’s adamant a blanket ban (on male participation in female sport) would be unfair, but when pushed on what would be fair, it’s hands in the air, “Oh no, that’s for the sporting bodies to decide.”

If he has nothing useful to say, he should say nothing. Let the sporting bodies listen to women and make decisions based on the evidence, not his political biases.

these anatomical debates

Mate, if you try to redefine away female so they can't say no to male people, and their rights and equality and access disappear under the feet of male people, you've driven them to pointing out in words of one syllable what the problem is and it is stop fucking pretending biology isn't a thing in order to trample sex based rights for women!

MUPPET.

It's the 'don't upset me by saying get off that hurts when I'm busy standing on your foot'. This is not all and only about the feelings of males.

Calennig · 07/04/2022 14:35

Yep both depressing and illuminating.

I saw the argument being made on ITV news last night by Trans football team player that each sport should be able to decide itself and as blanket bans are unfair - I think it's just the new line.

Or, blanket bans are fair as the default. And it's up to another set of people (other than women) to make the case by case argument that it's unfair with the evidence to support the assertions.

Calennig · 07/04/2022 14:50

The emphasis on fairness but ignoring the unfairness to biological women just caught my attention.

I just suspect it will be pushed as unfair be kind and effect on women glossed over - or at leasts that's the tack that will be tried in the media to see if it works.

Artichokeleaves · 07/04/2022 15:00

I've said it on another thread, but it's an answer I think these speakers need to give:

how many distressed/unfairly treated females does it take to equal (or outweigh) one distressed/unfairly treated male?

Let's put a number on it.

tabbycatstripy · 07/04/2022 15:13

Yes, they are not truly concerned with ‘fairness’ but with ‘inclusion’ at the cost of fairness. There is nothing fair about it. It’s like me saying I have to compete as if I am disabled (I’m not) because I deeply feel at the core of my being (to quote Owen Jones today) that I have a disability (even though I don’t) and all the athletes with disabilities being told to STFU as I, a slightly tubby woman in my mid-forties, beat the hell out of highly skilled, toned athletes over whom I happen to have an unearned a physical advantage. Then, to add insult to injury, we call them bigots.

Hmm

What is wrong with Labour. Everytime they open their mouths it gets worse.

Yes, lets put a number to it.

For a single Lia Thomas to win a medal - there are three women who have been pushed down a level at the podium and one that was pushed off the team.

So 4 women directly discriminated against in order to keep 1 Lia happy.

Shall we count the little girls who will see this podium winner is nothing like them and be discouraged from trying swimming at a competitive level? How many do you think?

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 07/04/2022 19:04

Ed who?

Who cares about him anyway?

IvyTwines · 08/04/2022 08:56

That Kay Burley clip with him, ending on 'be kind', their hurt feelings. No thought for the feelings of women and girls who are yet again being asked to play second fiddle and emotional support animal to males, set aside their own aims and life goals in the sports that were supposedly theirs and cede them to mediocre males, males who can now hold the trophy and trouser the prize money, sponsorships and scholarships if they enter women's sports but who couldn't against their fellow males?
