Anyone watching the Newsnight? Just wondering who is the Trans person speaking at the mo - not Debbie H, the other one.

yes. Never seen the other person.
I was very disappointed in Kirsty Wark's approach with the TRA, who was speaking about how important therapy was to young people who thought they were trans. But quite evidently believed that they should only be affirmative. If KW knew her stuff she would have pinned her down on this instead of just doing a load of nodding,
Unfortunately I also think Debbie Hayton was clear enough. If I didn't already know the nuts and bolts of this subject, I would have come away none the wiser

MaMaLa321 · 06/04/2022 23:18

wasn't clear enough, I meant

DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat · 06/04/2022 23:23

Yvy DeLuca

Tiphaine · 06/04/2022 23:33

If I remember rightly KW is full TWAW.

MTCoffeePot · 06/04/2022 23:43

I got the impression that Kirsty Work was trying to generate a sense of outrage but it didn't happen. I have to say that I lost concentration when DeLuca was speaking.

EstelleCostanza · 06/04/2022 23:45

KW is useless on this, as on most issues requiring any degree of intellectual rigour.

Ereshkigalangcleg · 06/04/2022 23:47

Who is Deluca? Never heard of them.

Qwill · 06/04/2022 23:49

Conversion therapy is wrong. Completely wrong. But that isn’t the issue here, I think the meaning has been hijacked.

As a Scot there's probably no other option if she ever wants to visit her family again…

Why on earth couldn't Newsnight have interviewed Sinead Watson rather than DH?

GreenUp · 07/04/2022 00:45

I thought Debbie presented the issues very well but KW was obviously asking more challenging questions to Debbie whereas KW went all soft on DeLuca who got the easy touch.

It's a shame they couldn't have had a detransitioner on too to show the reason why the government needs to legislate cautiously around this issue.

Thanks all - I agree that Debbie got a much tougher line of questioning.

Sinead Watson would have been excellent as would Keira Bell.

Does anyone else miss Emily Maitliss? She was much more ready to ask tough questions on any topic.

I had the impression from past interviews that Emily was concerned about the children being treated at the Tavistock and she seemed to have a good grasp of the sex/gender issues.

Yes. I saw some information put out about some cases a few days back, obviously designed to cause outrage, but the one I read in full was from fifty or so years ago, and I thought while reading it, that if that was the best evidence they could come up with, it really wasn’t relevant to laws being made now. The agenda was obvious though. They were painting “conversion therapy” as something heinous involving ECT when we are concerned that what will end up being banned is watchful waiting, which was the gold standard treatment for gender identity disorder much more recently than the ancient and irrelevant case.
